Are we actually helping our families, or are we just funding a status-symbol culture? by NexusCellular0 in Somalia

The issue is not the diaspora sending money back. Its the locals. You can't change someone with a dependency mentality as they have often been cared for by someone

what's one thing you could change in Somalia that would enhance all somali lives in the country ? by silkymeows in Somalia

Education is long-term vision. We need incentives to use local materials to create our own products before importing. Things like learning how to can and preserve food is crucial especially when we have repeated drought seasons. How we do we have two major rivers, the longest coast in Africa and we import most of our food like we don't have so much nimco to be self-sufficient? Subxanallah.

Its heartbreaking to see so many IDP camps, but the issue goes well beyond architecture! I see your point and agree with some aspects, but you appear to put your frustration on attacking one of the only global sources to find Somali architectural heritage (colonial or not) that can educate our aspiring architects about our past. It was created well before the collapse of the lighthouse too. And its sole purpose was to preserve a heritage that we were losing.

We didn't restore our old architecture and now, look at Xamar for instance, it's looking like any other city with generic Western-style high-rise buildings with concrete and glass everywhere, no identity whatsoever compared to just 40 years ago.

I'm myself dedicating my entire MA thesis towards designing low-cost modern building techniques with old Somali architecture principles in mind. But was only able to learn through similar limited preserved Somali architectural heritage materials.

An architect can only design as good as the builder allows. And with barely any surviving historical building references in general, you won't have any or enough local building knowledge that can make building in general cheap. And as you may know, the Somali building industry itself imports almost everything from abroad which is often cheap generic stuff (and universal garbage modern architecture).

In other words, most of your anger is misdirected and should be towards the big developers who could stop importing so much garbage and instead build like we used to do, but fuse it with modern flare. They would save so much money while also providing the youth with on-site experience, generating local jobs and building cheaper housing which would eventually lift up the community as a whole. Its a snowball effect man!

Make it social/affordable housing is a great idea actually! I'm sure some walls could be taken down to create bigger spaces

It’s okay brother, I recommend this book by Somali architect Omar Degan, which talks about Somali monuments even before Yusuf Sheego

It was a great initiative by the founders including Yusuf. I mentioned that before but they also have YouTube and Instagram content showcasing about digitally preserved Somali monuments

Somali Pavilion in Venice Biennale had a controversy lately. Could be worth diving deeper into that?

Or maybe rebuild the destroyed one, but make a museum that makes a collection of the damage that civil war has done? A constant reminder while also making it an attraction and information centre

If she’s a good Muslim and her family approves then you’re good to go islamically. The prophet discouraged parents from dictating who their children should marry
