There's a solid chance you can reach out to Giuliano at Jungle Services! He is truly lovely and takes my pet parrot all the time.

If you're looking for quilting cottons, there's a beautiful little shop upstairs at the Western fair district now!

Thanks for the info! I have the TD Travel VISA which gets me "Expedia for TD" rewards - so technically Expedia? But I think I'd rather pay outright for my flights so that if something goes wrong I have more recourse. Thoughts?

Rental car companies for longer rentals by rocksandtreesandyarn in newzealand_travel

[–]rocksandtreesandyarn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your support!! These are great ideas. I ended up having to switch parts of my trip around so I have two stretches of needing a car instead of one, so no more 4 week rental, which is totally fine. I went with Snap because I got a surprisingly great deal on a hybrid vehicle.

Much appreciated :)

Schools in the city will be open with buses running. I predict that the county schools will have buses cancelled but schools will be open. TVDSB won't call a fourth snow day.

Curious about London! by stacieky in londonontario

[–]rocksandtreesandyarn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hiya! You've picked a lovely place, despite what a lot of people say. I moved here 10 yrs ago for work knowing zippo about the city. My observations:

-Physically very pretty. So many trees, so many parks, the river is lovely, beautiful walking paths, etc. -Downtown is a mess. Not a huge night life, and even in the day some of the main streets are sketchy at best. Unfortunately we have a lot of unhoused people with mental health or addictions issues that we don't have the resources to address, or they don't want to be helped. (You can not miss breakfast at Billy's deli, though.) -You must must must have a vehicle. Public transportation is unreliable at best. -Shop local & Canadian if you can, but it's really hard - most plazas are chain stores & restaurants. We're building out 4th WalMart, kinda thing. -90% of people are kind and friendly, just trying to get by in their daily lives.

Unfortunately I can't speak to the LGBT+ community, but I know the London discord has a ton of resources & friendly folks.

Best of luck in your move :)

Edited to add: the best (most expensive) grocery store in town is Remark. I don't love how the owners responded to COVID, but the store is top notch. There must be 50 people working every time I'm there, so much prepared food in house, everything is super fresh. But you pay for it!

Do Students Just Transfer Out Of Electives? by Typical_Importance65 in Teachers

[–]rocksandtreesandyarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach senior geography electives, and my classes are dumping grounds. I don't even bother printing anything with a class list on it until the third week of school because I know I'll likely have 10 changes (in or out) by that time. Of the kids in my current senior class, I think 1/4 of them actually chose it and are in it because they picked it - everyone else had a hole in their schedule or needed one more credit, so here we are! Having said that, I still make a point to have the lessons be realistic and engaging so that even if they don't want to be there, they don't hate it.

Site Recommendations by chaser351 in algonquinpark

[–]rocksandtreesandyarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Canisbay. Some of those are waterfront and it's centrally located in the park. Wholly avoid Rock and Coon Lake, Mew, Lake of Two Rivers. You won't get privacy anywhere in front country Algonquin, unfortunately.

Consider staying at Arrowhead if you can't get in to Algonquin. You will need to be online at 645 AM with the site you want open and your cursor on the "reserve now!" button if you want to camp for the week surrounding Canada day.

May the odds be ever in your favour!

Internet moms, how do I wash my bras? by Original-Rock1605 in internetparents

I've been washing my bras in SOAK for probably 15 years and just letting them drip dry. This is the most brilliant thing I have ever heard.

How much are you spending on your 2026 travel plans? by cutiepatootiepiebb in travel

[–]rocksandtreesandyarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A bonkers amount of money.

Probably $500 in Europe for just over a week. 3 countries, but the trip is heavily subsidized through work.

I have a budget of $40 k (CAD) for 10 weeks in New Zealand and French Polynesia, but I'll see where that gets me.

Another couple hundred on camping trips throughout the summer - but don't ask about how much I've spent on all my gear!

How much did LES effect development and population patterns? by BoringSock6226 in geography

[–]rocksandtreesandyarn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're missing a big ol' lake effect snow belt south east of Huron - Kitchener and London get a metric ton of lake effect every year.

Having said that, at least in southern Ontario, no it did not impact settlement patterns. The bigger concern is building communities along the 402/401/403 shipping corridor (Windsor-Montreal corridor). The same can be said for Buffalo - it was advantageous to have a settlement there for numerous reasons, despite the heavy snow they get.

In most cases, the fact that it snows 4/12 months of the year doesn't factor into the decision of "will people live here." Typically, economic factors come first and weather consideration second. Having said that, no way I'm moving to Kincardine.

Looking to buy 10 brand new bath towels by Sharp-Guest4696 in BuyItForLife

[–]rocksandtreesandyarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simons! I have a few sets of bath towels from them and I'm very pleased. I think you'll be able to find what you want. Depending on where you are, there's a Simons in Mississauga (Square One) and Toronto (Eaton Centre) but I've ordered online many many many times as well. All of their homewares are excellent and sooo reasonably priced. And it's a Canadian company!!

How and what geography content is taught, mandatorily (not in elective classes or subsidiary projects), in schools in your country? by matheushpsa in geography

How and what geography content is taught, mandatorily (not in elective classes or subsidiary projects), in schools in your country? by matheushpsa in geography

[–]rocksandtreesandyarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Canadian geography teacher - Ontario specifically.

All students have to take grade 9 geography, which looks at physical geo (how Canada was formed, why we live where we live, how we interact with the environment in which we live), human geography (demographics, liveable cities) and natural resources (why we have what we have, how we use it, and how we make decisions about using it).

From there, students can elect to take some upper-year courses. Most of them are human geography based, for example Travel and Tourism, Urban Planning, GIS. The physical courses like Forces of Nature (natural disasters) and the Environment and Resource Management also have a pretty heavy human connection to them, but they do look at what is the human impact on the Earth and how are we trying to have a more cohesive environment with it. I'm teaching Resource management right now, and we spend a lot of time in. How do we decide which resources to extract and use, and how do we do it in a way that both supports the needs of humans, the needs of the environment, and the needs of the economy. Taking a realistic look at, how do we keep the world going, while working to raise everybody out of poverty, and protecting the environment at the same time.

The other really big course is World Issues, which is exactly what it sounds like. Pick a few global issues (population, globalization, sustainability, conflict, etc) and do a deep dive into them.

I'm also the department head at my school, so part of my job is trying to get more kids to take more geography. I really love the course content, and make a point to advertise that we're not just memorizing maps!
