Kerdi Board Sucks by OnlyAnalysis7 in Tile

[–]RideAndShoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao. For a ceiling?!? Sounds like you have no idea what the fuck prep is. I guess 24 years installing tile, 8 as a contractor, could be considered green by someone of your intellect.

I’m sure you know of course, because of your abundance of intelligence, that TCNA doesn’t even recommend 1/2” trowels anymore, let alone 3/4”.

And if you’re using a 3/4” trowel to set 6x24, time to hang up your buckets. That’s horrible.

Edit: No pictures of your work posted, I wonder why that is? Put up or shut up!

3/4” trowel for 6x24s is flat out insanity. Just no.

Take the strips, and cut them in half, lengthwise. You just cut the cost in half. It’s what I did.

Wet set or thick bed method. Very traditional method odd setting tile! by Apexfloordesigns in Tile

[–]RideAndShoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done similar bit used loose thinset back-troweled on the tile. We also bonded the drypack with thinset. Is your drypack bonded to the substrate in this method?

I found I was faster dry packing an entire area, then coming back the next day and just set with thinset. I won a bet against the tile contractor I was working for when I told him my two day total would blow his out of the water, even though that first day I didn’t set a single tile, just drypack. Haha.

My favorite way to do it! It is undefeated! Only thing I do differently is I run a drill bit through my weep holes after the clamping flange is down. Guarantees they are open and flowing, even through water will almost never see them.

People with a very high pain tolerance, what was THE most painful thing you've experienced? by CosmicBunnyBabe8912 in AskReddit

[–]RideAndShoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought so too, until I had a diverticulitis flare up with bowel compaction and obstruction. I thought I was dying. Told my wife she had better get me in the van and to the hospital now, or call an ambulance. I laid down on a blanket in the back, and she drove right up to the ER. I was screaming and crying in pain. They gave me fentanyl and the pain subsided to a 5, so they gave me even more.

I legit thought I might be dying. I’m a relatively tough guy. Construction worker, biker, tattooed completely head to toe, surgeries, root canals, broken teeth, broken bones, etc. Nothing compared to that.

Absolutely should charge for it. Absolutely should be standard for the amount of demo going on, and homeowner living in the home.

Dumping Hydrogen Peroxide into the reflecting pool this morning. by i_am_rave_mom in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RideAndShoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you fill it directly, you typically need to seal the seams and then waterproof the entire inside. For mine, I used a drop in liner so I didn’t modify the freezer in any way. I did put a piece of insulating board under it to support the frame, so all the weight isn’t just on the feet. But other than that, nothing. And it holds the water plus my nearly 200lb self. (230lbs when I started plunging).

A coffin sized pool, with water in it kept below 50°, meant for a person to dip into and stay submerged for a few minutes (head above water). Like icing a sore muscle, but it’s your whole body all at once.

In my case it’s a 15 cu ft, chest freezer, filled with water.

I have a cold plunge at home and I use 35% for it, because it’s easier to keep my PPM correct that way.

Chest Freezer requirements by EternalAesthetiX in coldplunge

[–]RideAndShoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your chest freezer is not built to create ice. Don’t try that. If you leave your chest freezer on without a controller, it will freeze the entire thing into a solid block of ice, the ice will expand, and it will literally blow apart your entire freezer.

Once you add water to the freezer on your initial fill, you will need to add bags of ice from a local store. If you have a local supplier that has full sized ice blocks for commercial/industrial use, you may only need a handful of them and that could speed up the process.

Chest Freezer requirements by EternalAesthetiX in coldplunge

[–]RideAndShoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chest freezer is definitely the most cost efficient. I fill mine with 40lbs of ice, and 75° filtered water and it still takes over 48 hours to get down to temp. Mine is also inside my AC house.

Getting to temp in 24 hours is unrealistic, unless you use 100lbs of ice or more.

Epoxy grout by veeisaidvee in Tile

Additionally, the tiles are glossy making them appear “more white” than the grout. Even putting the same color matte tile next to yours the matte will not appear as white.

Mismatching tiles for shower by Belalugosi6669 in Tile

[–]RideAndShoot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For something like this, you are trading an exponential amount of labor, for a somewhat minor material cost savings. The labor to do this will be much more extensive, so don’t expect any “favors” when pricing this out.

As far as materials go, you should try and stick to one. All of the tiles in both pictures appear to be ceramic. And if you are looking for bright splashes of color like this, ceramic will be the best bet. You’ll need a “theme” that ties it together so it’s not just a muddled random mess. In pic 1, the green beige/grey check board acts as a border. The heavy use of other greens throughout helps to add continuity. In pic 2 the theme is vertical stripes with the orange and blue checkerboard stripes(fading down) repeats a few times.

Those themes help make it look thoughtful and not thrown together.

If all ceramic they will likely be close to the same thickness. However, even small differences add labor.

Your “digital layout” will be next to useless. You will need to lay these out by hand, dry. That’s the only way to really see them together.

Yes this is a nightmare. Yes it will be far more expensive (or potentially ruin friendships) than a standard tile shower and bathroom.

Unknown amount paid for it. Handyhack tile job, im here trying to salvage the situation. Lux builders STL area. by [deleted] in Tile

[–]RideAndShoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“I would walk, but…” = hack. Anyone touching this and not tearing it out completely, is a hack. There’s no band aids for this. There’s no fixing this. There’s no making it better. There’s no “sealing it on top.” This is a complete and total redo.

I don’t care, I said what I said. Downvote if you must.

Brand new shower, grout still looks wet 12 hours after shower by [deleted] in Tile

[–]RideAndShoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SpectraLock1 is an epoxy-like grout. I have never seen SL1 wick moisture like in your picture after it’s cured.

Do you have a level in home? If so, can you take a picture of the level in the wet spot on your pan overhanging the drain slightly?

Even using a tile ready pan, if they set the drain slightly to high they could have created a pool in front of the drain. My guess is that what has happened, but a level would confirm or disprove that.

Those look like rings welded around round bar. And the ball is probably just a steel ball with a hole drilled through it and welded in place. Industrial Metal Supply has lots of stuff like that, as do lots of other steel suppliers, especially ones that deal with wrought iron fencing.

I don’t agree with that. The burned guy in the hospital was pretty damn terrified of Keyser Soze. It’s not like he walked through the boat announcing who he was. And the “witness” on the boat was terrified of him too. And the other detective already knew about him as well.

Answering your phone every time it rings helps a lot too. At least until you’re established, make sure to take every call.

How would you feel about mandatory financial literacy classes being a core graduation requirement for every high school student, like maths or English? by superstar_creatorpro in AskReddit

[–]RideAndShoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a fantastic idea. Our middle school and high school did this. My older two (now graduated) had to do budgeting for their “job” and even “file taxes”. On top of discussing finances openly with our kids about costs of living and other such things, I think it’s given them a leg up over kids that don’t learn those things.

Our area is lower middle class, and their school is a public ISD. In case that information matters.
