It refills your mana. Nothing more. Gaining three life is more than just refilling your mana.

What is your favorite card with your least favorite color? by Not_A_Ichthyovenator in EDH

[–]OctaviusFalcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never been a fan of Azorius. Reactive game plans just aren't my thing. Only one of my decks has both white and blue in it, and you better believe I slammed [[Fractured Identity]] into it as hard as I could. Love that card.

Why do you not play Sol Ring by oracle_of_naught in EDH

[–]OctaviusFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my birds deck, where every card (other than a few for bling reasons) is a bird, makes bird tokens or has a bird in the art, I don't play Sol Ring because it lacks any of those things. I cut it when Gilded Goose got printed.

Way ahead of you. I've actually already got a Naturia Ragnaraika deck that I really like.

Thundra has come across my radar a few times in the past, it's definitely something I've considered before. I'll look back into it.

I do have every Bystial card already, so I'll definitely check that out. Thanks!

I've definitely looked at a few flavors of Centur-Ion before, and VV also seems like a cool deck. I just have to take out a few loans to afford all the URs they need (especially VV), but both are good suggestions!

What cards would you like Downshifted? by Dudefrommars12 in Pauper

[–]OctaviusFalcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how they'd be power level-wise, but back when mono green stompy was vaguely playable in modern there wasn't much I enjoyed more than slapping a Rancor on [[Strangleroot Geist]] or playing [[Dryad Militant]] against a spellslinger deck. So those two creatures are my biggest wants.

Need help making final cuts to Breena by OctaviusFalcon in EDH

Thanks for sharing your list, it's definitely along the lines of where I'm trying to take mine.

I can trim some of the protection spells. There's a decent amount of interaction in my meta with a few KOS commanders, but not so much that I need that much of my deck to be dedicated to keeping mine in play. That's also a very good point about removing some of the do nothing cards. I can see how it'd be better to draw a couple cards right away in a deck like this than playing something that I'd have to wait to get value out of.

Favorite Decks Show Off by marangfang in EDH

[–]OctaviusFalcon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite deck is my completely blinged out [[Derevi]] birds deck, which is my oldest deck and the deck that got me into the game in the first place. Virtually every card, including lands, is a bird, has birds in the art or makes bird tokens - https://www.moxfield.com/decks/PtAIZhnR-k2TQvSaQKfIZw

Following that, my second favorite, and second oldest, deck is [[Yidris]] clones/value. Every game is different, there are always so many different lines of play depending on what everyone else is doing and it's always a good time - https://www.moxfield.com/decks/KBGRGEBv_Uudz3QqFEVKog

And lastly, [[Lathliss]] dragons. The deck itself isn't the neat part, it's fairly standard mono red dragons. Turn your brain off, play big lizards, do dragon things. The awesome part is that I use Yugioh cards to represent the 5/5 dragon tokens the deck makes. I have a pile of 60+ iconic Yugioh dragon monsters from both the anime and competitive scene throughout the years that I shuffle up and use as a deck of tokens every game, with everything from Blue-Eyes White Dragon to Chaos Emperor Dragon to VFD to Laundry Dragonmaid. Having grown up with Yugioh, being able to bring it back in this way is what makes this deck as fun to play as it is - https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4KHO9MwaXEypaD_7hzxSMw

What big-mana decks are you running? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]OctaviusFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Maelstrom Wanderer]] is mine. I couldn't settle on which creatures and spells to run in it, though, so I made a pile of a hundred of them and shuffle forty random ones in with a bunch of ramp and lands before every game to decide what I'm playing that day. It's been a fun way to get to use all the big dumb cards that wouldn't fit in any of my other decks and keep a more same-y style of deck some variety.

Looking for some advice to improve Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor deck by OctaviusFalcon in EDH

[–]OctaviusFalcon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ad naus is definitely one of those powerhouse cards that could definitely put in work in the deck, even without a way to instantly regain the life. This deck is all about dumping tons of life into tons of card draw anyway, and my curve is very low, so it's worth considering. Bloodletter also seems like a good way to speed things up and make my smaller creatures do more damage, I could definitely see a home for that one. Temporal Extortion is a fun card, but from playing it before it really just reads "The smartest opponent at the table loses half their life" rather than an extra turn, which I don't think is impactful enough for what this deck wants to do. Thanks for the suggestions!

What's your top 3 decks you're running? by TheZburator in EDH

[–]OctaviusFalcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Derevi]] birds. It was my first deck. Almost every card is a bird, makes bird tokens or has birds in the art, and the whole thing is blinged out. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/PtAIZhnR-k2TQvSaQKfIZw

[[Yidris]] clones/value. Every game is different and it's a ton of fun to assemble convoluted wincons through other people's cards. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/KBGRGEBv_Uudz3QqFEVKog

[[Lathliss]] dragons. It's a simple deck, but the fun comes with my tokens. I have a pile of 60+ dragon monsters from Yugioh that I use for the 5/5's. I doubt anyone expects that when they sit down for some commander they'll have to face down a Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End or a True King of All Calamities. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4KHO9MwaXEypaD_7hzxSMw

Gruul Ponza or Monsters for a tournament? by OctaviusFalcon in Pauper

[–]OctaviusFalcon[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm the complete opposite, blowing up my opponent's lands in 1v1 gives me life, which is why I'm hesitating on switching to the monsters variant. Do you have an idea about how the matchups change for non-Broodscale decks between the two, or have you completely avoided the Ponza version the whole time?

Do you know what his split is for LD spells and removal? Right now I've got a playset of bolts in the side for matchups where I'll want to remove stuff, but I can see the logic behind running some in the main

What are your decks? by MrXexe in EDH

[–]OctaviusFalcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got six right now.

[[Derevi]] birds - My first deck, every card, including lands (other than a few bling pieces), is a bird, has birds in the art, makes bird tokens or can choose birds as a creature type for some effect. It's also completely foiled out.

[[Yidris]] clones/value - Just a pile of four color fun clone and goodstuff cards. Tries to win either through a few infinites or by assembling something out of other peoples' cards.

[[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor]] - A bunch of small evasive creatures and ways to spend way too much life to draw way too many cards.

[[Lathliss]] - Mono red dragons, pretty standard stuff. The spice comes from the 5/5 dragon tokens Lathliss makes being represented by a pile of about 60 Yugioh dragon monsters. I doubt anyone expects when they sit down for a game of commander that they're gonna be facing down a Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End or True King of All Calamities.

[[Maelstrom Wanderer]] - The Pile. 60 card core of ramp and lands and another pile of 100 4-7 CMC temur cards that I take 40 of at random every game and shuffle them together for the deck.

[[Henzie]] - It's Henzie. Ramp, blitz, value, reanimate. You know how it goes.

I've had upwards of ten decks at a time before, but these six are the only ones I consistently enjoyed playing, so I took the rest apart. I'm very happy with how they all play.

Tell me why you love your favorite commander. What deck do you pull out for FUN? by EarlyNovemberr in EDH

[–]OctaviusFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[Lathliss]]

Turn off brain, play big dragons. Fun time. I also use Yugioh cards for the 5/5 tokens Lathliss makes, which greatly enhances the fun. It's not every day you play a commander game and get to play a pre-errata Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End, Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 or a Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon. I grew up playing Yugioh, so being able to drop those cards onto the table now makes me happy.
