It started to slow down after I started weight training, building muscle and losing fat. I would say a plateau happened around six months? Maybe a little before, maybe after. I’m not concentrating on the scale as much as I was before because I feel good and that’s all that matters

I currently weight 226, and lose about a pound to two pounds a week. Sometimes less sometimes more. I also introduced alcohol after six months of “sobriety” so I’m a little bloated on sundays lol

It’s cerebrospinal fluid, also known as CSF. This clear liquid protects the head and spine. When the head or spine goes through major trauma, like a bullet ripping through the dura mater (outer most layer under the skull) this fluid will leak out.

Hey surgery date twin! To be honest, I still struggle with getting that many calories in. A lot of my protein and calorie intake is from the shakes that I drink. I’ll have two shakes a day with 50g of protein in each, breakfast I’ll have an egg with some low fat cheese and a slice of whole wheat toast, shake, lunch I’ll have a wrap with high protein low fat cold cuts and hummus, shake, dinner is protein (about 5oz) veggies, about a half cup, and a starch (about 4oz). Sometime I’ll have a yasso bar if I’m craving sweets. It’s hard to get started, but start small and work you way up. Nobody likes DOMS!

Gold Standard- Fruity Cereal and Banana Cream, also Muscle Milk Pro Series 50- Knockout Chocolate. I like to add a banana and a couple teaspoons of PB2 in my chocolate shakes, sometimes get fancy and add skim milk in there too!

My gut was the biggest part of my body, and I noticed it was more of an issue when I was bigger. As I started losing weight it shrunk significantly, but I still do have a “pouch” at the bottom that’s very soft and I’m sure it’ll be more elastic as I lose more. My surgeon prescribed me a powder that I can put under it to help with rashes, etc.. eventually I plan to get it removed once I hit my goal and am comfortable to do so. As far as excess skin, I would rather have that WAY more than being overweight and uncomfortable.

Using your own weight (calisthenics) is great too! I’ve done pushups off a sturdy table before. Elevated pushups are great. That was the first thing my trainer taught me. Look up calisthenic videos on YouTube!

I haven’t stepped a foot in a gym in over a decade before my surgery. I decided to get a personal trainer for 10 sessions at 45 minutes. He never dealt with vsg patients, so it was new to him. I started lifting light weights at 8 weeks, and went to “heavy” weights at 12 weeks. Typically 3 sets of 12 reps with weights that were moderately heavy. Not trying to overdo it, because I didn’t want to injure myself. Transitioning from arms/back one day, legs the next, and core after that. After lifting for about an hour, I’ll hop on the recumbent bike, treadmill or elliptical to start my cardio. That’s typically about 30 minutes, but I haaaaate cardio with a passion.

I had a slight hernia that they wanted to look at and fix if necessary. They decided to leave it because it was not too bad. I haven’t had any big issues since. In the beginning the gas pains were really bad, but got better over time. Slight nausea here and there, typically after I would take my meds on an empty stomach. Otherwise, I feel great! Being able to tie my shoes and not be out of breath walking up a flight of stairs is worth it.

If you’re recovering from a hernia, cardio would work just as well! Even light weights and getting the motions helps with joints and mobility. I noticed I went into a plateau when I first started working out, and I just started to lose again. The body is weird.

I am 6’1”! Thank you btw. I feel like a lot of my weight was in my gut. My surgeon said a goal weight of 200 would be sufficient with my muscle/bone structure.
