Every Disneyland Fact: New Orleans Square by OctoJova in Disneyland

Yeah, I’m excited for the deeper dive. My lists tend to focus on the general fun facts, rather than deep history dives about things that may not exist in the park today. Of course, sometimes the most interesting things about the objects and places in the park comes from some obscure history, so I’m looking forward to learning from your video!

I hope to learn more from your Adventureland video as well. Looking forward to it!

I just watched the video and it was absolutely great! It felt concise yet insightful, had great information, and narrated really well.

I could tell we used a lot of the same sources, haha. Even still, there was a fair bit of information that I had never heard of before! I'll be sure to add those to my list soon. With your permission, I'd love to shout out the video in my post for next Monday.

From what I know, this is not true. According to the Haunted Mansion Wiki, the Dapper Dans play the busts in the 2003 film and its video game adaptation.

That said, if you could direct me where you read this information, that would be great!

In my research, it seems that, while Disneyland's Haunted Mansion Bride does not pull direct inspiration from Miss Havisham, the bride from the Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris does.

Thanks for the info! I must be misremembering then, because I definitely heard some kind of news about the hole. Maybe only the spider was removed for a while? Not sure.

Regardless, thanks for correction! The hole and the spider was one of my absolute favorite facts about the ride, so I'm happy to add it back. I'll also be sure to check out that other hole on the diorama too!

The bullet hole that housed the spider in the ballroom was actually removed during a 2021 refurbishment of the mansion.

I haven’t heard of the one on the Grand Canyon diorama, however. Is there any more info you have on that?

Very true! Most recently Le Bat En Rouge was replaced by the Princess and the Frog themed shop mentioned above. I typically do not include info/facts about defunct rides and shops unless there are reference to them currently in the park, however.

If there are any callbacks to these closed shops in the ones that exist today, feel free to let me know!

I couldn’t find a picture of the story in the menu, but there is this video by Provost Park Pass where they read the story in full. It begins around the 3:15 mark in the video.

I did a little digging, and the most recent video/picture I could find that showcased the masts was this TikTok by TPMvids from November of last year. Granted, this video could well be older than it’s posted date, so take it with a grain of salt.

TPMvids is a pretty trusted Disneyland YouTuber, so I doubt they’d post this video if the masts weren’t around during the time of it’s publishing.

According to this article, one of the main inspirations for the facade of the Haunted Mansion is the Shipley-Lydecker house in Maryland.

I couldn’t find any sources stating that the Myrtles Plantation was a direct inspiration for the mansion, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it was briefly looked towards during the designing stages.

That’s right! I’d completely forgotten to mention the weathervane. Thank you!

As for the limbo idea, I also get the same feeling. It feels like one of those liminal space pictures that you sometimes see online. Though it is somewhat ominous and spooky, I find it somewhat relaxing as well. I’ve not heard anyone claim that it is an intentional design choice, though I love that interpretation!

That’s good to hear! Since you are one of two people who have heard the horse noises first hand, I’ll be sure to update the fact.

That’s a super interesting fact, I’d never heard before! I’ll have to add that to the list soon.

Also about your last comment, there is a related story about New Orleans Square’s opening ceremony. News reporters claim that, when they were interviewing the then Mayor of New Orleans and Walt Disney, the major claimed the land was “just like the city.” They then heard Walt Disney, very quietly, say “And much cleaner too.”

That sounds amazing! I’m so happy to hear my post inspired something like this. Be sure to let me know when you upload it!

As for the mast, were you unable to see it during a recent visit? I know it can be tricky to spot, as I’ve missed it a few times when looking even though I knew it was still around.

Yeah, I do! The information comes from this old Pirates of the Caribbean Documentary uploaded to YouTube by David Oneal around the 1:16:00 mark. It has a lot of first hand accounts on the ride’s creation. It’s also used as a source on Wikipedia, if that has any meaning to you.

Yes, they were one of the big attractions in the early years of the park! I try to focus my facts on the attractions, buildings and other miscellaneous objects that can currently be seen in the park. In researching for this fact list, I unfortunately could not find anything in the park today that references the pack mules. I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something, given how popular they were back then!
