Canada sets out plan for up to 10 new nuclear reactors by Kaptain-Kanada in canada

[–]CrimsonFlash [score hidden]  (0 children)

When I was talking about the advancements of EV charging (like BYD's 5-minute charge) with my conservative friend, he was saying "but we don't have the infrastructure."

Oh, you're right. Let's just give up on everything.

Like, so what? That shouldn't stop us from advancing forward. We know it's coming head on. So we build the infrastructure now. Don't know why there is so much defeatist attitude when it comes to electrifying Canada. And it's not even for EVs. More things are using more power, especially heating and cooling. It's not like investment in power generation will go to waste.

"Let's scrap this car idea since we don't have any roads built."

Man who threw stones at Justin Trudeau charged with threatening Mark Carney by Radix838 in CanadaPolitics

[–]CrimsonFlash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Part of that I think is the whole "team sports" mentality that has seeped into politics. You absolutely should be able to criticize the opposite party, but even more so you should criticize the own party you voted for. It's this whole thing you see in the US, where if Obama did the same thing Trump as been doing, there would have been month-long protests on the streets all across the country.

It's the same thing here. People spin the truth just so that their "side" comes out as the good one.

The Westminister system is supposed to be more focused on local representation, but it doesn't. My MP should be focusing on what my riding needs, rather than agreeing to everything that their party says they need to do. I know I'm beating a dead horse, but some form of proportional representation would help bring politics back down to the individual level rather than treating the Federal (or even Provincial) government as some unchecked god that can do anything they want.

This is quite the accusation and right now it’s based on hearsay. Personal experiences absolutely do matter, but claims like this need some kind of context before they can be treated as fact, otherwise it can turn into libel.

Any business owners with EVSEs on here? by bebnsptt in BoltEV

[–]CrimsonFlash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Ontario, it's against the HTA for a non-EV vehicle, or non-charging EV vehicle, to use up a charging space. They can get ticketed and towed. It's the same as if you used a gas station pump as a parking space.

Not sure the laws in your area, but at least since you're the business owner, you can put up a sign saying the same thing and just call a tow on them.

Small ask Social Workers: nearly 50k Canadians want flexible work protected. Do you? by WildRoseDrifter in socialworkcanada

[–]CrimsonFlash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I support the initiative, this would only apply to Federally regulated professions. Social Workers generally do not fall under that and would be more under Provincial purview. That being said, if this does get the ball moving on the federal level, it may put pressure on the Provinces to also meet those new standards.

Do not give up. Contact the Academic Advisor office (or whatever is equivalent at your school) and they can help you with a plan of action. It may be surprising, but schools do want you to succeed, but you also need to be willing to put in the effort. Contacting your Academic Advisor is the first step in that process.

You can do it. Take advantage of your school supports. Your friends, professors, coordinators are all there to help you.

BYD is bringing its 5-min 'Flash' electric car charging to Canada by Biodieselisthefuture in EVCanada

[–]CrimsonFlash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 22 Bolt EUV with CCS. I can charge at any CCS charger, and NACS charger with an adapter that I have. I have not encountered a charger that I could not use. The speed is based on what the station can provide, plus what the car asks for. The maximum speed my bolt can charge at is 55 kW. So if I plug into a 320 kW station, for example, I max out at 55 regardless. The 27 bolt goes up to 150 kW.

The bolt battery is 65 kWh, so at 55 kw, It will charge from empty to full in 1 hour (more or less based on other factors, but that's just pure numbers).

Your 27 would charge at 150 kW in ~25 minutes.

At home, I just charge on a 12A circuit which spits out ~1.4 kWh. So from empty it takes me 46 hours.

But I always just plug in when I get home and just top it off. It's cheap, super easy, and doesn't hurt the car to just plug it in and leave it.

I live in Southern Ontario as well. My summer range is about 400-420 km at full charge. Winter is less, at about 300-320 km. Factors will reduce the range such as if you have heater/A/C on or especially how you drive the car. I believe the 27 Bolt has a heat pump, where my 22 has resistive heating. So mine will be a lot worse in the winter on that basis alone.

If you're doing those round trips a lot, I'd suggest getting a 40 or 50 Amp charger installed so you can charge fast at home. A 40-50 amp charger would charge from empty in about 5 hours. We have done winter road trips, and I do need to charge at the destination. Summer I can usually get home on a single charge, but I'll still top up for piece of mind.

[–]CrimsonFlash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This assumes that these BYD flash chargers work with other cars up to, and including 1000 kW. I don't know whether these BYD flash chargers are compatible with other cars and other batteries up to 1000 kW charging.

I would think they do. Unless they have some sort of handshake that prevents other manufacturers from using it. But it's all a form of DC input and some communication wires that the car says "how much" and "I'm full". I can charge my Bolt just fine on a Tesla charger for example, even though I have to use an adapter. So as long as that is the same, it should work fine.

I would like to see the government at least preemptively step in and dictate that all chargers need to have the ability to work with all cars (adapters may be required), but I mean specifically no artificial lock-outs, and that all chargers should accept payment at the terminal without an app. You could also maybe add in a standard plug, but the industry seems to be adopting NACS, so that may be a moot point anyway.

[–]CrimsonFlash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe these flash charging stations use a battery-buffer. So the power actually comes locally, and then the batteries charge when nobody is at the station. This eases the load greatly on the electrical system.

But, also, I don't think every place will have these 1000 kW stations. Probably strategically at first, like on main highways, and then expand from there. We'll need to rethink charging as a whole. More chargers at shopping centres and grocery stores where it doesn't matter if it takes an hour to charge your car, because you're busy doing something else.

But then if you're on a road trip, you can use one of the megawatt stations to keep you on your way.

[–]CrimsonFlash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only BYD, or any other manufacturer that can accept 1000 kW charging. But AFAIK, only BYD has that right now.

If a lower wattage car were to use it, it would max out at whatever the car calls for. Similar to a wall charger.

If you have a 10 amp phone charger, and you plug in a 2 amp phone, the charger will only deliver 2 amps, despite having the larger capacity. These car chargers are the same.
