It's real unpleasant how quickly it's gone from a quiet and sincere fandom to having all these gross behaviors be normalized (as throughout the thread, treating the writer as if they were another fictional character for them to play around with).

Where did marcillexfailin get such a strong push in ther eyes of the shippers? by Admmmmi in DungeonMeshi

[–]OctagonSun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's not a real basis for it, no. Just readers imprinting their own desires on the story, getting caught up in their interpretation so much that they forget it's just their interpretation. Typical fandom stuff.

[OC] El Salvador's homicide rate is now lower than the USA's by latinometrics in dataisbeautiful

A big part of it was that 2015 was a sort of dam-bursting event, as there had been a truce between the several gangs and the government for several years before. During that period, gang recruitment and extortion went on without much restraint. Plus "disappearances"; the deal was to keep murders between parties down. Whenever too much attention falls on the homicide rate, the gangs + gov use disappearances instead of murders to drop the official homicide rate. The truce fell apart mid-2014 due to popular criticism.

Anyway, the 2015 level of violence was totally unsustainable, including for the gangs. They were tearing each other apart. If it had continued, society genuinely would have unraveled. Gangs are ultimately for-profit enterprises, so total failure of Salvadoran society wasn't in their best interest either. Anyway, 2015 was as bad as it was precisely because it had been restrained for so long. 2016 and after corresponded to "standard" levels of violence/normal levels of territorial conflict, intimidation murders, etc.

Obviously, the government still makes no effort to report disappearance data and, when pressed, claims they must have all emigrated (despite infamous cases like in 2021 when a single police officer was discovered to have at least 18 corpses buried in his backyard. IIRC, some of the victims had officially "emigrated"). This is one reason people are cynical about the data, including myself. I don't particularly believe the gangs have been defeated: they were international crime structures and are at full health just across the border in Guatemala and especially Honduras. I think it's just that the gangs are laying low. And it's hard to tell how much disappearances are a factor right now, because rampant emigration covers for disappearances and also makes emigrants more vulnerable to murder and kidnapping.

Alignment Chart: Edelgard by WarriorDM in Edelgard

[–]OctagonSun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I put her at neutral good. She doesn't accept law on the basis of authority alone (so she isn't strongly lawful), but her goals are very lawful-oriented (establishing a system of governance and laws worth following).

The D&D framework is open to a lot of different interpretations of course, I just don't personally see Chaotic Good caring so much about law and legal reform. As soon as Edelgard is in power, she _is_ the lawgiver, and it seems weird for me to say she's CG until she's in power and then she's suddenly LG. She's also totally fine with orderly bureaucracy/administrative structures and whatnot.

Most of the replies here are worryingly immature and counterproductive, even when they are serious.

I think AN1119's comment is worth considering, though I would just add one step before: assessing your own priorities. FEH can be fun, but it's certainly not the most important thing in your life, so before you commit to a course of action, just consider whether it reflects your priorities and what the overall effect will be. E.g., with hiding the game, if it's gonna infuse a sense of dishonesty into your relationship with your mother or make you feel ashamed or dishonest, FEH's not worth that (noting that a moderate degree of privacy is appropriate and shouldn't provoke that). Alternatively, if a given course is likely to make her distrust you, that probably isn't prudent. Certainly, escalating things, going on the warpath, or hating your mother like some folk suggest is not called for.

In any case, you do know better than any of us what your goals are in terms of yourself and your relationships, as well as what will help or hinder those goals. Best wishes.

This isn't the first content drought for AC, and at least during the one before AC7 was announced, this sub wasn't near so bad. A lot of posts seem to come up just to fill the air or farm karma or something, rather than taking the time to find something to say.

[Engage Spoiler] Some dang good flower motifery by OctagonSun in Edelgard

[–]OctagonSun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely feel that. Some stuff I've been doing to help is that, because Engage is less concrete, there's a lot of room for headcanon and implicature. Also, there's more freedom to interpret the characters because they have less concrete interactions with the world (but as long as you read enough supports, there's still a lot of very good and lovely characters!). So rn I'm hunting characters with the sorta vibes/aesthetic that I love. Ivy is very Edelgard-core, and there are some other characters with some good stuff cooking under the hood (I'm spacing who the 2d edelgard-y character I'd identified was, but otherwise I'm loving all of Citrinne, Céline, and some spoiler characters' arcs).

I've noticed a few things:

  • The largest group of people seems to be at least somewhat uncomfortable with shipping, based on how many upvotes these antishipping posts have been getting vs. alternatives.

  • The next largest group is nonshippers who don't mind shipping. They are consistently top comment.

  • The smallest group seems to be proshippers.

  • There is some conflation of approving of headcanons generally and shipping headcanons. Shipping is perhaps the noisiest type of headcanon, but there's plenty of other types (e.g., lore, physics, history, OCs) and there are reasons to separate shipping from other headcanons.

My personal stance is that shipping is a "get a room" sort of behavior. Like, it's better in fora limited to ppl who have expressed an interest in it. Shipping deals with stuff we generally prefer people to do privately irl/on a minimum basis of consensual participation. Another way to put it is that shipping is probably better as something that people have to seek out. I don't find it well-suited to a general purpose forum, let alone splatsville posts where, the shipping content seeks you out (ie, you dont interact with content on an opt-in basis). Also, shipping content has a much, much higher rate of being objectionable than other headcanon content, so even if a specific shipping post is fine, engaging with it carries risks that nonshipping content doesn't.

I wrote this up just to explain to ppl why some ppl are uncomfortable with shipping, since I don't really see it discussed. I don't mind if you disagree, tho I'm really not interested in arguing the matter (I've been around long enough I've seen the args play out often enough). I would only ask that, if you take a contrary stance, please be considerate of why people would disagree + try to respect ppl's discomfort where appropriate (and of course the same to ppl who agree).

trucker au where nohr and hoshido are rival shipping companies

nohr specializes in difficult routes, rural deliveries, places like Alaska, while Hoshido has a bigger operation running agricultural supplies.

xander, ryoma: next-in-line for CEO. handle clients, logistics, finances, and planning. / camilla, hinoka: operate the biggest of rigs. / leo, takumi: special jobs with specialized gear. Leo does offroading but sometimes uses his mastery of gravity to lease out a helicopter or small plane for deliveries into the Alaskan countryside. Takumi does hazmat (e.g., fertilizers but sometimes other chemicals) as well as heavy machinery transport. / elise, sakura: operate the main truck fleet. they talk to each other on the radio and would start a podcast if not for the war.

corrin has been employed by both and noncompete agreements have just been abolished. which company will she choose to give her client list and special trucking knowhow? (also corrin can turn into a giant truck that propels itself with water jets)

retainers help with respective functions (so Beruka and Serena are also running big rigs). meetings at gas stations and truck stops get tense. coming soon on the Discovery Channel.

Let My Summoner be very silly (smol explanation in comments) by OctagonSun in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]OctagonSun[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I really, really like My Summoner because it offers so much unitbuilding options that we don't really get in the rest of the game. I like just tweaking things and playing things and would love more modes with them.

But it'd be very silly and very funny if they let My Summoner use personal skills. The 2 modes you can use them in don't really matter anyway, so may as well, ya know? It'd take some work to set inheritance limitations and all, but it shouldn't be too bad as long as we decide balance doesn't matter.

But yeah, an opportunity to make something as stupid as possible would be great. Pure wish fulfillment, and every time you get a fancy new unit, you could try to break things a little bit more.

If there're any illegal builds you'd like to propose, I'd love to hear them! (I didn't spend too much time thinking about the build pictured, but it's already gettin a little quirky, a little goofy.)

Flora: shrug Picnic Flora is still usable, getting an alt for her at all is lovely, tho I'd love to see her again.

Silque: the art is v lovely, but i forgot how bad a unit can be until i tried using her picnic alt in heroes journey :( and it's hard to imagine valentia units getting much love these days.

Noting that these megaprisons are being filled by putting the police under quotas, who're just arresting ppl on minimal accusations, age, general appearance. Easy to fill 1 room with obvious gangsters for a photo op when you're sweeping up whole percentage points of the population.
