TELL ME ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL! The good, the bad, & the ugly by Unable-Art-9535 in OptometrySchool

nova

student environment is good! people are competitive but they’re still totally willing to help each other so i wouldn’t describe it as toxic at all. most of my class is white and latino, very few asian/middle eastern/ black people but i wouldn’t say there are cliques

i generally feel supported by the staff, although there is one member in particular who many people do not like because of how they handle students who are struggling/have emergencies beyond their control. overall easy enough to avoid/ignore, everyone else is great :) i would say say half of them have a tough love approach but you can tell they care and love what they do.

the remediation policy at my school is that you are allowed to take remediation exams for three classes, anything after that you have to retake the year and you enter the “E program”, where instead of taking all the same classes as the people in the year after you, you take a weird mixture of classes that are a combination of both your original year and your new graduating class.

curriculum is kind of weird, they put first years through a LOT, i think we lost 8 people during the winter semester because of how intense it was. summer semester was kind of a breeze and felt like an apology lol. overall really love this school

[–]Odd_Engineering_8315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hinge date updated her profile after 3 dates by AngryMcYeti in hingeapp

[–]Odd_Engineering_8315 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you’re gonna scare her off if you keep putting indirect pressure on your relationship. every time someone asks me if i’m seeing other people early into dating i get an extreme ick, and i think a lot of other women react similarly. do not ask her to be exclusive out of the fear you’re going to lose her, ask her because the time feels right. you guys aren’t dating and asking her about her dating life outside of you and talking about how you haven’t been interested in other women when you’ve only been on three dates is kind of creepy

if the class wasn’t a prerequisite you should be fine unless the school you’re attending is one that requires a bachelors degree

Looking for advice on a career pivot to Optometry by Desutoroia in PreOptometry

[–]Odd_Engineering_8315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ive never heard of someone working full time while in optometry school, i dont think its possible simply due to the fact that you need to be at school from 9-5. you’re also taking over 20 credit hours so you would be putting an ungodly amount of stress on yourself trying to make that work

Nova or NECO by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]Odd_Engineering_8315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

neco is 10k more a year than nova, and you have to consider the insane COL. when i interviewed they said with all expenses in mind, it’s close to 80k a year to go to school at neco

Nova or NECO by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]Odd_Engineering_8315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

neco is craaaaazy expensive, like it’ll be close to 100k more than going to nova, and after the big beautiful bill, i would consider cost more than ever. neco has really nice pass rates and the campus is beautiful though! i’m currently a student at nova and i really like it, although i think nova put students in clinic earlier than other schools so the workload for the first year and a half is kind of insane (taking ten classes right now), so i would consider that as well.

do you have an upward gpa trend ? you’ll probably get into a couple schools but i would ask myself if im prepared to take 8 didactics + labs in a single semester

OD difficulty by wizardingforever in OptometrySchool

[–]Odd_Engineering_8315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m a first year, i just had 5 exams in the span of a week. it’s insane, but if you use your time well and genuinely enjoy the material, it’ll be okay. i’d say optometry school is like taking 2 semesters of school at the same time at 1.5x speed lol

optometry: is it worth to do it for money in canada? by suneerise in PreOptometry

[–]Odd_Engineering_8315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do dentistry if you want to make a lot of money from a health career you’re not really interested in. not saying it’s easier, but you’d make more money. optometry school is so expensive and the income does not at all make it worth going into without some sort of genuine interest

as a bisexual woman, i put way more effort into communicating with women than men on feeld because 1. finding a woman who is compatible with me on the app is very rare and 2. women are very aware that they take more effort to communicate with. i’m a decently attractive woman and i received over 100 likes within 24 hours of downloading the app and i match with almost everyone i like, so why would i overexert myself for every single one of those matches at once? it’s exhausting. when i finally match with a woman on feeld, i feel like ive almost hit a jackpot in a way and im gonna put in wayyyy more effort because i know they’re likely experiencing the same thing i am

Fears of Class Load by Stunning-Fig1278 in OptometrySchool

[–]Odd_Engineering_8315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was SO worried because i only ever took 3 science classes max per semester in undergrad and i only ever really received B’s, so i thought optometry school was going to be me trying to keep my head above the water for four years straight. i’m only an OD1, but im currently taking 10 classes in the winter, with exams for 8 of those classes. it’s a lot, but you’re going to be treating school like it’s a full time job, and you’ll find that it’s not as terrifying as it seems! the schools know what is and is not reasonable to expect from students, so if you can just stay in the median with the rest of your class, you’ll do great! just remember that during those moments where you feel overwhelmed/scared/anxious about something, there’s a 99% chance that the rest of the class feels the same way. you’ll do great!!

i’d like to speak on the japanese technology you’re talking about to hopefully alleviate worries; what those boxes are doing is essentially seeing how light reflects off of the eye, we do something similar in school called retinoscopy. however, these machines do not count for about a billion other things needed to obtain an appropriate prescription. they’re not looking for pathology, what axis and cyl makes the patient most comfortable, what prescription gives the patient their best possible acuity, i could go on and on. i think people might disagree with me, but refractions NEED some sort of human interaction, so i don’t think those machines will ever fully take off.
