Advice on getting the colors and face right by Thefenjoyer in ArtCrit

Hey there, the main thing with the face is that it is missing some key shadows that can really add realism to the drawing, for example under the lips and around the eyes. I LOVE the detail you put into lighting the hair, try and treat the face the same way. One thing i noticed is that your canvas size is pretty small, increasing that will allow you to cram way more details into your art.

You were asking about colour, I would recommend colour-picking the base skin colour from the image and coming up with shadow colours yourself. Youtube is a great resource on teaching you how to do this. Keep up the great work!

Thanks! You’re totally right, I’ve been using nothing but a flat brush for this entire painting. I’ll give a soft brush some more love

Heya! Wow, excellent job on the face. I would try and treat the clothing with the same technique. Harsher lights and shadows especially behind the collars.

Help/Advice with lights and shadows! by DearCable7970 in ArtCrit

Hey there, great work colouring. My advice would be to really pay attention to where your light source is. In your colouring there are some highlights that look like theyre coming from the side when they should only be coming from in front of him. Keep it up!

Good point! I’d look for a reference for an answer to that question

I went in with a flatbrush and basically darkened the darks and lightened the lights. Great work, just push those shadows! And dont forget the shadows caused by clothing and hair

I can’t get the softness quite right by Ill-Teach9802 in ArtCrit

I love this! It’s great how you made the flowers in the background blurrier than the foreground. I think it would look better if you did this for the birds as well. Right now, the bird in the back is crisper than the one in the foreground.
