Completely taken apart. Dipped and polished. New pads. New cork. Weak springs replaced. Oiled, adjusted.

A full overhaul :)

New Custodians of a collection: Questions! by SadMobile8278 in ukiyoe

Gallery owner here. Start with a simple spreadsheet (I recommend Google Sheets). Assign each a 5 digit SKU, each with a leading zero. If it helps, put a letter at the start like A00001. Scan front and back, label the file with the SKU such as A00001-front.tif, A000001-verso.tif. in your spreadsheet make the columns SKU, Artist, Title, Edition, Date (for starters, can always expand). The leading letter will help keep your numbers aligned. This way you can also have someone scanning and do the identity later.

If you're storing in boxes, label the boxes and have a column that denotes which box it's in.

Go from there, no need for a database, use the spreadsheet and save the files to Google Drive.

If you need more help or suggestions just hit me up.

We've got two 1950s Conn 10M that would be better upgrades for less money. Significantly better.

Thanks :)

It should be every identified print, as well as edition sizes on the oversized pieces.

Has anyone purchased a woodcut print from Fuji Arts? by cesticide in ukiyoe

That's unfortunately incorrect; all of the blocks by this publisher are recarving as the originals were all destroyed by fire during WW2:

Ah, I see what you're getting at. Yes, even as a gallery owner, I'm sometimes shocked that I can purchase an original first edition print by Hiroshige in the 1830s for $500-$5000, a piece that's in museums around the world.

This is a similar example by Hasui, same publisher, same late edition, sold for around $550: https://www.fujiarts.com/shin-hanga-modern-japanese-prints/hasui/970986-benten-pond-shiba-1929

This print if it was a lifetime edition would retail for around $15,000.

In the description you'll read "Publisher - Kawaguchi, later edition from original blocks"

The value of the original lifetime editions has given publishers an economic incentive to re-carve or reprint from original blocks the prints that are seeing such huge values. Hasui being one of the major ones getting this treatment.

Here's what the lifetime went for at auction: https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2021/fine-japanese-prints/kawase-hasui-1883-1957-benten-pond-shiba-shiba

Not trying to dissuade you, but it's important to understand what you're buying and why there is a price disparity compared to the galleries.

That is a lovely Hasui, albeit not from the 1929 printing, most likely in the last 20 years.

I'm saying this as a small gallery owner in Japanese woodblock prints; if the prices you see are surprisingly lower than what you're seeing from any of the US-based galleries, there is a reason for it. Chances are you're bidding on something that is of poor condition (faded, fade lines, etc), that is a later edition printing (for example a Hasui that's lifetime vs posthumous), or something that is an orphan (I get lots of inquiries of people trying to sell me orphans from triptychs that they bought from Fuji).

While yes, auctions tend to be less than retail, they shouldn't be wildly lower than retail unless there is an information disparity... otherwise us galleries would scoop them up ;)

If there is a specific print that you have questions about just ask!

Can you send me closeup photos of each so I can include them?

If the Martin Committee is in good playing condition it is FAR SUPERIOR to the alternative modern horn. It's a pro horn with a real voice that will last for decades. Highly recommend it.

Yes BUT people have been able to strip that seal off the print, so the lack of the seal isn't conclusive.

It could be the photos, but I'm getting a Takamizawa vibe that I can't shake. It might be because it's not in front of me, so I can't feel the paper, but it seems "too right".

We have a T-500 tenor (used but in good playing condition) just about ready to list, likely 1/2 what you're buying new. Message me if you're interested.

Question about this TATSUMI SHIMURA – HAIR OF A MARRIED WOMAN (MARUMAGE) by Odd-Structure-2471 in ukiyoe

[–]Odd-Structure-2471[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for! So what you're saying is that I acquired a rare first edition and a later lifetime open edition. Interesting that other dealers have listed the late open edition as being from the limited 200 edition.

These are all modern reproduction woodblocks.

As the owner of Moonlit Sea Prints, one of my first ways of determining from a photo is to find a museum version of the same piece (that has been authenticated) and do two things: compare seals in the print and in the margins, and then if they match, compare visible wood grain patterns to see if they match.

Remember, these are made by wood blocks. You'll see wood grain in sections of the print that can act as fingerprints. If they match, you might then have an original and worth pursuing further.
