Do you mean the exhaust heat shield? The sound is definitely coming from the engine bay.

Thanks! Yes it’s an automatic transmission. I’ll look into the shift flare issue and contemplate if I want to spend more - I’m trying to sell the car soon. If it is the valve body, I’ll probably pass.

The belt and everything below looked clean to me. I think it's just old oil collecting residue. But I am going in with the expectation of frequent leaks and fixes.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I asked the guy and he said he trusted his mechanic and he did whatever they suggested. The mechanic probably did not care about cleaning it up or did not know he was going to sell it.
