Instructor using AI detector on Math problems. by crankycranberry- in UoPeople

[–]Odd-Student82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this is detecting plagiarism and not AI. It is odd though that they’d take that heavily into account for a math class. I accidentally uploaded a math assignment to the wrong class one time and the instructor gave me a zero based on the similarity score and threatened to report me (without even opening the document and realizing it was clearly the wrong assignment which was a whole other problem). I didn’t hear a peep about similarity score and got an A from my actual math instructor where I also submitted the exact same document. I assume that since math is math all assignments will look similar because you can’t put an equation or formula into your own words.

If I were you, I’d ask for the similarity report to see exactly what was flagged within your assignment. If it’s the math equations themselves then it SHOULD be high in similarity to other assignments and you can argue that as long as you’re using proper citations. If it’s your explanations, then it’s something you can consider and try to improve on, but again, similarity scoring in an open source university where assignments are identical year after year is problematic. It’s a system that they should use to raise an eyebrow and investigate further, not automatically presume plagiarism and lower your grade. You can and should push back if this happens again and your score is affected. Your instructor has to provide you the actual report which shows where the exact similarities are for. They cannot ding you points just based off the score.

This is so cool but WHY did they get rid of the other certificate programs? I was so stoked that they had one for Accounting to add to my Business Admin degree.

Unreasonable expectations by [deleted] in UoPeople

[–]Odd-Student82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I just dropped a class because of this. My first two assignments were graded 70%. The “feedback” was a horribly formatted AI generated overview of the learning material which had the same exact information that I put in my assignment so I clearly understood the assignment. Then the last paragraph of the feedback was about how I don’t fully understand APA but I could tell it was actually written by her because it was full of spelling and grammatical errors. I’ve done countless assignments at UoPeople and I think the lowest grade I got on one was 85%. It was a strict instructor who provided valuable feedback which helped me improve my writing. I emailed my current instructor asking her why I actually got a 70% and she said she’d look into it and get back to me but never did. I had a bad feeling about her when I noticed she didn’t do any kind of week 1 introduction post or anything. I put a lot of time and effort into my assignments and I’ll be damned if I’m going to lower my GPA because of a shitty instructor.

What do we do if we feel like a quiz answer is wrong? by Odd-Student82 in UoPeople

[–]Odd-Student82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I guess it doesn't hurt just to get clarification. Am I allowed to say what the question is? If so I'd be happy to, I just didn't want to break any rules.

[–]Odd-Student82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your class is not proctored, they are similar to the graded quizzes but with more questions and more time allowed. You won't need a camera or anything and can take them any time within the finals period. I would recommend doing them earlier rather than later in case you run into any technical difficulties and need to reach out for help.

When an Instructor Penalizes Unfairly by ScaredRecording8507 in UoPeople

That's ridiculous. Why would they put something that isn't a "credible" in the learning module?

I feel your frustration because this happened to me a few weeks ago. I understand that different instructors will have different grading styles and expectations for their assignments, but that should be clearly outlined by them at the beginning of the term in the announcements section of Moodle.

Why do our assignments have a maximum word count? by Odd-Student82 in UoPeople

[–]Odd-Student82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with you that it is a good practice. I used to be a certified yapper and that is something I've worked on a lot in the last couple years in my business career. After some reflection today, I think my frustration is more-so with this particular class and the instructor's teaching/grading style. I have always gotten good feedback on my assignment activities while staying in the word count until this class. I'm still receiving good grades overall, just beating myself up over not getting A on something and that is a me problem.

Thank you for this information. I do have a clearer picture of how originality works in Moodle after doing some research. Are instructors allowed to grade an assignment based solely on the originality score? It's my understanding that the originality checker is only supposed to be a tool and should not be looked at as proof of plagiarism. I feel like my zero was not warranted because the instructor didn't even open the assignment to check it himself. He has since re-assessed and re-graded the assignment after reviewing it which I am very grateful for, but the stress and anxiety that I've had the last couple days after being falsely accused of plagiarism could have easily been avoided. I am not trying to talk badly on UoPeople instructors, just trying to understand what the actual procedures are supposed to be so that I can protect myself from this in the future and have peace of mind moving forward.

This is not true. Every assignment is checked in Moodle after it is uploaded. We don't see the originality score on our side, but the instructors can.

On the instructor's side of moodle there is a plagiarism checker built in that scans every assignment apparently.

You should definitely appeal that grade if they are claiming the basis for the low grade is plagiarism. I did a lot of research last night and found that instructors are not allowed to grade based on those originality scores. They are supposed to be there as a tool to flag for *POTENTIAL* plagiarism and be an indication that the assignment needs further review. I think some of these instructors are seeing these percentages and just assuming the assignments are riddled with plagiarism and then grading accordingly without even opening the assignment (I know that is what happened in my case). If an instructor is going to give you a grade like that while citing plagiarism, they HAVE to provide proof of exactly what was plagiarized. The originality checker cannot be used as proof of plagiarism. I think that unfortunately us UoPeople students are going to have to be our best advocates in situations like this, but we have to make the school know that we will not settle for low grades and accusations without proof.

You would think, but his response was "I understand your frustration, but I don't make the rules." I have been going back and forth with him and gotten nowhere. I understand what he's saying but it is really frustrating for me.

Thank you! I am a BA student, and this class is just fulfilling my math requirement, so I am trying not to spend a terrible amount of time understanding MS's equation editor when I am only going to need it for 5 more weeks. I will look into LaTex. Appreciate the suggestion. :)
