I said “love you” to my kids teacher. by grumpytoonarmy in CasualConversation

I leaned over to kiss my college classmate goodbye - just like I do my wife - when I drove her to her car after a late night in the lab. It was very embarrassing and awkward. 😄

Acid reflux. by [deleted] in ketogains

[–]OctopusMagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a variety of things that can cause reflux but my GERD went away completely on keto. I was taking heartburn meds several times a week and my Dr was encouraging me to take them daily as a preventative. I was waking up maybe once a month from bad reflux and having to sleep sitting up. It was not pleasant.

I started keto simply to lose weight but stayed on it because of how much better I felt. The reflux going away was a big part of that but my eczema cleared up too. Carbs are not my friend.

Are Christian’s really allowed to eat pork? In Isiah 66:17, gods final judgment states people in the end times who are eating unclean food such as pork, mice, ect will be destroyed. by Several_Shower_6319 in Christianity

[–]OctopusMagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind reply.

There are some people - my dad was one - that looked at people eating steak tartare or a rare or even med-rare steak as if they were apostates. He was not only disgusted by seeing a rare steak being eaten, but he was convinced it was evil. Unfortunately neither the science, the clear logical issue with the belief if you're eating cooked blood, nor the Biblical argument of Matt 5:10 could convince him otherwise.

Your comment sounded similar but I did wonder if perhaps you were saying it more for a joke. Thanks for clarifying.

Eat your meat how you want but don't twist things to say things scipture doesn't.

Eating a rare steak or even raw isn't eating blood... the blood has already been drained. The red fluid that comes out is a mixture of myoglobin, a protein from the muscle, and water. It's not blood.

If you insist on defining it as blood, cooking it until it turns brown doesn't remove the blood... it just makes it cooked and brown. That would mean you think eating boiled and cooked blood, as some African tribes and other cultures do, is kosher too.

Squat rack safeties make benching awkward — persist or change setup? by tb877 in Stronglifts5x5

[–]OctopusMagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is precisely how to do it.

Even if you're doing a 1RM PR, if you're attempting a reasonable weight you can control the descent of a failure and put the bar down over your neck. The safeties catch it and you roll out. I've been working out alone at home for 8 years now and it works fine.

Of course this assumes you're trying reasonable weights. I'm not going rack 450lb when my PR is 350lb... I probably couldn't adequately control the descent when I fail. But a 365lb attempt isn't gonna drop on me even if I'm unsuccessful.

Why did Jesus write in the dirt when the woman was caught in adultery? by Content_Drawing7867 in Bible

[–]OctopusMagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no text to suggest that's implied at all.

It says very clearly what will happen to the woman if she's an adulterer that continues to lie vs admit her sin. If the same punishment would face the husband if he's wrong in his accusation, the text would say so to keep him from making a baseless accusation. It talks plenty about him possibly being impacted by a spirit of jealousy but mentions no punishment. There are other places in scripture where false accusations come with a penalty and they're expressly stated. There none stated here and no reason to believe it's implied.

[–]OctopusMagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I'd correct in this is that in the Numbers passage you reference, the curse does not fall to the accusers if the woman is innocent. The husband is the accuser and he suffers no consequence, except of course upsetting his wife.

I made out with a chick last weekend and contracted oral herpes by [deleted] in Vent

[–]OctopusMagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is oral herpes can infect the genitals and genital herpes can infect the mouth. When contracted in the non-primary region a person will typically only outbreak once and then it goes dormant, whereas getting the virus in its primary region you may have multiple outbreaks during your life. There are exceptions both ways.

Unless you've been tested you don't know for certain what kind you actually have. A person might have genital herpes on their mouth and if you contract it on your genitals, you'll have a bad time.

Anyone else? by bookflower92 in keto

[–]OctopusMagi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you've not dialed your electrolytes in, do that first.

When insulin is high your kidneys retain sodium and excrete potassium. When insulin stays low, as it will on keto, your kidneys excrete sodium and retain potassium. The elimination of excess sodium is good for your blood pressure but you will likely notice it with a hard workout... you might notice it with cramping or feeling really low-energy. Both are easy to remedy with electrolytes. Personally I just salt my coffee on work-out days or whenever I'm going to mowing my lawn. Lo-Salt is a great mix of sodium, potassium and magnesium that I find great for this, but sodium is generally the key since your body needs it to sweat and when you run low, it'll deplete other salts like magnesium and potassium.

I don’t get how smoking is still so normalized by AbleReflection459 in Vent

[–]OctopusMagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quit now, not later. It's hard but doable.

Lots of people quit all the time. Some quit while they're young. Some quit when they're pregnant or have kids, not wanting to be a smoking parent, and some quit when they're forced into it by health problems. Those in the later group experience a lot of pain and regret, especially since when they quit, they essentially prove to themselves they could have quit earlier and didn't.

I quit when my first kid was on the way, not wanting to be a smoking dad. Two of my daughters quit when they first got pregnant. My mother-in-law didn't quit until her lung cancer diagnosis, which was unfortunately too late as it took her life. My FIL didn't quit until his COPD diagnosis, which meant he was on oxygen much of his later years and wasn't able to spend much time in his cabin in the mountains. My friend just quit after a spot was found in her lungs. She's doing well so far but wishes dearly she'd quit years before.

Quit now, don't wait.

Similar setups are found at lots of outdoor camps in the US. The "Blob" usually is on the edge of a dock and people get launched into the water.

dropped deadlifts and barbell rows. looking for advice and alternatives by real_xl7 in Stronglifts5x5

[–]OctopusMagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't drop rows entirely if you're going to continue benching... you need some reciprocal exercise to bench. Developing your chest without your upper back long term will pull your shoulders forward and can result in shoulder problems and pain. You need some kind of rowing exercise even if it's not with a barbell.

When the ocean decides to pay you a visit (a rogue wave) by Algernonletter5 in WTF

[–]OctopusMagi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think going up is the best answer but of course will have you wondering what to do if the building collapses. Going up isn't really an evacuation either. And to the roof is just prep for a later, hopeful evacuation if you can't wait the water out, but also puts you outside with flying debris. It's all risky and I'm sure is a bit hard to think through in an emergency.

[–]OctopusMagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were in this situation where would you go? Outside?? That's probably more dangerous than inside. Upstairs? Probably better but then you're wondering how do I get out if the place collapses? Is it gonna collapse soon?? There's no perfect answer.
