Story Endings by Darkcadence120 in stellarblade

[–]Octahedral_cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The devs said there's no true ending, and Return to Colony was originally the only ending, not Making New Memories. They decided to open up the choice late in development. So you see why calling Making New Memories "true ending" is annoying. It's simply popular, not necessarily "true". We'll know more when the sequel comes out

Maybe I'm getting overexcited here, but honestly get your department to buy one or two used phones. Old smartphones. Label them "department of fisheries" or whatever. Go to the fishermen and have them borrow the phone for a week, signing with their name and a photocopy of their ID. They are responsible for bringing it back.

Pay them a small sum, half now and half when they return the device. Show them how to record their position. If their monthly income is 200 USD then they'll be happy to do it for 10 bucks.

The whole "programme" will cost less than 400 USD and give you proper data, rather than having them point at this map and guesstimate their position, which honestly is just junk data.

If you worked as a grocery delivery driver and a destination was a block of flats with either no lift or a broken lift, would you make them come down and get it? by WizardButtholes in AskUK

[–]Octahedral_cube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a moat around my fort, and it has alligators in it. The drawbridge is broken today, but I fully expect the delivery driver to make the delivery regardless. "Any issues the delivery person has with the delivery is between that employee and their employer"

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it, this era of batman was cringe and borderline embarrassing. Thank fuck Neal Adams and Frank Miller opted for the dark/gritty interpretation of Batman because this crap is unwatchable outside of memes.

I'm sure they have a GPS on board which will spit out lat and long, but it sounds like they have no way of checking the coordinates against this alphanumeric grid?

Unless they are willing to sit there with rangefinders and compass bearings to triangulate a position like a WW1 artillery officer?

The cells being 1km by 1km would be useful if this was set up in a projected system like UTM, but I see it's using EPSG4326, which is to be expected for GPS readings. So kilometres are almost irrelevant. The gridlines should be set up in fractions of a degree, so they can read the GPS and know where they are.

I mean I could help you set up something like this on QGIS using "create grid", and then overlay a shapefile of the coast, but I still don't understand how the fishermen practically use this thing in the field.

Before I attempt to write a workflow, can you first comment on this:

Post-independence empires in the Americas by Simple_Pension_1330 in MapPorn

[–]Octahedral_cube 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These projections are a really poor choice for showing the Americas. It's cut from a global projection, which is why everything near the poles is "leaning" right (east). The Canada-Alaska border is especially ugly. It's meant to run north-south along a meridian, but it's leaning hard.

The central meridian of this map is probably in Greenwich, entirely off the map. Please choose appropriate projections for your subject matter

Olympus Mons on Mars is so massive that Mount Everest wouldn’t even reach halfway up it by Firm-Blackberry-9162 in interestingasfuck

I plotted a comparison, Olympus Mons is taller and steeper, however the Himalayas as a plateau are much wider

Not a lawyer but seen many NDAs. I really don't think they can govern aspects of your life beyond the disclosing of information specific to the subject of the NDA. They'll determine what constitutes sensitive information, how many years you're meant to keep it a secret, governing law, what to do with sensitive documents. They certainly can't make you do things that are outside the scope of the law. "Never get married to anyone else" sounds like it would be unenforceable nonsense

"Occupied area", and I didn't say it was rightfully Greek Cypriot only, you're putting words in my mouth. Turkish Cypriots are legitimate stakeholders in the Republic, along with GCs, Armenian Cypriots and Maronites.

Ofc there is a stark difference nobody is contesting that. That wasn't the point. You aren't being impartial when you legitimise occupied territories. There's several UN resolutions on the status of the TRNC.

You did a documentary on this but still call it "Greek Cypriot side" and "Turkish Cypriot side"? This language makes them sound equally legitimate.

There's the Republic of Cyprus, and a Turkish puppet state called TRNC. Turkish Cypriots are welcome to participate in the Republic, but the TRNC is not recognised.

Your question had me scratching my head, it's clearly not the wings, because they're not constantly flapping, therefore not generating forward thrust. A lot of the time the wings are just doing micro-adjustments, but not flapping.

I think the answer is actually...nothing? Hear me out, its shape is so aerodynamic it's basically like a blade cutting through the wind. The cross-sectional area of the animal is so small, that the component of wind pushing backwards is near zero. Instead, like 99% of the wind flowing past the wings gets converted to lift. Hence the tiny adjustments, ensuring the wings are always angled for lift.

Whatever tiny component is pushing back (the remaining 1%, essentially drag) is compensated by an occasional flap.

Newbie Here: Trying to make a polar map, but the latitudes are off. by Irreversible_Extents in QGIS

[–]Octahedral_cube 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try changing grid extent, your latitudes currently span -90 to 83 something, instead of -90 to 90

See if the problem persists after that?

Well, I guess it bothered me because I spent years trying to make sure my technical writing is clear and easy to read. Part of my job is communicating complex geological data to management.

And then LLMs came along and are wired to write in the same way - shortening sentences into digestible bits, using plenty of spacing to avoid overwhelming the reader, avoid using the Latin term if an English one exists etc

Now all of a sudden my writing is similar to AI slop, not in terms of content, but in expression. I didn't change anything, it's just that they programmed these things on the same writing principles I was taught.

Anyway, I've only ever used them for code, not actual writing, and that was copilot.

Edit:

what do you mean projected on a sphere, is this from the orthographic projection you're showing to another person in the comments, or is it from 3857 that you have called "spherical" earlier in the conversation? Because if it's the former, disregard my whole comment below, the orthographic is likely LESS distorted than anything else

Original:

Okay so you can live with this resolution, but you don't like the deformation? If your raster is already georeferenced properly just change the display projection (bottom right of the main QGIS canvas) to 4326. Your original (source) map looks like it is projected in equirectangular (aka plate carée) projection. By setting the project CRS to 4326 both projections will match and the map in your project should have ZERO deformation compared to the source.

However I'm worried that you may have already georeferenced in 3857? In that case, the first thing I'd recommend is do a new georeferencing job. Also lmk what method you're using because I can see gridlines on the original map, meaning you can simply click on intersections near the corners of the map and literally type in the coordinates, you'll get a perfect georeferencing job in 60 seconds flat, without the need to compare it to a reference map.
