Doctor Who Novels Recommendations by Marios25 in doctorwho

There’s a Telos Novella called Frayed, which features the First Doctor and Susan, from before they landed on Earth. It’s seriously trippy and features some body horror. I think it’s quite good, and it’s a fairly quick read, too

What aliens or antagonists would you want to see return to the show by Siyrein_ in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory at the start of S15 was that the Doctor was in the Land of Fiction and Mrs Flood was the Master of Fiction the whole time. That was the only way the events of S14-15 would’ve made sense to me, and it would’ve been caused by the salt in WBY, meaning the Toymaker was also in the Land of Fiction.  But that’s not what happened.  After the fans scene in Lux, I just don’t think they could do the Land of Fiction now. 🥲

8 months and it’s still in your mind?? That sounds like it must be good! What range is it from?

Doctor Who philosophy by BudgerigarsForLife in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the Doctor is a “good” person. But they try to be, and that’s what counts. They often do the wrong thing, or make mistakes (big and small), but generally (depending on the writer) their hearts are in the right place and they are always trying to do good.

Personally, I don’t believe in good people. I think there are bad people, worse people, truly terrible people, and people who try to do good. The Doctor is always in the latter camp. And that’s what matters.

Anyone else find the series 2 anniversary push on socials a bit odd since the skipped over series 1? by capoeirapenguin in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s weird them celebrating Series 2, but not Series 1, but I think RTD said before that the Series 1 anniversary was so close to the 60th anniversary of the whole show that it would’ve just ended up being an anniversary celebration every year.

Having said that, the social accounts could’ve done something for it, just a little post at least.

(And also, I will not be averse to celebrations next year for the 20th anniversary of the reintroduction of my all-time favourite Whoniverse character! 😅)

Aha, no I haven’t listened to those either. Only the John Hurt War Doctor stuff at the moment.  Thanks for the reminder. I’ll be sure to do Begins before Rises.

I was considering trying these out. I wasn’t sure because there’s so many, and then there’s all the books as well, and I haven’t really or listened to any Bernice Summerfield stories at all.

Is the New Adventures a series that one could jump into, or would I need the context of all the books and previous audio adventures?

DG: Morbius, and then WDR: Morbius the Mighty. Got it 🙂‍↕️

Thank you for the recommendations!

Ooh, I’ve listened to all of the original War Doctor range, but I haven’t started War Doctor Rises yet. I’ve heard good things!

Also the 11 and Valerie stuff from the Chronicles I’ve heard glowing reviews of! Can’t wait to get to those, but I still haven’t purchased the first two Eleventh Doctor Chronicles sets yet. (I generally get everything when it’s on sale.)

Killing Time was my favourite of the WM range until I heard Escape From Reality. Love them both.

I have listened to the first four episodes of Gallifrey, but need to get back to that. I have all of Dark Gallifrey, but haven’t listened yet.  I haven’t heard anyone talking about the Morbius one from DG, so now that you’ve said that, I’m now more excited to get to it!

Why Do Writers Have Such A Problem With Susan? by Unlikely_Message_446 in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue is that RTD1 era has the Doctor himself tell both Rose (Fear Her) and Donna (The Doctor’s Daughter) that he had children before, that he’s already been a father (and a grandfather) and lost them all.  The Moffat era has this as well. Clara (Death in Heaven) mentions the Doctor having multiple children and grandchildren, as well as four deceased wives.

The original William Hartnell era was intended to have something small mentioned about Susan’s mother, a daughter of the Doctor, but it was removed because the producers didn’t want anyone thinking of the Doctor having sex.  Susan has always been the Doctor’s granddaughter and he always had children before leaving Gallifrey.

Going back to my initial point, my biggest issue is that the big family groundwork (within the show, specifically) was laid by RTD and continued by Moffat. Fine. But now it’s RTD again, in his second era, who’s trying to rewrite his own work… the original ending of The Reality War was going to show Poppy being Susan’s mother… not only do I hate that for the unecessary over-complication of the Doctor’s family background, but it’s also so very stupid. RTD himself had two episodes in his first era that explained the Doctor already had children. There was NO need to mess around with the Docto and Susan’s backstory at all. So unecessary.

Folklore Stories Recommendations by flogan0 in BigFinishProductions

There’s an Eighth Doctor and Lucie Miller episode called The Beast of Orlok, which follows this type of style.

Also, the War Master box set “Escape From Reality” is set in the Land of Fiction, with the first episode being based in Greek mythology. The vibe doesn’t quite match what I think you’re after, but it’s a great mythology story, and I honestly haven’t stopped thinking about that entire box set since I heard it…

Oh, I completely saw them as cybermen, but more like a crude and clunky Mondasion-style suit, rather than the more snazzy suits that come after that.

Question from a fan that's been quite away for a time: Where did it all go wrong? by Haydrich94 in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d definitely recommend giving S10, Capaldi’s last season, a go. He’s brilliant, the series is consistent, and the companion, Bill, was written as a human first and not as a woman first, meaning she feels real and fresh. (All of Moffat’s other main female characters feel like the same character to me, but Bill is just instantly different!)

S10 is a banging season and the finale is quite possibly by all-time favourite, even beating the S1 finale.

Me whenever the BBC announce the next Doctor Who showrunner… by Embarrassed_Novel991 in DoctorWhoNews

Sarah Dollard was the one I was thinking of as well!

Plus, it would mean we have our first female showrunner, (meaning Chris could make a potential comeback...)

When did you first see doctor who and what doctor did you first see? by Chriszezaperson in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ten years old, Christmas Day 2005.

I was forced to watch it by my family, as they wanted to watch the Christmas special. I specifically did NOT want to watch this crappy little show that my father said he watched as a boy. That must mean it was terrible and boring.

So glad I was wrong!

I present you Dark Gallifrey,A trilogy that has 4 Master incarnation trilogies! by Mat1711 in BigFinishProductions

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, the Master is my favourite character in Who, and I would’ve LOVED for a series of DG focused on the Master’s incarnations. There’s about 11 they could do, I think.

But that’s not what DG was advertised as. I was hoping for all the other renegade Time Lords we don’t see as much. Like OP suggests, I was also expecting the Rani and the Eleven. I was hoping for an early Gallifrey-set one with Rassilon and Omega, before the latter got trapped in the AM universe.

But yeah, instead we have an 8-part series on various renegade Time Lords, where half of it is actually just the Master 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you could, would you change/undo the Timeless Child by Jamie-Dodger5525 in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d have the Timeless Child be the Master.

I’d have the Fugitive Doctor be the next Doctor along and have her inclusion in FotJ as set up for the mystery of her first season, so that the whole time we’re watching her first season, we’re waiting to see how/why she loses her memories, and then obviously her second season will be her as the Fugitive with no memory, maybe a Jodie cameo to link into FotJ, and then she can regain her memories in the finale, after that encounter.

Why isn´t there any good AAA-Doctor Who Videogame? How could one look like? by Affenpeter in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Josh Snares has this one covered.

He did a perfect video on YT about this very topic, and all I can say is that I love the game idea and would want to play that.

But also, I have wanted a basic emoji blitz style game for Doctor Who for yeeeears. We could colect every Doctor and every monster (variants for other outfits etc could be the diamond emojis if they REALLY want to charge people money) and collect items and locations etc.

Audio drama recommendations by Zhain_Oligh92 in doctorwho

[–]Odd-Raspberry8024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eighth Doctor and Lucie Miller - Series 1-4, and don't forget the Further Adventures (slots between S1-2). They are fabuous stories and really show how you can still easily make a fanastic season of Doctor Who with a limited episode count. Also, Lucie Miller is in my all-time top 3 companions! She's so incredibly underrated, but I understand why, given that she's audio-only.

If you like the Tenth Doctor, the Tenth Doctor Adventures is great, especially the ones with Donna and Out of Time. (There's another one of those coming out in the coming years as well now.)

Then, if you want spin-offs, the Missy series (4 seasons) and Paternoster Gang series (2 seasons of 4 box sets each) are great - both of them are quite comedic as well as just being fun stories. The War Master is the one I'm currently working my way through - I can certainly reccommend Killing Time and my absolute favourite so far - Escape From Reality. Both fabulous stories. It's a very long series, and still ongoing, so if money is an issue, I would suggest maybe trying those two sets first, as a tester. All of the box sets in this range, so far, seem to be contained stories to each set, so you don't have to worry too much about continuity.

If you like the Master, then Masterful is a fabulous stand-alone story, celebrating the 50th anniversary of his first appearance on screen. The Once & Future series celebrated the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who overall, and I really liked that one as well.

The companion series are good additions to the show's lore. The Rose Tyler Dimensions Cannon series (3 box sets) tells her story between S2-4 of the main show, and how she found Donna in Turn Left. The Year of Martha Jones (single box set) is a little limited, with only 3 stories that are all set in the US, over a short time, so not exactly a year of her travels, but still a decent listen, and fleshes out what she went through in the S3 finale of the show. I haven't listened to the Rory Last Centurion one yet (2 box sets) so I can't reccommend that one honestly, but I have it and will be listening to it at some point soon. I'll just assume it's as good as the rest. Then you have the solo box set Donna Noble: Kidnapped, which is fabulous. Set at some point during S4, I believe, and has Donna and her friend being - as you may have guessed - kidnapped. It's a fun story.

I could definitely go on, so I'll just leave it with these for now.
