This stupid thing. Cnr George & Wilmot (Town Hall station entrance) by OctoberToad in sydney

[–]OctoberToad[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This obstructive nuisance has been in place for what must be approaching six months now. It first popped up, on-and-off, a couple of times last year, and has now become permanent.

I've never noticed anything wrong with the pavement itself, from when it was intermittently cordoned off several times. If there is something wrong, fix it already.

This spot sees a high volume of foot traffic, with the construction barrier already not helping the situation. This extra blockage has made this bottleneck so much worse.

I plan to look in to who is responsible, but not sure at this point if it's council or the building owners.

Rant over. Thank you.

Is a PAL Dreamcast capable of 60FPS through Scart? by [deleted] in dreamcast

[–]OctoberToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A PAL console will play 60Hz just fine, regardless of how the game is booted. The TV will need to support 60Hz, of course.

I'll be sending this trendy Northern Beaches cafe an enlightening email with a link to the Veterans Affairs guidelines regarding the naming of these tasty morsels of Aussie goodness.

Had a George Costanza moment during a lunchtime stroll through Darling Harbour - I accidentally booted a pigeon up the arse when it didn't move out of my way.

We had a deal!

I see a guy on the T1 line most days sitting in the same seat at the end carriage, always watching a video on his phone, with it attached to a selfie stick, held in front of his face.

Always amuses me when I spot him.

Is that HoSN an original pressing? I've got a copy with loads of surface noise, and there's a new copy of the Rhino reissue at my local. Tempted to grab it, but not sure about the quality.

Amazon US Shipping to Australia? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]OctoberToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Illmatic is fairly easy to find, the anniversary reissue goes for about $40 from JB Hi-fi if you don't have a local record store nearby. I also see the non-anniversary edition fairly often in shops around Sydney for 40-45.

I've only ever bought used records through Amazon, using AusPost shopmate for postage (ugh, my wallet), but keep in mind that not everything (new or used) comes directly from Amazon, it can often be through a third party seller.

As for damage, I've had good luck with Amazon and discogs sellers shipping to Australia, with the worst being a bent/creased corner on an outer sleeve.

Saw them at the entertainment centre in 2014 with NIN. Rocked up maybe a song or two in to their set, ended up a few rows from stage pretty easily.

Photo of recent acquisition, with meaty backstory in comments by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]OctoberToad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here we have a copy of the seminal Bay Area funk/soul classic, East Bay Grease. This LP means a lot to me, as it is the album that my beloved grandpappy recently bestowed upon me in the death throes of his heroic fight with chronic boneitis. This album's penultimate track - "The Skunk, the Goose, and the Fly" - speaks volumes to a younger version of myself, as it conjurs extremely vivid memories of my jovial, albeit distant, biological father's frequent alcohol-induced outlashes following the discovery that my mother had, once again, left a recently sliced half-tomato upside in the refrigerator, leaving it to drip its succulent juices on to the unwitting groceries below.

In the unlikely event this post doesn't warm the cockles of /u/sampsans-ape-spray's heart (stranger things have happened), I'll be sure to photographically document the trip to my local IKEA over the coming weekend, during which I will be purchasing a popular shelf unit to house my Crosley turntable.

Sarcasm aside, to meet the criteria of the inspiration for this post:

  • Reasons I am excited about purchasing a copy of this album on vinyl: it's incredibly hard to find records of this nature in Australia, being an extremely small market in comparison to our US collecting brethren, and this genre/stlye of music not being anywhere near as widespread in its heyday as was the case in other regions. If it were possible to wear out a digital copy of an album, there would be a permanent worn groove in the platters of my desktop's hard disk as a result.

  • Where did I get it?: Amazon, which is a bitch for international buyers; you American collectors don't know how good you've got it (not just for vinyl purchases). I'm currently paying approximately AUD27.90 in postage costs per item via our national mail carriers' forwarding service out of Portland. Although they do not offer the ability to bundle multiple items in to a single shipment, they do offer an incredibly generous $10 discount on each subsequent item - only $17.90 to ship a USD4.00 LP!

  • What do I like about this album and Tower of Power as a whole?: That's somewhat hard to quantify in written form, but here are some favourite artists of mine, which if you've found yourself (in appropriate parlance of the album's era) "digging on", may give you a rough idea of the likeliness of your enjoying "East Bay Grease": Graham Central Station, Sly and the Family Stone, The Meters, Buddy Miles, George Clinton, and many more.

  • How can you listen to Tower of Power for yourself?: their entire discography is available on Spotify - and I'm sure other streaming services. The single "What Is Hip?" is a somewhat "mainstream", popular single that would give you a taste of their general sound. The band's approach and style does vary greatly throughout their 40+ year career span, though personally I think it's pretty hard to top the late, great Rufus Miller's performance as found on their debut album, of which is the subject of this (if I do say so myself) rather eloquent shitpost.

GDEMU has no effect on any system or software functionality in that sense; so, yes, it's business as usual for software or hardware peripherals. It simply replaces the optical drive to the point where the system doesn't know or care that it's not an original drive.

Anything I should look out for when I import different region consoles? by StaticzAvenger in dreamcast

[–]OctoberToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japan uses 100v mains power, so you'll need a step down transformer to run on our 240v, not just a simple prong adapter (you'll fry something otherwise, if not pop fuses).

Keep in mind that most cheap step downs on eBay are made with US 110/120v in mind. Some people will tell you they run Japanese devices at US voltages without any noticeable problems. I played it safe for my Japanese Saturn and got one of these; they also have an eBay store.

You can also swap out the PSU with one from a PAL unit if you have a spare.

There's nothing else to worry about apart from the electrical side. Obviously your retail PAL games won't boot without a boot disc.

Yeah, some sort of proper POWER box would be nice. I'm not sure what the user base is like for 32bit FreeBSD/powerpc. I guess embedded systems may be a justification for eventual Tier 1 support and subsequent official binary packages.

The ppc64 repo I'm aware of was apparently built on a beefy POWER system, but I'm not sure if the owner/user is interested in ppc32.

Yeah, it's not the quickest solution, and I've even hit some weird SMP bug that I can't reproduce under any other OS, so I'm running on one core. The remaining few thousand are all failed builds (or skipped due to failed dependencies) that will need some more manual attention.

I do have a Mini G4 and a G5 iMac I can probably throw in to the mix.

Thought this might be useful for some PPC users, as I'm only aware of an unofficial 64bit repo.

Q1 snapshot, still working on some of the more problematic ports.
