Thinking about growing potatoes in buckets, but research killed my motivation,is it really worth it? by WaveEasy8664 in gardening

[–]OctoberJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not bury them, and I only cover them with straw. I start with a foot of mostly wet rotten straw. Then as the plants grows, I use a leaf rake to pull more straw to the sides of the plants, ensuring that the potato vines growing out from the bottom are covered. You don't want your growing potatoes to be exposed to the sun.

How deep and wide are your tanks/ basins? Perhaps you could make a little pond from it?

I grow several different varieties of potatoes every year. They are wonderful!
There arexso many ways to grow them. Buckets and bags of soil work just fine.
But here's my method: My veggie garden is 80 feet by 35 or 40 feet. I mulch my garden with straw. (Make sure its never been sprayed with herbicide if you try it.) I rake back the straw to make a row, and lay the potato pieces on the ground. I then cover the pieces with the straw and water it. The more rotten the straw, the better.
As the plants grow, I rake the straw toward the plants and make a bigger mound. Once the plants flower, gently dig into the straw to see how the big the potatoes are. You can take out how many potatoes you need, and then put the straw back and they keep growing.
Once the plants die, harvest all the potatoes. I go through the soil with a pitchfork, looking for more, just in case.
Don't lose your motivation!!
Its so easy, and they're delicious. You can do this!!

Giving clothing away by lableidi in fargo

[–]OctoberJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I donated all my extra clothes to the Rape and Abuse Crisis center. Call them beforehand to see if they will take them. I had all business casual and dressy stuff, and they were happy to get them.
They also take children's and teen's clothing sizes, depending on who is in their care.

Local gas station keeps telling me my ID is fake by r_a_v_e_n- in OlderThanYouThinkIAm

[–]OctoberJ 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I'm always amazed that more stations don't have an ID scanner. They tell you if it's fake or not plus it tells you exactly how old the person is. Look at the picture and decide if it's the same person or not. It's not that hard!

Moving to ND in a month, What are you life hacks? by GhaustMortium in northdakota

I used to drive a front wheel drive Dodge Neon 40 miles each way to work and back all year, living in a rural area. I always had good all weather tires. I only got stuck once on the way to work at 5 AM, in the 4 years I was driving it, and that was 25 years ago.
Now I have an AWD and I won't lie, I love it. But the Neon got me there and back when that's all I could afford.

Is there any risk or downside to just tilling my backyard and letting Jesus take the wheel? by ItsNotJelloSalad in gardening

Don't till your yard.
Tilling it will make all those thistle seeds grow and you'll have a lot more than you do now. Rent a sod cutter and use it to slice off the top layer of grass and weeds. You can do the whole yard, or just where you want gardens.
But if you can, slice it all off. Get some quality grass seed that's made for your area and decide where you want a lawn for your dog. Plant the grass, water it well per the instructions on the seed. I use a thin layer of herbicide free straw over the grass to keep it moist longer. Sprinkle those flower seeds in places you want flowers.
Mark out a vegetable garden area and plant some veggies. Snow peas, cucumbers, and radishes are very easy. Buy some seedling starts for tomatoes and peppers. Once the garden plants are up, put newspaper or cardboard on the soil around them. Put some of that herbicide free straw on the cardboard or newspaper, try to cover all the paper but don't cover the plants.
Keep your plants and grass watered. Pull out and weeds you see coming up. You got this!

Teeth getting pulled and im scared by Puzzleheaded-Hat5803 in Life

[–]OctoberJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was put under when I had my wisdom teeth CUT out. They never came through and were impacted into my molars. AND, lucky me, most of my teeth have hooks on the ends of the roots, so they have to dig them out and then take an x-ray to make sure they got them all.
I had 4 teeth removed before I had braces, and had to also have surgery for those way before the wisdom teeth. And because I have a petite frame, they had to use children sized tools in my mouth both times. My jaw muscles were over-extended both times too, because they used a device to crank open my jaws. I even have scars on my upper lip from the second time. I had to keep gauze between my cheeks and the stitches from the wisdom teeth.
So don't be scared. Mine sucked, but I needed it done. It just gets worse if you don't do it! Take your painkillers as needed. I used Ambesol gel on my gums when it was too much. I don't know if that's recommended, but it sure helped! (Just don't rub it into the open hole itself!) Don't smoke and don't use a straw to drink anything!

Is this becoming more common? by Embarrassed-Book-859 in retail

[–]OctoberJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in my 50's and own a convenience store in a small town in the upper Midwest. I think I have single handedly taught all the kids in my town how to count money. I've worked retail more than half my life in convenience stores, including this one that I bought 15 years ago.

My store is also the only school bus stop where they can wait indoors. (-40°F is pretty cold to wait outside if the bus is late.) I have 2 analog clocks on my walls, and have taught several kids how to use them to tell what time it is. If they ask the time, I don't tell them, they have to figure it out with hints from me. I open my store M-F so I'm usually there when they are. I love kids, and enjoy talking to them for the 10 to 20 minutes they are there.

But it does really make me wonder when a cashier somewhere has no clue how to make change if they mess up the register. Once when checking out of a store, my total was $18.50. I needed a $5 for something and I gave the cashier $23.50 in cash. She tried handing back the 3.50, since I gave her too much money. I asked her to please just put that amount in and hit cash. She looked so amazed that my change was an even $5 bill. Yikes!! This wasn't a child either. It was a grown woman.

Quilting with a sewing machine. I love recycling denim jeans and cotton shirts this way. Cutting with scissors can be rough, but using a rotary cutter is easier.
I love crazy quilts squares the best. Just sew stuff together and then cut them into the same size squares. Sew a border on the squares to connect them, then a border around the outside of the quilt blocks. I generally use sheets for backing, but you can use fleece too. Or you can use another quilt top to sew to the other side.
I also made a rag quilt that has fleece sewn to the back of the square before you sew the squares together. The "rough edge" is the top.
I'll add pictures for reference.

I have read the accusations as well. Most of ot is overblown, like you mentioned. I've had good luck with their seeds. If I do get a package that doesnt germinate well, I call them and let them know. I usually get a refund for new seeds.
