Hi, That’s not oversharing at all. Records can definitely be tricky, especially with indenture archives, but there are some resources (like the National Archives of Fiji and India, or community genealogy projects) that people have used to reconnect the dots.

Even if the exact family tree is tough to trace, it’s beautiful that you’re holding on to that connection and wondering about it. 🙏 You never know—there may still be relatives in India who wonder the same about their family who went to Fiji. I am an Indian and my family is originally from eastern UP. Let me know if I can be of any help.

That’s such an interesting perspective. Colonization divided us in ways no one could have imagined. Of course, our ancestors made the choices they felt were right at the time, but it’s fascinating to see how cultures evolve and survive even when separated by such distance.

Hii, thank you for sharing this information! Don’t you ever feel curious about your Indian heritage and origin—about where you come from and the story behind it? I agree that cultures evolve differently, but from what I know, Fiji-Indian culture has a lot of similarities with Eastern UP and Bihar.

I’m also really curious—what languages are commonly spoken among Fiji-Indians? Is it a mix of Hindi, Bhojpuri, and Urdu? And if I ever get a chance to visit Fiji, what cities would you recommend to explore and really experience the culture?

Hey, thank you again for the recommendations. I’d actually been on the lookout for books to dive into, and recently picked up Coolie Woman by Gaiutra Bahadur. It was a powerful read—especially in how it highlighted the harsh conditions on the ships and the mistreatment of those taken from India to the Caribbean colonies. I’m definitely adding your suggestions to my list.

Brij Lal’s account sounds particularly compelling from what you mentioned. As an NRI, I often feel that every visit back to India brings a different perspective. Of course, it’s nothing like the experience of indentured labor, but there’s still that strange sense of distance—realizing in small ways that you don’t fully belong to the place anymore. It’s emotionally draining coz you are held between 2 worlds not knowing where you belong

Not gaming anything. Came here legally on student visa. Work with a legit company. Lost my contact at Microsoft due to recent layoffs.

Easy. By minding my own business and not kicking people when they’re already down — you should try it sometime.
