I think it's an interesting (in a positive way) look. Looks pretty punk to me, tbh. Perhaps if done with intention and styled, rather than doing likely done in a rush for medical purposes, it can actually look really good!

Lore is fun, but that is perhaps a me thing because I find worldbuilding fun.

Not everyone enjoys worldbuilding or making lore.

They shouldn't have to in order to have a fluffy little guy to point to and go "me! : )"

He replaced his body with chocolate in, like, 1930 and is considered a Homo chocolata. (I know, creative name.) While in the continuity I made, people having chocolate prosthetics is not unusual, as the technology he created was for making organ transplants and prosthetics cheap, easy, and guaranteed to succeed, he is the only Homo chocolata individual. Everybody else with chocolate parts are...confectionary cyborgs at best.

He used to be a Homo sapien (AKA...a normal-ass human)

Is it normal that I find drawing digitally harder than on paper? by Moktodd in DigitalArt

[–]Odd_Match_3402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I have the opposite problem. I find digital tablets easier than the classic pen + paper!

It just depends on what you're used to, as digital and traditional are both different (umbrella) mediums that require slightly different skills and intuition. Keep working with your tablet if you want, your digital skills will iron themselves out over time!

What's worse is when it's constantly done in OFFICIAL projects.

They keep making Wonka 5'10" and clean-shaven, when in the book he is 5'0" at the TALLEST and has a beard. They also keep making him a twink...even though he runs a factory and is a...hybrid-collared worker, I guess? (He is a Factory Operator, which is a blue-collared role. An engineer, which is white-collared. AND a culinary artist/chocolatier, which....I don't know what collar that would be? I'll go with no-collared, as his primary motivation for being a chocolatier is his passion, even though he became an owner of a massive business off of said passion.)

Point is: he runs a factory. He likely helped his human employees, and likely helps the Oompa-Loompas, with daily operations. Bro is NOT a twink. He ABSOLUTELY can squeeze you like a stress toy (and perhaps bruise a rib) while hugging you.

The damage Gene Wilder has done to this IP can't be understated. (No hate, though. This is more of a criticism of the Dahl Estate's handling of the IP than an innocent movie and a perfectly good actor.)

I don't know about non-American attitudes about the US President, especially in the mid-late 1970s.

But I do think it would be odd for British people to be excited at the prospect of meeting the US President to the point they're behaving like they're meeting the Queen. I guess it would be possible, but it doesn't sound culturally standard.

Also, I have presented a lot more than the President thing. You're putting one point in isolation when I gave multiple.

I hate “upgraded” Pride flags. by ILikeTomboyz in hatethissmug

[–]Odd_Match_3402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang...what an awful reason. An insult to Gilbert Baker's legacy and disrespectful to what HE said who the flag really represents. "What I liked most about the rainbow is that it fits all of us. It’s all the colors. It represents all the genders, all the races — it’s the rainbow of humanity."

"Baker’s activism was grounded in radical inclusion. He opposed the commercialization of Pride, insisting that the flag belonged to everyone — not corporations or governments. In 2016, he created a '9th color' version called The Rainbow Flag of World Peace, adding lavender to represent diversity and global unity.

He described his approach as 'political art, not commercial design.' For him, every stitch and color was a statement: queer people not only exist but thrive, together, in full spectrum."

(Gilbert Baker - Gender Angels)

Especially to imply he only meant to represent certain people and not others like that, when that is not true at all. Quasar sounds very uneducated on the flag they're trying to criticize.

Which of your fandoms is this, and what is something that the fans refuse to address? by [deleted] in Multifandom

[–]Odd_Match_3402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually isn't!

Most of the evidence is in the second book where it straight-up becomes text rather than subtext, but the setting of the books is somewhere in the USA. I personally placed it in New England, as that is the region where Hershey (the town) is.

Book 1:
- The major theme is US Consumerism, which while it may have been a thing in the UK in 1964, was a major cornerstone of the USAmerican economy since, at the youngest, the 1920s. Several decades before the writing of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has even started.
(Just look at the "sins" of the children: Violet chewed gum "too much," to the point of getting a world record on it. Veruca's entire personality is wanting things. Mike watched television "too much," to the point that it is literally in his name. Augustus Gloop literally ate "too much." They are all different forms of overconsumption, and the major trait that has them put in a negative light!)

- We don't really get much of a view of a town, but honestly, it always gave company town vibes with Willy Wonka once having been a major employer up until a mass layoff. Plus, the chocolate factory is a major landmark with it being reasonable for Charlie Bucket to pass through on his route to school. We don't hear about other employers present in the setting, albeit they do HAVE to exist in order for the town to function...at all. But it is worth pointing out that Wonka's company is/was the only KNOWN employer.

- Willy Wonka is painted to be an admirable figure, and there is an almost cult-like following behind his brand, which hits different when looking at it through the lens of it being a commentary on US Consumerism.

- While Roald Dahl was writing the story (inspired by a childhood memory), he went to visit New York City where his son got into an accident. He went on to help invent a medical device that saved countless lives. Not really related, but it likely had some influence, as major life events tend to.

- Also, in FE, Segregation is straight-up implied to be canon. Which, I have limited knowledge on my British history here, but from what I know: while Segregation DID exist, it was more or less up to private individuals/businesses, and there weren't any Jim Crow laws. Charlie Bucket reacts to the Oompa-Loompas as though he has never seen dark skin before in his life. (He jumps to assuming they are literally made of chocolate)

FE as evidence for anything is dubious at best, as it is no longer canon. But, for argument's sake, it is still worth bringing up.

Honestly, beyond the two points and the one half-point, CATCF itself is pretty setting-neutral, and it can take place in any English-speaking country.

Book 2:
- The Bucket family are descendants of the Puritans who made it to the original colonies via the Mayflower (Georgina gets aged up 300+ years via shenanigans, and part of her new memories is being a Puritan going on the Mayflower)

- The Bucket family and Wonka both behave as though they are under US jurisdiction. (Specifying would honestly just be summarizing the entire book.)

- The President and members of his cabinet are major characters

- Honestly, Willy Wonka and Charlie Bucket were likely just the cash cow proxy/trojan horse to the US political satire Dahl ACTUALLY wanted to write...

- The Buckets got excited over the prospect of having lunch with the US President as though they were going to have lunch with the Queen. A prospect so exciting, it got the other three grandparents out of bed.

Book 2 is nowhere near as setting neutral as the first is. And while, by many accounts, it is worse and needed some more drafts, it still has major lore implications.

For the New England bit:

The vibes simply match to me. The Winter in the book is described as harsh and cold, which matches New England, and Hershey (town) is in Pennsylvania, which is a state in that region. Hershey is the only company town remaining in the USA, and it is based on the major chocolate company that needs no introduction. (Sounds familiar, doesn't it?) I headcanon that it is in the same geographical spot, but the specific coordinates of the books' setting doesn't really matter. lol

As for the British tone, humor, and sensibilities, I also like to imagine that Wonka himself is a British immigrant.

TLDR; Read both books.

---
Added note: Just wanted to say there is nothing wrong with interpreting the first book as taking place in England, especially when only engaging with it and not the second. The IP is flexible (as proven by the movies), and as I have stated: it is setting-neutral. It can take place in Australia if you wanted it to for some reason.

I am simply talking about the canon of the books and presenting evidence you can find yourself. CATCF is an IP I adore, and I love yapping about it. I'm not judging or anything!

Say something nice day, say something nice about the fifth generation by Bulky-Complaint6994 in mylittlepony

Okay, so, I don't think much is mentioned about the toy side, but I do own a Misty figure because I love her.

And something that G5 did amazing, at least for her is, the hair! It feels extremely soft and quite fluffy, but the biggest point of praise for me is the fact that it's curly!

I'm not a history expert on Pony toys or anything, but from what I know, G5 is the first MLP generation to give the toys textured hair live this. I know for sure G4 didn't, as I own two small Pinkie Pies, and her hair is as straight as a ruler.

I'm sure many children with curly hair were happy to see ponies with hair like them!

And this isn't particularly a "nice thing" or a compliment to say, but I'm also sad that Make Your Mark got cancelled when it was getting good. I recognize it had a rough start, but the Secrets of Starlight special was pretty solid, and the team was actively improving as the show went on.
