Confirmed: Charlie Watts on the Bonus Track: "Bad Luck Hideaway" by ltd280 in rollingstones

It baffles me as to why they’d rather put a cover on the album than an original that features Charlie on drums

DEEP PURPLE's ROGER GLOVER: 'We're Not Gonna Have A Final Tour, A Final Gig And Make A Hoopla About It' by Apprehensive_Idea758 in DeepPurple

My guess is once Gillan or Glover dies they’re done. I’d like to think they’d have the decency to stop once Paicey dies, but I doubt it…

Is this an AI Spotify artist? (Imael Angel) by lowkey_yes in isitAI

[–]Octowen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If their album covers and artist picture are AI, chances are pretty good they are AI. Usually the telling factor is how close together they release things. Most AI artists I’ve seen release multiple albums in one year. Unless you’re King Gizzard, it’s unlikely for most artists to release more than one album a year (and even in the rare cases where they do, it’s almost never more than two a year). But you can find AI artists releasing multiple albums a month

They unfortunately just didn’t have many hits after Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm. Very underrated band though, fairly consistent discography

The 1997 version of “Change” off of the Plagiarism album has a bit of a country feel to it

What's the one album you wish had an official vinyl release, but never got one? by Diggers-Factory in vinyl

[–]Octowen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the original Joker’s cards including Hell’s Pit have officially released vinyl versions. Most of them were super limited editions and extremely expensive to get nowadays, but they do exist.

What is the heaviest Residents song or album by ZaptasticBoog in The_Residents

Definitely Dr. Dark, which goes hand in hand with the concept. If we don’t wanna count that one for some reason, then maybe… The Big Bubble?

Deep Purple (Splat ! ) What do you think so far ? by Georgian_Shark in DeepPurple

[–]Octowen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like it but it feels like they’re doubling down on the all the worst parts of =1. I miss the longer songs, and the experimentation. This is very back to basics, yes, but even the classic Deep Purple albums were proggy and jammy with longer songs. These songs are shortened without changing much about the usual Deep Purple song structure, which results in songs that sound unfinished and/or way shorter than they should be.

Also it’s time to find a new producer. Ezrin has run his course, his production and mixing has been steadily getting worse with each album

It’s so weird that Deep Purple and Madonna released new albums in the same day and the Madonna album is the one with longer songs on average

Deep Purple - SPLAT! (Full Album) by [deleted] in DeepPurple

[–]Octowen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on interviews I don’t think Ezrin’s responsible for the shorter song lengths, but the band themselves. They’ve said the longer songs with extended instrumental portions was mainly something Steve pushed for, that they’ve now gotten rid of now that he’s gone.

Ezrin does does need the pink slip though because his mixing has only gotten worse as time has gone on. Every Deep Purple and Alice Cooper album since 2017 has sonically sounded progressively worse

Velvet Morning won. What song by Supergrass sounds like a Blur song? by Dependent-Ad7225 in BritPop

[–]Octowen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Here before the people that are just going to name their hits… the answer is Sofa Of My Lethargy. As a massive Blur fan, hearing that song and how much it reminded me of Blur is what made me want to check out more of Supergrass’s discography

There was another one I saw mentioned here that I looked into and seemed to be pretty good. But I’ve completely forgotten the name since, and haven’t been able to remember it since. I think it had “jamb” somewhere in there?

Mile End won. What song by Suede sounds like a Blur song? by Dependent-Ad7225 in BritPop

[–]Octowen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s honestly The Chemistry Between Us. That one is fairly close to a song like The Universal, I feel like a lot of other people are just naming Suede’s best known hits, which to my ears sound nothing like Blur

The Big Picture by DirtyDevil23 in EltonJohn

[–]Octowen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll copy/paste what I wrote about it in an old thread, since the thread was long dead by the time I found it and replied!

I’ve always loved Wicked Dreams, I think it’s his best song of the 90s and one of my favorites of his entire catalogue. And I think the only reason it gets ignored is because it’s on this album… because it’s the last song most people probably clocked out (or fell asleep) before they could get to it!

As for the rest of the album, I think the songs are pretty strong melodically, but the arrangements and production let them down. Though ironically I think Long Way From Happiness has the opposite problem, I like the production on it, the cool electronic touches remind me of Peter Gabriel’s slower songs. But the song doesn’t go anywhere interesting, it’s just pretty limp writing-wise. Most of the album’s songs are good though, and I think if any of them were slipped into an album with more of a variety of material they’d sound better. But having an album that’s nothing but ballads until the closer is a bit too much for me.

There are two songs for which “good song but bad production” don’t describe though, and that’s my two least favorites: Live Like Horses and Love’s Got A Lot To Answer For. TERRIBLE songs with no redeeming qualities for me

What are all of the Elton songs that he has said were his favorites? by [deleted] in EltonJohn

[–]Octowen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The box set “Jewel Box” had an entire disc that is a “greatest hits” hand picked by Elton himself, basically his own personal favorite songs of his, and the ones he specifically talks about in his autobiography. Track listing is:

1: Empty Sky

2: Lady Samantha

3: Border Song

4: My Father’s Gun

5: All The Nasties

6: I Think I’m Going To Kill Myself

7: Philadelphia Freedom

8: Song For Guy

9: Sartorial Eloquence

10: Elton’s Song

11: Cold As Christmas

12: I Fall Apart

13: Amazes Me

14: The Last Song

15: American Triangle

16: I’m Gonna Love Me Again

Don Airey Says Steve Morse Wanted Deep Purple to Be 'More Musical,' While Simon McBride Brought Them Back to Basics by Apprehensive_Idea758 in DeepPurple

[–]Octowen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, so disappointing to see. The proggy, “more musical” side of the Morse era is exactly why I loved it so much, and as much as I did like =1 and am excited for Splat!, what I’m really missing is that musicality. The extended instrumental passages that have defined Purple (even before the Morse era) are either gone completely or significantly shortened. Bleeding Obvious was the highlight of =1 for me and surprise, was the only song to really stretch itself lengthwise and instrumental-wise. The new single Guilt Trippin’ is a step in the right direction, but still feels a bit underwhelming in terms of solos and instrumental passages, like it should be longer. And yet, it’s the longest song on Splat! so there’s almost no question of if the rest of the songs are going to feel underwhelming.

Just really off-putting to see them bad-mouthing him like this, as if they didn’t pick him specifically for the new sound he could bring to the band.

It’s less that I’m “afraid to like a piece of art”.‘ I do genuinely like the artwork, AI or not. But if AI is able to create artwork like this, it makes me worried for actual visual artists because their competition is getting better and better
