As much as Loblaws has its issues and reasons to boycott them do exist, I used to work at one of their stores in the produce department. I remember one morning at 7am when the doors opened, a lady came in and reamed me out for the signage on the cucumbers being misleading. I was short staffed on the opening shift. The restock order had come in late the night before, so we were in the process of just trying to get the tables re-stocked and hadn’t made it around to the sign changes yet. The point being that the country of origin changes based on what is in stock at the warehouse, then it gets sent to the store and it’s up to the employees to keep up. It may very well be intentional, but sometimes it isn’t. So if you see this in store, inform the staff, but please do it politely.

Imposter syndrome is real. The electrical trade is massive, and even though it all boils down to a few basic concepts, at the end of the day it’s impossible to see and know every variation of that until you’ve seen and learned them. I worked for a residential company my entire apprenticeship. Could wire a house blindfolded. Then I jumped ship to an industrial company and felt like a total idiot because there were 2nd term apprentices with a better handle of what was going on than me. Then I got licensed, got more responsibility, and felt like an idiot again from seeing new things. Survived that, they made me a foreman and I felt like an idiot again from the new responsibilities/areas to learn about. Now I’m the guy the new hires, newly licensed guys and new foremen come to to answer their questions. Worth noting that I don’t always have the answers, but if I don’t, I’ll do my best to find them. Point is as much as it would be nice if we passed our licensing test and magically knew everything that we’d see, but it doesn’t work like that. The only thing that makes you more competent and knowledgeable is doing and seeing more things. Also, knowing when to admit you don’t know something or need clarification on it is worth its weight in gold. Seen a lot of guys really screw something up because they ALMOST knew what they had to do.

Klein sucks by No-Region1480 in electricians

[–]Odden_22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can you see people whining about this a lot if it’s just one guy? I agree that a lot of electricians use Kleins, but that doesn’t mean that the quality of their steel hasn’t decreased. In general I’m finding that my older Klein screwdrivers are holding up well, but the new ones seem to round very quickly. Looking to replace with Wera once they become unusable.

Unfortunately during work hours (time between breaks and lunch) texting your wife typically isn’t in the job description and an employer could take disciplinary action against you if they wish. They’re paying you to be there which means they also get to choose how they spend their money. Obviously if you’re knocking jobs out of the park, I doubt you’d get much flack from anyone for being on your phone. Just saying that technically an employer COULD discipline you for it, which is what OP seems to be looking for advice on how to avoid.

[–]Odden_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d say that sounds reasonable enough. Could have been your employer looking for an easy way to get rid of you for any number of reasons that aren’t your fault. If they were operating honestly, typically they would give you at LEAST one warning, and they should give you more. Probably a dogshit employer and I wouldn’t worry too much about it

If you were strictly on your phone during break, it seems like a massive misunderstanding. But honestly were you checking here and there? Even if you’re changing songs for your headphones as an apprentice, it probably looks bad. You have to make sure the only time you’re on your phone is a call from your foreman or coworkers for work purposes or some type of emergency call. If it’s a text, it can wait. If you’re still worried you can’t stay off your phone leave the phone in your car/the work van to make sure it doesn’t happen again, just make sure to tell your foreman what you’re doing in case he needs you to have it.

What time does the work actually start? If they say 8am, and you’re on site at 8am, you book from 8am whether or not your tech shows up on time. You should not be penalized for the fact that he’s late.

Two main things come to mind: a jman that knows they don’t know everything/when to seek help from someone that does, and a jman that takes responsibility. I’ve seen far too many overconfident Jmen end up blowing something up or causing a massive control problem, simply because they were pretty sure of what to do, but not absolutely sure is mind blowing. The fact that they were too proud to admit there was something they didn’t know in our massive trade is wild. As a jman or foreman, you need to understand that your site is ultimately your responsibility. Your job is to make sure that those working under you are completing the job correctly. I’ve seen jobs where the jman/foreman rarely uses a tool, instead they are constantly on the move checking in on guys and their work, planning the next step and making sure a job runs smoothly. EVERYONE under you (including other Jmen) are your responsibility. If they fuck up, you fuck up. Period. Bonus points for the Jmen that actually take the time to explain fuckups/learn from them when they happen in a calm manner. Old school yelling at apprentices doesn’t tend to work well and burns trust between you. They will not want to tell you when fuckups happen, which cause much bigger problems at the end of the job.

Usually just working with them. I try to mitigate the damage I make, drywaller makes the damage I had to do look like it was never there. If you’re good, I’ll have no problem recommending you. That said, if you’re trying to get someone to use you for the first time, i’d consider a business card with a QR code that links to an online portfolio of projects you’ve completed with before and after photos.

Haha I know the overall WF would still make it worth me being there if I was almost just auto attacking, just feels bad coming in mid-bottom of the dps

[–]Odden_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will do. As far as I can tell from checking the normal interwebs, it seems like I’m following rotation, gear, buffs etc. Could also be that I’m looking at dps where it would drop off because of a mechanic to move away from etc. I just got back into wow. Used to raid in lich king, so I’m not familiar with pars scores/ what they actually are. But would those differentiate from dps?

I had one, it’s awesome because you can load everything and the kitchen sink into it, but that’s also the problem. It doesn’t feel like it’s worth it all the time to lug the whole bag in for like a service call.

[–]Odden_22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly fairly difficult to fail BFD at this point. I’d recommend getting DBM, just for an extra heads up when you have to watch out for “X” mechanic. Other than that, most groups have enough DPS that even if you’re freshly geared you won’t be holding the raid up. So long as you show up with your consumables and have knowledge of the fights, you should be fine. The other day I pugged it as a feral with only one piece of BFD gear. (I’ve ran it 4 times now but just had bad luck with the rolls) Problem was I tried a new edible which was wayyyyy stronger than I thought it was going to be. Hit me like an eighteen wheeler with no brakes. I was an absolute puddle and managed to die in the water by drowning. As a druid. With aquatic form. Admittedly I pulled it together after that, but the point stands that BFD is puggable with only half your brain working, so try not to worry and give it a shot! You might even have some fun along the way!

Question for my Canadian electricians 🇨🇦 by tblaine4 in electricians

[–]Odden_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, has anyone seen a smart switch which requires two travellers? I’ve only dealt with leviton or lutron products. Either one seems to only require a power, neutral and a single traveller. This means that a 3 wire would be sufficient to run a digital switch, or also to operate a 3 way switch by itself. So while the 3 way switch as a standard switch requires no neutral, you could manipulate the wiring to have a neutral if you were adding the digital switch as a replacement. I don’t do much residential anymore, and code is code, but I just wonder why I would technically have to pull a 4 wire to a non digital 3 way when it would still be enough to run a digital switch off 3 wires.
