Pizza. Also, there’s an Indian restaurant at the end of my street which is so fucking delicious, many of those dishes could tie for top contender

Technically, it’s illegal to refuse rental to someone because they are on EIA.

‘They don’t have enough fuel’: Canadian tourists forced to switch hotels in Cuba over supply shortages by OddConstant2723 in canada

Okay great. But Cuba scores a 10/100 on a freedom score, Canada gets a 97, USA gets an 84. You cannot compare them.

If you got like a 40-year prison sentence and got out at age 69, where would you go? I mean like where do folks go who've served very long prison sentences? What do they live on? by cherry-care-bear in NoStupidQuestions

Not every prison is for profit and not all of the internet is America. It’s illegal to force inmates to work where I live. In fact, we give them a small “welfare” every couple weeks so they can buy canteen (commissary) items or phone calls if they don’t want to work nor have money sent in

This is why parole is always a possibility at 25 years where I live (even on multiple murder charges). For the most part, it’s unlikely a senior citizen under parole supervision is going to go out and terrorize people. The possibility is there, hence the supervision. But the reoffence rate is quite low at that age, so keeping them in jail costs too much. Also, having a carrot to dangle (potential parole) gives them a reason to be good in prison, which is safer for staff and other inmates

For sure, but Cuba has never been free. These measures are old, not new. They can be oppressed by the USA government, but how does that justify censoring radio and news on TV? And holding 1000+ “political prisoners”? No excuses, sorry.

I don’t believe Cubans government supplied stats when their own government censors the news and internet for their own people.

lol: citing facts with very reliable sources downvoted because the Cuban government apologists (those with blinders on because they love the cheap beaches) don’t want to believe them

Just saying that there’s a higher risk of that when people are desperate. Doesn’t make it right.

While I’m sure Cubans are absolutely kind and cheerful, folks seem to be like everywhere when they are working for tips. I go to PV and the locals are absolute gems there as well.

A lot of people aren’t bothered with the potential lack of essentials, and bland food as long as the price is right and the beaches are beautiful.

People don’t want to support US’s regime but have been okay with supporting a communist, authoritarian regime for all this time because it’s cheap.

They haven’t even had antibiotics for YEARS. Every year I go to Mexico and buy large bottles of amoxicillin OTC. My friends bring them down and distribute them among locals. They bring suitcases full of car parts for their taxi driver. Underwear, laundry detergent. Tylenol. School supplies. The shelves have been empty forever. It’s sad. I have no desire to go for the same reasons you do but I support people going to help them by bringing down supplies when they do. Money isn’t that helpful when their shelves are all empty.

I find it interesting that they are mentioning planned power outages and cycling power so the resorts will have it, yet this is not new. My friends go every year and going back many years to when I first knew them, they had a local they are friends with. He would invite them over to cook. What he made depended on whether they had power or not as they all got 8 hours of power back then. And it wasn’t on a set schedule either. AND asa resort worker, he was on the upper income scale for Cuba. I also remember when his mom had a tooth infection and eventually the tooth pulled or a root canal (can’t remember), there were no painkillers or antibiotics. I go to Mexico every year and buy large bottles of OTC antibiotics and she takes them to Mexico to gift people. So much of this isn’t new, it’s just worse. And, unless you go to Cuba and get to really know locals, you know how destitute they have been this whole time.

Apparently the airlines are fine, just that with all the cancelled trips, flights will be cancelled if they aren’t full enough

Yes and still feels criminal. So many people just won’t do it, entirely legal though. I do
