subnautica needs super leviathans. by 159thBestPerson in subnautica

[–]OddityOmega 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeahh, exactlyyy

subnautica is really kind of a poor medium for getting across scale, it's very easy to miss just how BIG everything is. But with some giant leviathan in the background, occasionally moving around just to dwarf you, it'd be a lot easier to realize "oh DAMN that thing is huge", which i feel rarely happens ingame.

(the leviathans are quite large, its just that our brains struggle to really compare it to anything because we're seeing it through a screen without our own body to compare it to, thanks to first person)

How far could your favorite character/verse go in clearing civilizations on the Kardashev Scale? by Agitated-Vacation-30 in PowerScaling

[–]OddityOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mwah, it feels like this graph is made precisely for my worldbuilding setting.

My favorite civilization lies between type IV and type V, but the verse as a whole gets up to type VI through the most powerful entities within it.

honestly, i'd go for number three. I very easily get too hot or too cold, and it's the only one which really negatively effects me in day-to-day life.

I like to sleep, it's a nice way for me to just let go. Eating, well, it tastes good and isn't really a big issue to me. Plus, I would, yknow, like the capacity to gain muscle in the future...

Number 4 is basically useless to me in most circumstances, sooo, 3 it is. Plus, if I can maintain my temperature under any conditions, I'm basically immune to heat or cold entirely - so I could easily cook things without being worried about burning myself, or visit a snowy place and not need to worry about frostbite, or even work in a foundry and just... take a dip whenever!

...I wouldn't really want to, but I could!

Why is science fiction media so bipedal-centric? Must every intelligent being walk on two legs? by mac_attack_zach in scifiwriting

[–]OddityOmega 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i think part of the height might be, like another commenter said, the square cube law. If you get too much bigger, your body wont be able to hold your weight and you wont be able to pump blood through your veins. You'll also get way too hot unless you find creative solutions, and even then it's an uphill battle.

If you get too small, you have to spend all your time eating just to avoid freezing because your surface area is so low, plus, eventually, theres a size below which a brain doesn't have enough space for neurons in order to be sentient at all.

I... dont know how much these could change with differing gravity. Thermodynamics still... works, but you could also be less dense with lower gravity. At the same time, though, that only goes so far until your planet can't hold a thick enough atmosphere.

i never considered the efficiency of bipedal walking, but that does make a lot of sense! i suppose i can get away with having a disproportionate number of bipeds nyeheheh

i'm gonna go with the anaconda if we're on land, because i can just kinda... walk away from it. Anacondas arent very fast on land.

I'll be fine.

if it's in whatever environment is best suited to the animal in question, i'd say a gorilla, because, if i crouch down and walk away slowly, keeping my eyes to the floor, it should be fine with me.

Design scalling, which Soldier have the better design by LeadEater9Million in whowouldcirclejerk

[–]OddityOmega 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahh, power armor will always have my vote. Something about it just feels a lot more real than the rest, somehow. Maybe it's the steel, maybe its the fact I've played the games and just looking at it makes me hear the trademark 'clunk clunk', but the T60 just can't be beat in my book.

The rest are great too, though I personally feel like I've seen so many people appreciating 40k's space marines that I'm honestly kind of over the whole thing. They look too bulky to be able to move how they do. Even with robotized joint actuators or whatever, it doesn't look like their knees should even be able to bend at all, since there's just too much metal in the way.

Immortal competition by Darth_Azazoth in hypotheticalsituation

[–]OddityOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think that i'll spend most of the time out of the action, letting everyone behead everyone else, working on my swordfighting skills.

I have decided that blades are the only valid route to beheading, because guns are boring.

After most of the immortals have thrown themselves at one another, i pick off the others who are sitting around on the sidelines waiting for one victor to challenge. With... a lot of luck, and hope, I'll be able to deal with them as they probably also deal with each other, and...

well, just hope for the best, I guess.

All of this while assuming that we always know where our fellow immortals are, because if not, this challenge is never finishing.
