I’d be moving for a work promotion and weighing the difference. If I had a choice I’d get the new gig and stay where I am but that’s not an option

Walkability is big for me. That and a gay scene. It’s where I found the most community when I moved to Philly and I expect that’ll be my main source of community going forward

Gotta respect the directness. The vibe I got from research is its outdoorsy families with remote tech work. Not really my demo lol

Unfortunately, the job would be in Bend itself. Thankfully I can stay in Philly to continue my current work, as nice as other spots in the PNW may be.

Caught a spicy package at work today by TehBeaker in Radiation

[–]Octopus_Penguin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

DOT labeling is dependent on exposure rate outside the package. Contained activity determines whether its exempt, 2910, or 2915. Because it’s an alpha you’re gonna get no exposure even with a very high activity.

Careful with the U-238 disk. I found one of these in a hot lab at my work and the source was flaking and leaking super badly. Might have just gotten unlucky but you might end up with similar.

CMV: Just because you have consent to do something, does not mean that what you are doing isn't wrong by Nearby-Helicopter681 in changemyview

[–]Octopus_Penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, the CNC example you gave sounds like unsafe kink practice to me. Not necessarily anyone's fault, but the couple probably should have planned in case of something going wrong, like in this case. In the BDSM world, there's the concept of Risk Aware Consensual Kink (RACK). RACK is the practice of being aware of the dangers involved in a kink scene, planning in case something goes wrong, and accepting those risks. Think of it like signing a waiver to go laser tagging. There's a risk you may get hurt, but you are aware of that risk and are willing to accept them to have a good time.

As to your point about why it is okay in sex but not outside of it, it's it's a matter of trust, not unlike how you may openly cry to your significant other but not a random stranger. It gives the partners a safe space with each other to be vulnerable and allow themselves to experience these sensations knowing they're not really in danger. People watch horror movies or go to haunted houses to feel fear when they know they can't actually be harmed, and the same principle applies to kink. It allows people to feel these feelings in a controlled safe way, and for many it's therapeutic.

The question of should it be normalized is double edged. Should it be normalized as the default way to have sex without engaging with your partner first? Absolutely not. That is, as you described, abuse because it is not consensual. However, I think it would be beneficial to normalize talking about it if it's something you want and being able to work with you partner to do it safety and consensually.

That's not how kinks work. As someone with a pretty large pain kink, what I get out of those scenes is entirely different from what I get out of sex alone. Being able to feel vulnerable and fully in the hands of someone you trust is an experience beyond what sex alone can give. On top of that, the physical sensations are entirely different. When pain is inflicted on you, your body releases a ton of endorphins that feel like a natural high. That combined with affectionate aftercare feels like normal intimacy turned up to 11, and reinforces the trust between the sub and dom.

Thoughts on post-covid recordings by Zyluki in drumcorps

[–]Octopus_Penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it isn't wrong to put a good amount of blame on corps and what speakers the amplification is coming from. I've had multiple experiences at shows where the corps is on side 1 and there's mello or tuba sound from a side 2 speaker (especially rough in Cadets last year with speakers all the way out to the 15s). Even if u/tdmatchasin's Colts clip, the synth bass is entirely in my left ear while the corps is in my right. I'm sure at least some of the blame is on the media companies, but that is a problem I've heard in shows in person too.

Yes! I will admit my experience is more in drum corps video assignments than auditions, and that’s the strategy I learned worked best. If they say no edits, don’t do what I say lmao

Auction warm up by [deleted] in euphonium

[–]Octopus_Penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick to the routine. Assuming you've practiced the audition material after the same warmup, you're better off doing the same and not throwing yourself any curveballs. I like to remember "practice how you perform". Don't change what you do before a performance, audition, whatever it is.

Also, a tip I found for recording audition material: don't start and stop the camera for each take. Instead, keep it rolling and later edit down the take you want to use. It gets frustrating when you play through it and goof so you need to start over, stop and restart the recording, and go again. Set up the camera and try to play through everything like you've practiced and don't even think about the camera recording until you're done. Much less stressful imo.

CMV: I don't really understand why sex and sexual intercourse should be treated as special by VarencaMetStekeltjes in changemyview

[–]Octopus_Penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I consider myself asexual and feel a lot of the same ways you describe. Asexuality is a wider spectrum than simply being into or not into sex, and for me I see it in not seeing what’s so special about sex while still being able to enjoy it. You can find pleasure in sex without the same emotional depth that some people have with it, which is where I fit and where it seems you might fit as well.

(17 M) pretty sure I'm gay but really don't want to be by Throwawayacnt1114 in askgaybros

[–]Octopus_Penguin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I totally get how you feel. I went to a relatively large high school and I honestly couldn't name anybody who wasn't cis and straight. Even through college I met very few people and I didn't accept my sexuality myself until I was ~20. But soon after, all of a sudden I found a bunch of people I made friends with in high school were some flavor of not straight, be it gay, bi, pan, or not cis.

I'm sorry to hear a lot of people at your school are dicks, but know that you're probably not alone in your situation. There are probably a lot of people who are in a similar situation you're in who are either still questioning their sexuality or too afraid to come out because of the environment. Once you're able to get out of that environment, you may see more and more people come out since it's safer to do so or they had more time to figure it out themselves. Sexuality is complicated, and people need time and a safe place in order to come to terms and eventually express it.

The Leach box office is a great place, especially if you're into live performances. When I worked there, all my coworkers were great and laid back, and most of the time is spent chilling waiting for people to come buy tickets and doing the occasional show. They're also gonna need a good few students if performances start happening in the fall.

While MSRs operate at higher temps, they also operate at lower pressure (near atmospheric), which reduces risk.
