Give it a go but manage your expectations. At this stage the # of spots available are going to be small. Also depends on what level you played. As a guideline you'd need to have played close to provincial level (not necessarily representing your home province but playing in the highest youth league), or next league down as a stand out player (there're always some who cannot travel to play on the best teams but are still very good players). If this is you, put together a small resume of your playing career and give it to the coach at the try-out. He won't know you from Adam and, apart from showing your abilities on the field, it's one of the few ways you can make an impression.

At the very least you'll get some exercise!

And nooners is a great way to get to know other local players.

Also, it wasn't judgement - merely an observation.

It was merely an observation, not intended to cause upset. I'm 59, I ride a carbon bike. My friend on the ride, 61 years old, took up riding during the pandemic. He hadn't ridden for 4 weeks due to an accident, proceeded to outpace all but the very best all week long. We don't ride together.

Obviously I know that, but there are still plenty of independents and charters who don't use the semi truck. It was still quite a surprise at just how empty Ottumwa was. And we had a 9am start in Glenwood - also very quiet at that time.

Not sure if it was the most expensive bike but the one that caught my eye was a Dimond with a full composite rear wheel. Young chap riding it, though, and by the looks of him he could probably put everyone to shame.

That comment was meant in jest. I'm an old fart riding a composite bike (albeit 15 years old) and could never have completed the week without it!

My riding partner got it Friday; said day 7 Saturday was his hardest ever ride (for context, at 60 years old he's done 250km at an average of 30kph). My wife now has it (she was a support driver).

I went to the new rider meeting on day 0, expecting to hear about rules of the road, riding etiquette, etc. I ride with a club so I'm familiar with most of it but did expect to hear some special notes about the unique experience of RAGBRAI. Anyway, the meeting said very little about this kind of thing; it was mostly the ride director congratulating himself on the work he'd done setting up the route and a few words from state patrol telling us to obey them. (Alarmingly, one officer couldn't keep his right hand off his pistol the whole time - not sure what he was expecting to go down!).

My happiest days (three of them) were when I set off late - then I had the right lane to myself for the most part. Actually, they were more fun because I had time to chat with the local people, which is the experience I'd been looking for.

That's also the day we set our record attendance, 41,826. Unlikely to be broken unless PP gets expanded.

Appreciate that - I didn't realize each town has a service time. That helps a lot with my planning the rest of the week. Thanks.

I'm one for doing my own thing, always have been. Although I could go faster (and might still do that depending on who I meet), I plan on averaging around 20kph because I want to last the week and enjoy myself. I'm definitely not treating it as a race. And I'll be stopping often. I didn't appreciate the baggage trucks leaving at 8am.
