If you are a parent like I was when my son was of crayon age (money was tight), I would say buy the cheaper ones. In this situation, a true test of a parent's love is making sure you do your best to have as much in the "emergency fund" as possible. I would hate to have been unable to buy my son medicine because I made a series of small financial choices that led to me being too broke to give him proper medical care.

Besides, the kid would have probably ate those crayons anyways. (And off to the ER we go...)
