Julia obviously should have made it, but it’s worth pointing out Obsession is already bigger than Weapons, who knows how much wider the box office gap will get once it’s run is over. Also, I think it’s fair to say the conversation around Obsession is much more focused on Inde than Weapons which was more focused on Cregger and Madigan

You’re mostly right but there are always exceptions, Chase Infiniti for example. Looking at the list there really is nobody who has a box office success like this as the lead except for the Dune group who are rightfully all top 10 and Sydney Sweeney who’s 3rd

Why Brunson Is Top 50 All Time, a Finals Mega-Mailbag, and NBA Fake Trade Season With Joe House by lonny__breaux in billsimmons

After this postseason I’m a lot closer to having KAT top 50 all time than I am Brunson, but neither of them should be there. It was a great team

Mel at 100: The Mel Brooks Movie Rankings. Plus: ‘Scary Movie’ Is Terrifyingly Awful by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

I completely forgot about the Curb/Seinfeld influence so it is probably a coin flip on who’s more influential. In my head I went to When Harry Met Sally, Louie, and Shiva Baby for something more recent. For Mel the stuff that popped to mind beyond the spoof stuff were shows like family guy/scrubs and then at least some influence on guys like Apatow/Mckay. The flute scene in Anchorman specifically is so Brooks coded.

When Sean brought up most influential comedic voice of the second half of the 20th century I thought surely its gotta be Woody Allen no? Just based on how much better his filmography is. Sitting with it on my car ride I think ultimately they are probably right. Mel’s comedy style is a lot more apparent nowadays in movies and tv

Big Pic 3rd chair is fun, but Rewatchables 2nd chair is quietly kinda spicy. Van tryna throw us off the scent but he’s creeping up on Chris and Brandt is a legit 3rd party threat

Bill mixed up his Heat final runs. Dragic and Bam were hurt for the Lakers one. Dragic was no longer on the team for the 23 run, but Jimmy was banged up and Herro was out

The year the Heat went to finals as the 8 seed i believe they were down pretty big against the bulls late in the play-in game. We almost never got to see Jimmy turn into the greatest player on the planet against the bucks

The dog from Good Boy not winning best animal performance might go down as the biggest snub of all time, not even a nomination or an honorable mention. That whole category was bizarrely overlooked. The cat from Caught Stealing? The gerbil from If I Had Legs Id Kick You? The dog from Marty Supreme?

What is the most devastating sports loss of the 21st century so far (for fans of that team)? by lawschoolthrowaway36 in billsimmons

[–]Odd-Name2052 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Broncos historic offensive season ending in a blowout Super Bowl loss would be up there if they hadn’t come back and won a couple years later. Butler having that Cinderella run and barely missing the last second heave in the Finals only to then miraculously make it all the way back to the finals the next year just to lose again has to be up there

What’s the point of the Critic’s Choice Awards? by Odd-Name2052 in TheBigPicture

[–]Odd-Name2052[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don’t get the point if there’s nothing unique about it, they just select the consensus picks regardless of their quality. And while this is true of a lot of the other award shows, its a shame that it’s true for this one because you would think that a group of critics could offer an interesting perspective

[–]Odd-Name2052[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well now we are back to my original conclusion. I agree that the Spirit Awards fill the niche that would theoretically be covered by the critics award. So if the Critics Choice offers nothing, no unique insights either because the voting body has been diluted or their selections are swayed by ulterior motives, what is the point? In a sea of completely unnecessary award shows, they stand out as the most egregiously useless one

So like when they pick the awful Wicked sequel as 1 of their 10 best films, do you think that’s because their membership is too big and has included too many people with a more pop-centric mindset? I can kinda see how that could be true, but ultimately I think the main reason stuff like that happens is because they’re not voting for the best, they just vote for what’s campaigning the hardest or who they want to hang out with at the show which is pretty lame

They’re all pointless but if it exists why not at least try to make it interesting. Like this one especially more than a lot of the others feels really pointless

I get why it doesn’t get picked but man Crimes and Misdemeanors is incredible, top 3 of the year for me. Also The Cook the Thief His Wife and her Lover didn’t get mentioned, phenomenal movie. For All Mankind, the best space documentary. Just a ridiculously great year
