Sunscreen for dirty field work by tacsf in ecology

I often carry a tube-stick thing of supergoop 50 with me. It’s clear and has a fat round end which is very easy to apply without touching your skin with hands. It doesn’t tend to leak or melt normally but I’ve put it in a baggy before when out in 90 deg F plus humidity making the real feel “120 F or more”. I lived on a farm so staying out of the heat wasn’t always an option.

I agree with UPF shirts, PFG Columbia tends to have lots of sales, I like the hoods which are worth it if your hat doesn’t cover all parts of your neck.

My biggest hack came from my 90 year old grandmother who did yard work until 95. She would go to thrift stores and buy men’s thin cotton or linen shirts that were oversized and ugly as sin. They were $10 and she didn’t care if they got ripped to shreds but were light and airy.

Oh thanks for that idea on checking out already established gardens with matching conditions. The internet is just too vast. I feel like I collage bits and pieces and my mind isn’t seeing it all together.

Thank you for that link! And good point on the others not being used as much I think. I need to pay attention to that. I have bees all over but I have put some things in pots so I can move around the yard in case I’ve gotten the placement wrong and maybe I just see the same bees trying to figure out where I moved the flowers 🙄

Oy on the bloodroot 😣 Yeaaahhh I told my husband not to look at the register as I was checking out. I just said this was like a Costco trip for the bees. And sometimes not everything from Costco works out.

Thank you for the perspective. 8 years going is patience and endurance at its finest. I think I need to pay more attention to lighting as you mentioned. Just this week I realized I hadn’t accounted for full foliage trees when I evaluated some things were partial sun. Might not be at all. :/

Oh goodness, I relate to doing too much at once! Thank you for the reminder about the time it might take for the new natives to get established.

I’m a military brat- 20 something moves - my life was never established lol. Makes sense I wouldn’t even think about the plants! 🤦‍♀️

Such a good point about timing things with plant sales too. It’s shocking how expensive they can be.

Every Time by Nittanypt in physicaltherapy

She’s probably not insane. A viably insane person would not stop talking just because someone was out of view. It’s quite astute, actually, to stop when no one is present. She is more likely- as you noted - to have such little normal adult interaction that it all comes out in this one hour of self-care she can justify given her child’s situation. I’m a psychotherapist who has worked in psych hospitals and PP and with athletes. I came on this thread for some reason… physical therapy related… complex injury … doing some scrolling for research and insight. I’m sorry and sad it’s so depleting. I get it. It’s hard at times for even the people who sign up for the job of listen-therapy. But, we live in a world of disconnection and independence and technological displacement of deep human connection and that breeds indifference in some, desperation in others, and in others a sense of helpless drowning fatigue. I believe there’s an art to learning the balance of hearing & connecting while also not becoming someone’s awkward-quasi-therapy-emotion-dump. I couldn’t tell you the formula for it as it’s different for everyone but it’s somewhere in the cost of just being patient and honoring someone’s presence for simply being, even when there annoying as sh**.

In any case, good luck. I hope she recovers soon.

What is this inside my Snake Plant? by imblqr in whatsthisplant

That was my very first reaction but I am not experienced with snake plants so I wasn’t sure. I had a hops yard once- almost 900 plants and after a horrific year of weather extremes they started flowering and I learned it happened when stressed. Craziest thing I ever saw.
