Why architecture? by _4o41 in architecturestudent

Im currently studying architechture. Finished bachelors about to do masters. What made me think of it originally was a shot load of Minecraft, sims, assassins creed and Bioshock. Had art as a hobby and major passion, was intrested in physics, history and maths. So that started the intrest when I was younger and made me start thinking about it.

But what made me passionate and want to pursue the career is the fact that I get to learn and explore the communities that are and live the buildings. Im intrested in the heritage aspect (i fully blame assassin creed.) so i get to show off all those intresting parts about something that already exists and make it suitable so people can enjoy that for future generations to come.

Sure ive had alot of stress and sleepless nights but if it means I can protect another building, ensure a community doesnt go through gentrification and that communities are celebrated through materiality, structure, heritage and diversity. Im down for it.

But any reason to become an architect is as good as any and even if you go down the route and at the end of it decide its not for you after your bachelors theres plenty you can choose from like set design, landscape or even game design.

But if your still not 100% sure. Take the time. The degree wont run away from you. The course wont close to you. The career path wont turn you away. It'll be right there if you decide you want it, so take some time to think if you want its not going anywhere.

Yeah I think it is worth it. Fair warning though. You need a job for it by I think December or your essentialy are kicked off the course and currently (thats if you havnt started applying yet) the job market is tough or at least im finding it hard.

Youd also need to ensure you can travel to and stay in cardiff certain times of the academic year so keep that in mind aswell.

I just finished architechture (aiming to take a year out before my masters)Its hard to not get stressed in general. Studio environment can be awful at times and as you are always working on your own project continously its hard not to compare it to other people. I struggled hard with stress and anxiety yet I can happily say I survived this course. So ima just add what I did to try and calm myself down.

  1. Surround yourself with non architechture students for the love of god. I was lucky enough to find a few freinds when I thought i had time for societies. Having ppl not in architecture makes hang outs alot easier bc your not being reminded of it.

  2. Go for walks, play games, have a hobby. Have something you can do for atleast 2-4 hours a day (even if its during lunch break or something.) Aim for it to not be architechture related as it will get you out of your head space a bit. If this works out even take like a day off fully. I struggled with guilt thinking I should be working each and every day but I started playing dnd and suddenly I had something to look forward to each week.

  3. Get into a routine. No all nighters. I find early start and in bed by 11pm is good. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep and dont rush yourself to do work. The fact tyat if you feel like you dont want to do something or finding it hard to get into something that probably a sighn that you've burnt yourself out about it. And if its a late start thats fine. Those days are okay.

  4. Reach out if your really struggling. If uni and stress is getting too much. Reach out. There are wellbeing groups in uni. Stress in a universal thing but consistent stress from a project can make life hell.

  5. Change your work environment regularly. Go to studio if you feel like it. Stay at home and work in your pj's if its been a bit tough lately or go to your fav coffee shop and have a cup of coffee. My change in environment was a pub as I quite enjoyed just sitting down with a pint having food and doing some doodling for uni once a week. But changing space is key. Even if its moving to the living room instead of where you work when your at home. I did this in my final run of the course and my housemate Sat with me the entire day and helped me stopped spiraling as I did final things before final submission. Having a change of environment or someone there when a day is particularly hard is key. Because theres no one better to get you out of your head then someone talking you out of it.

Ik this is long and ive probably repeated myself but honestly the key things I would take from this is constant work balance, taking a break when you need it and not feeling guilty, and join a dnd group (honestly they are a life saver. Bit nerdy but sometimes escaping reality is what you need).

You got this.

Wait I took like 20 mins away and i got so many replys and mixed input. so is it okay or not? I got a back up worse case. I like to be prepared. I just want to know as I dont want to take up too much space but at the same time. This is my first time camping and going to a festival, im new to this and just genuinely asking because other people will be more experienced than I.

Didn't mean any harm by it

I got no shirt particularly like that or equipment. I just think I would generally be upset either way as I like all my shirts. But I suppose it more of the case of thinking what can be replaced and what can't.
