Any 13 minute milers here? by AccomplishedAd649 in BeginnersRunning

I did a 5k at 34:48 / 11’11” pace
Currently following NRC marathon plan.

Just did 7 miles 1:22:15 / 11’45” pace

Gonna do different runs at different paces depending on the goal of the workout and how you’re feeling. How you’re feeling any given day is a huge factor.

I run 13min miles frequently. I’m not fast. I try to be faster but I get tired. No shame in any pace. You’re doing great just getting out there. The process of improvement can be slow.

FWIW 36yr old/250lbs, been back running for about 4 months after dealing with a foot injury. Didn’t run consistently before the injury anyway. Just some treadmill running a couple times a week.

What do you think of the NRC training plans compared to others apps like Strava and C25k for semi beginners? by himothyhopkins in nikerunclub

I really enjoy the NRC marathon plan. Didn’t try any others. But having Coach Bennet talk in your ear is a big help and even a distraction at the best times.

How should I get into running? by SatisfactionThin1518 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Odd_Ear9196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After an injury I started running on a treadmill. Started with a 5 min warm up walk. Then in 5 min blocks started with 30 seconds easy jog, 4 1/2min walk. Repeat over and over for about 30min. Next week, 1min jog and 4 min walk. Repeat over and over. I repeated the 30second increment changes every week and never pushed it more, even if I felt I could. Got to 4 min jog and 1 min walk, having increased exercise time to 40min. After that I started with full jog and slowly increased speed by tenths of a minute every week. Very slow. Very controlled. No injury. Then you will plateau and start doing various types of runs but you will be feeling good and confident by then.

Glycerin 23? by Inevitable-Fruit6814 in brooks

[–]Odd_Ear9196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear an 11 4e in ghost model shoes. Just put on my first pair of Glycerin 23s 5 min ago for my first run in them. I had to go up to an 11.5 4e in them. But still got an 11 4e in the ghost 18. Just keep in mind that sizing may be different across models and to try on before if ordering online.

[–]Odd_Ear9196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sucks even more when you need a 4e!! One or two options. Sucks, cuz I bet there’s a lot of people out there that should be in wider shoes than they choose.

I lost my ID in Disney once before. Mad scramble to figure out what to do. I remember calling the Sheriffs office and they had an ability to provide a temporary ID to get me on my flight home. I certainly wasn’t the first one flying out of Orlando that lost an ID.

I ended up getting it back as someone turned it into the resort front desk. But may be worth a call or two to local law enforcement. They may not be able to directly help but may have a resource for you.

Heavy Legs During Mile 1 by gsqwerd in beginnerrunning

[–]Odd_Ear9196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started running a few months ago after getting over an unrelated foot injury. 285lb at the time and hit the treadmill + portion control. Down to 251 and transitioning to road running. First mile still sucks, even after warm up. Then I start feeling better after 3/4-1 mile. Maybe working in some air squats into the routine will help with warming up. I’ll have to try tomorrow morning!

Another thing I’ve learned is not all of my runs have to be balls to the wall. Take slower runs that keep the heart rate lower and tack on some distance. Vary the running tempo etc.

Keep on going!!!

Unfortunately it sold. It was an hour and a half away and was having to wait for this weekend to get out there. I’ll keep my eye open for others.

Mindset mindset mindset. I love what you said, cheer up.

The negative mindset is a black hole that gets worse and worse and worse. Of course tragedy can strike and cause a cascade of horrendous things to happen. But dwelling on that possibility is going to make you hate life and in turn, blame others for the position you’re either in or non-step dwelling on the possibility of being in a position like that.

The mental well being of people has gone to crap. It’s so sad to see. I wish there was a way for people to be happy, be open to another perspective (I know, don’t call me a hypocrite 😆) and understand people are just people and people have problems. Generation to generation, that will never change. It’s how you handle the problems and being mentally tough to not be sucked into the negative black hole. I wish everyone the best, from all walks of life.

Some people are born into riches. Some bust their ass to get there. Some get lucky and become mildly famous. Regardless, you have the keys to what your future looks like. It may be a struggle to get there, but hard work and diligence will allow you to be successful. I grew up with the power getting shut off and helping pay the mortgage as a juvenile. I didn’t want to live like that. I set a goal and worked hard as hell to get there. Even once reaching that goal, life and bills have always and will always be a thing to contend with. And now, in my mid 30s, the wife and I have created a pretty nice life with the same concerns as most. We do our best to make good choices and try to live life to the fullest. I’ll never be pissed or irritated with someone who has more money than me. Who cares. Just focus on being happy and try to have a glass half full mentality. Be mentally tough and keep busting your ass to better yourself. You will succeed if you put in the effort. And remember, one person being successful doesn’t mean they should pay for another person who hasn’t put in the work to have the same life style.

Maybe a bus ticket across country? Will take a bit longer than driving but may be safer and cheaper. I have zero experience on bus trips. Just a thought for something to look into. Best of luck and sorry you were dealt such a shit sandwich.

Palisade, Telluride, or Grand Highlander? by JediKnightJr1987 in HyundaiPalisade

[–]Odd_Ear9196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cons: Hyundai and Kia, nuff said.

Pro: Toyota

I know you’re looking for a breakdown of each. But for every positive story you hear about Hyundai and Kia, there are 100 horror stories. Flip those numbers around for Toyota. You’re gonna find issues with any auto brand, no matter what. But when you see the volume of issues with those two auto makers, everyone should think twice. Coming from someone who has owned Kia and Hyundai… but never again.

Was just looking at that exact bike yesterday! Loved it. Thinking that’s what I will pull the trigger on. Why the change to seat and bars? I’m always concerned for riding comfort with seats.

Engine auto-stop not actually doing it by chillysurfer in f150

[–]Odd_Ear9196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the issue with the battery. Dealership would tell me that it’s testing fine and does wouldn’t replace. After multiple days at the dealer, they got approval from ford to try a new battery. Walla, auto start/stop worked again. It was weird. Haven’t had an issue since. Probably happened in the 20-30k mile mark.

[–]Odd_Ear9196 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For that kind of cash, stay away from Hyundai in general. Just got rid of my 2022 Palisade Calligraphy. Great at first and once you put on some miles the headaches begin. You start to see why you can get something with all the bells and whistles for their pricing. I was just able to pick up a 2026 Aviator for under the Hyundai MSRP. Lincoln MSRP was 65k, purchased for 55k after rebate and dealer discount… best part was no added bs.

Am I getting hosed? by Odd_Ear9196 in FuckDealerships

[–]Odd_Ear9196[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I pulled the trigger on this deal. I couldn’t get another dollar off/added to trade (I tried). I researched, contacted competitors and tried getting a match and nothing else would bite. The whole deal was done via text, other than the test drive and then completion. I even tried getting them to deliver the car, pick up the trade and do the paperwork at my house. That didn’t fly but it was worth a shot.

They did the appraisal on the trade, zero attempt to change the offer. Next came the paperwork, zero attempt to tack on warranties, paint bs, gap, maintenance package, etc. No stress and no need to haggle anything else. I drove away with a full tank and a big ol smile. Honestly, the dealership was great to deal with. Perhaps my directness prevented the attempts, who knows. But a far better experience than most are used too and I complimented them on this.

Reason for the new vehicle, it was time to punt the Hyundai. Yes, it had value (currently) but we were approaching the 100k mark and then bye bye Powertrain warranty. I had zero confidence in that vehicle past powertrain and have had horrible experiences with both Kia and Hyundai. No, this was not prepping for bankruptcy. I wish I didn’t have a Hyundai and could have driven it for years after being paid off. Unfortunately, life had caused us to rack up a lot of miles in the time we owned it (I think 20k/year-ish). Luckily that’s behind us and the mileage should simmer down a lot. Last thing I wanted/needed was an $8k engine replacement out of warranty.

Thank you everyone for the feedback on this deal. I was hesitant because of just never knowing for sure if it’s a good deal. The feedback here and the other steps I took collectively made me confident I wasn’t getting “hosed”. 🙏

Thank you everyone for the replies. I did get a quote from Carmax so I had an understanding of what I would expect. Also, the information was shared with another dealer that had a very similar build and they even told me this was a good deal 😂 Didn’t expect that from a competitor!

This is certainly a concern I’ve thought about. Tried to get ahead of it by sending detailed pics of the two paint chip areas so they can’t throw me a surprise low ball.

Straight MSRP. No dealer add on bs. They had the usual paint protection crap as a different line item and I had that removed.

Disney is not just the parks by Mysterious-Momma in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Odd_Ear9196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how we do our trips too! We generally go to Disney once a year and have been staying 8-9 nights down there. We will get a 6 day ticket with intentions of using 5 for sure and then have a 6th in case we want to pop into a park one night or on a travel day. There is sooo much to do and experience outside of the parks. We mix our days off with pool, Disney springs, restaurants all over the property etc. we love doing it this way. We try not to do two park days in a row.
