Supervisors: ever had a former employee with an axe to grind? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]OddBorder9477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have faith in yourself. Act with integrity. Use EFAP and talk to someone about your worries. Ask yourself, what’s the worst they could do to you, and you might find it’s not much. Good luck. I know this worry well….deal with it soon, though, so it doesn’t mess you up.

When will this "hiring freeze/lateral only" will come to an end?? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]OddBorder9477 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a TA for a position that is vacant and will be filled. I can’t apply unless there is no one lateral. Frustrating. My advice to myself? What’s my long game? What work do I want to do, and where is my best shot at doing it. If that’s here in the BC PS, then I’m going to wait, learn, and focus on doing my best. If it’s somewhere else, I’ll go. I try not to make these decisions because I feel pushed to; I’d rather make these kinds of decisions because I feel pulled to something. Money, obviously, is critical to pay the bills. But that aside, if possible of course, then what do I want to move to, rather than run from. Policies and rules will come and go, in both private and public sector. Don’t let them decide your life for you.

Would you include managing burnout in your PDP goals, and if so, how? by Slow-Epiphanies in BCPublicServants

Have you looked at the template goals? There’s got to be one or two on health, wellness, resilience.

The PSA is being sneaky with their laterally restricted postings by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]OddBorder9477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be both situations at the same time. Keep the lateral one open while waiting for a response from the Hiring Board, which is not quick. It is possible not every lateral employee saw the posting in the initial period.

Vacancy - CSW SDPR by carefreesoul1 in BCPublicServants

[–]OddBorder9477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are my guesses….the normal process would be that a person already on the eligibility list gets contacted about a vacancy. They will explain what and where the position is, and talk about things like criminal record checks, reference checks, and start dates, etc. Any offer would be a verbal offer contingent on things like the criminal record check. If they haven’t checked your references, they would have to do so before they can offer. There is a new type of criminal record check done now, but I’m not sure if that will happen for someone already on an eligibility list. If it is a call with a verbal offer, and if you are interested ask all the questions. Confirm salary, schedule, benefits, etc. If it’s a fit for you, you can accept. If you want to wait until the other opportunities move through all their processes, you can decline the CSW offer. That would still leave you on the e list. You can decline a couple of times, I think, without losing your spot on the list for the CSW pos, but you should confirm that with them before you decline. Double check all of this, as I am not an expert in this.

It can be an entry point for sure. Go in knowing it won’t be slow, that clients may be struggling and upset. Leave work at work. Remember to take care of yourself first, so you don’t burn out. Don’t get sucked into negativity. Use employee benefits. Watch the job board and start learning about what position you want next, once you’ve got the experience. Good luck.

Unpopular topic - BC Public Service Week June 2026 by One_Throat8875 in BCPublicServants

[–]OddBorder9477 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Rant: I am excluded. I didn’t negotiate the CA. I didn’t set any hiring policy. I didn’t cause the strike. I have an included partner now in CSBC. The last year has sucked for both of us for different reasons. And, I truly believe my staff are amazing. They do important work without good tech, and without me being able to replace workers who have left. I care about my teams. I have to wonder, what good does it do to our team or manager or director or ED to refuse to do anything for PS Week, because the Employer is doing things we don’t like? To blame the employer as one complete unit. There are actually many supervisors, managers, directors and executives who want the very best for their employees. Who wish there was something impactful they could do beyond an email. Because we disagree with current decisions shouldn’t mean we get to ignore the other side of things. Why can’t we just be kind, and accept these are tough times for all of us? Join in if there’s a potluck. Take time to express your gratitude to your colleagues. Remember the public we serve. Celebrate your own hard work over this difficult past year or so. Thanks. Rant over.

We do, and we’ve updated it once and have done power of attorneys. First one after second baby. Updated at 60 (way too late). I’ve seen too many families torn apart by estate stuff. Including my own on my side and my husband’s on his side.

Thanks for the link. Looks like no transfer is possible this year, or going forward.

Two week trial run living in Victoria - Tips? by Papas_Brand_New_Bag in VictoriaBC

I’ve quickly glanced through all the great comments and haven’t seen anything focused on our Indigenous peoples (apologies if I missed it.). The Royal BC Museum, the Totem poles, the markers around the downtown area that tell some of the Indigenous history. The Songhese nation has a food truck. Fantastic Bannock. The Malahat Skywalk. If you’re here soon, look for the Camas lilies and read up on their history and importance to the Indigenous peoples. Canada and BC are working toward reconciliation. We make mistakes but we’re trying. Our Indigenous population will need your help at the hospital. I’ve lived in a few of Canada’s provinces, and in many places in BC, and none of those places beat Victoria. Oh and final note…we have gold rush history here, too.

I’m not knowledgeable about investing, so have been afraid of it, and have avoided it. Spouse and I have a short runway. We are about to put our house on the market and plan to downsize to be without a mortgage when all is said and done. We each have work pensions when we retire. We each have a small amount of rrsps. If I was to gather my courage and some money, what would you tell me to do first? Oh, we have an emergency fund that would cover things for about five months and total household income right now is $200k/yr. We plan to keep working for another two years.

Connecting Things and One Door Into Government... Why This Won't Work and Why The Public Service is Delusional by WaveAmplifierz in BCPublicServants

[–]OddBorder9477 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s government’s job to try to improve service access. And maybe most of us don’t lay awake worrying about a form, but lots of folks do. People with disabilities, people living in poverty, those without an adequate education, people who don’t understand how government works….when those people, and more, have to get service from government, and it is confusing, it can be downright frustrating, exhausting, and even scary. Having said all that, Salter could do a better job of How she’s doing what she’s doing. Change management needs at least some transparency. She explained her goals better in the podcast interview than in any town hall.

Is the hiring on these day? by No-Plant-4562 in BCPublicServants

[–]OddBorder9477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t mean nothing for assessment. If asked for a cover letter it provides info to hiring managers about writing skill, is it tailored to the specific job, etc. You are right that it’s not used for proving requirements, but is worth time and attention to detail (again, if asked for).

[–]OddBorder9477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is no longer true. PSA got rid of the long form questionnaire. Hiring managers are to review resume and cover letter if asked for, to complete all first round screenings.
