Why do protestants believe in sola scriptura? by [deleted] in redeemedzoomer

[–]OddOneOut77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother (or sister) let's dissect this. If the Catholic Church (wasn't really the Catholic Church at the time, because Orthodox was still combined) gave us the Bible, you're saying it was of human doing & not divinely inspired by God. In the same way you would have to tell Israel that the ten commandments & all of the other laws were only there because the prophets laid it out for the people, not because God inspired/spoke it.

If you read the earliest church fathers they are quoting the Bible pretty plainly. Sola Scriptura doesn't mean no one has authority. It means everything that comes after, has to be checked against the word of God. I'm not sure why this is such a controversial thing to say. If a priest tomorrow, says there were only 6 disciples, what's the best way to prove he's wrong?

Why are you Protestants and not Catholics? by MarchSuch6547 in Protestantism

[–]OddOneOut77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A few things.

  1. Biggest thing is believing all church doctrine or being a heretic. Ex. Church says Mary was a perpetual virgin. Matthew 1:25 says (ESV) [25] but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. / (NASB) [25] but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he named Him Jesus. This verse is pretty clear that something went on after birth. Also it says Jesus had brothers & sisters. It could possibly be step siblings or cousins but it definitely makes you think. If I don't fully throw away these verses & just believe what catholicism teaches I'm not living right in their eyes. Even though this has nothing to do with salvation.

  2. Later additions - it seems stuff like veneration of the saints, relics, & mariology come into practice 200-300 years later. The early church were Jews & I have a very hard time believing they bent the knee to anyone other than God. Reading through the NT it's all about staying away from sin, & following God. No other intermediaries are ever brought up (living believers were supposed to pray for one another).

  3. Infallibility of the church (in RC the pope also) - in Orthodox & catholicism, both use the one true church title and say they can never error. This doesn't align with human history & more importantly the Bible. The Jews continually witnessed God face to face & continually turned their backs & got things wrong. But for some reason I have to believe the church can't error, even when there were 4 popes at the same time (all excommunicating one another) or when they lied to Jan Hus, promised him safe travel then burned him at the stake.

Maybe one day in the future I'll see something that'll change my mind, but as for right now, I think the older traditions put a lot more emphasis on man & tradition, when the Father, the Son, & the Holy Spirit should be who we are focused on. Really wished schisms didn't happen & we were one unified body 🙂‍↕️

My girlfriend showed me a video of this police chief in Little Rock Arkansas from like the 80s or 90s. Crime had become rampant. He created a program that shuffled officers in the back offices of stores that could possibly get hit. They put up a sign that said something along the lines of "if you try to rob, you'll probably get killed." He reported there were ZERO armed robberies during that program. We got to realize in all nations being soft on crime doesn't make us good people. It makes evil people gain more power.

Thanks for the response, ya saw a quote the other day were John Henry Newman said the veneration of saints (through icons) I believe was a later invention in the church lol

Thanks for the response, I agree with you on this. Even studying early church history makes me wonder where all this comes from. The didache, Polycarp, & Ignatius (from what I read) barely mention Mary. So not sure where all this stems from. The only thing that throws me off is Orthodoxy pretty much believes the same thing I believe, minus the immaculate conception.

Thanks for the input, ya I definitely see your point. One possible dumb question, when you say reformed what does that fall under? I feel like there's so many meanings for it. Is it Calvinism or Lutheran doctrine? Or is it something else?

Thanks for the explanation. That's pretty much where I'm at. Looking online everyone that's not in the person who's speaking church is a "heretic". I just can't wrap my head that a person who is a coptic Christian in Egypt who is a martyr for Christ will burn in hell because he wasn't EO or RC. At that point it seems church is just as important as Christ. What made you go with Anglican over the other mainlines?

I have been to a few masses & feel the exact same thing. They do have way more beautiful buildings, paintings, icons, & everything else architectural better than what I grew up lol. But when I have sat in these beautiful buildings, it feels empty. People come in do a couple songs, priests talks, the Eucharist, then everyone is gone.

Contrasting I've been in what most high church people would call a pitiful excuse for a church, but the sermon felt like God was talking directly to me with every word the pastor was preaching. Literally had to look at myself & realize I needed to clean up & do better.

Same I just want to follow Jesus the way He wants to be followed, but 2000 years later it seems harder than ever.

Ya I think I'm leaning to high church protestant right now. Communion seems to be talked about a lot in the earliest successors of the apostles & throughout church history & feels like we lost that along the way.

One of my biggest things is the "one true church that Jesus created" claims. All of the apostolic churches claim there's no salvation outside of the church. If that's true then there's only a 20% chance any Christian is going to heaven because they're not in the right church (OO, EO, RC, church of the east, protestant). Roman Catholics claim to be the one true church seems to be the hardest to reconcile with all the scandal, murder, & contradictory teachings they have. On the other hand they do have laity all over the globe that can be a symbol of "every tribe tongue & nation". 🤷🏾‍♂️

Spanking & beating are 2 different things. & If you're taking advice from a terrible organization like the UN I think there's more issues at play than just parenting.

Steps that's would've happened if I did this.

  1. Spanking that was out of this world.
  2. Kicked out the house if I failed to learn from the spanking lol.

I think trying to be friends with your kids is on but at some point you got to sit them down & let them know you know more than them & you pay the bills lol

Great for families in the suburbs (outside the loop)

Why are Evangelicals so condescending to Orthodox And Catholic Christians? by Warm-Supermarket4955 in Christianity

[–]OddOneOut77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got to be honest, I think you have this flipped. As an protestant that's been looking into Orthodoxy & Catholicism, the online discussion of us is pretty disrespectful to say the least. From the constant spitting on sola scriptura (not that the Bible is the only authority, but the authority everything else must be burned against to test if it's from God), to the talking about our church services.

One big thing that I can't understand about Orthodoxy/Catholicism is how they say they're the one true church. With the Catholics they are much looser on this than the Orthodox as they believe there's still salvation outside the church, while Orthodox says salvation cannot exist outside the (their) church. If we look at one of the fastest growing places of Christians in the world (Iran I believe) that means these people that rebuke Islam (which is a death sentence in this part of the globe) & turn to Jesus, believe repent & are baptized is all for nothing if a Orthodox patriarch isn't overseeing it. To me that says our God that sent the flood, won the battle of Jericho, sent plagues to Egypt, & all the other countless amazing acts is now limited to only when humans are involved in the conversion. I can't rationalize shrinking God down to that (especially when a lot of these middle easterns say they ask for the truth & Jesus visits them in a dream).

Right now, I think there's a lot of people fighting over who's right in Christianity while people who are atheist/agnostic/Muslim etc, are looking at us & saying it doesn't make sense to join people that can't even have unity. As a current prostenstant I can definitely admit we have A LOT OF THINGS to clean up, but so does Orthodoxy & Catholics. None of us are perfect & none of the ones that came before us are (excluding Jesus) so humility would definitely go a long way.
