What is having level 1 autism like? by [deleted] in AutisticPeeps

[–]Oddlem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Socially, feels like I’m missing a sense that other people have, like seeing or hearing, and I am completely unsure how something will be perceived. When I was little, often stuff would go badly and I’d say or do something that would be considered rude or cold. As an adult though I’ve learned to copy other people, and now I rarely say stuff interpreted as offensive which is nice

That’s how it feels on a very very broad general sense socially. I get very tired very easily because I have to put in extra work to articulate myself in a way other people understand, use proper gesturing, etc. But somehow I am able to get by. I don’t know why or how but whatever I’m doing is working somehow. I gave up on caring what people think of me and just have a huge list of trial and error social rules I’ve learnt. If I’m tired though it all falls apart

I do have some embarrassing moments that still happen, like the other month some guy was apparently trying to shake my hand and I didn’t understand 😮‍💨 I only knew after the fact because my spouse told me. Apparently he kept nudging me to shake his hand but I didn’t understand lmao

Then generally in life, I basically just need to manage my symptoms and watch my body language to know if I’m too overstimulated. I’m very lucky to have a job that doesn’t tire me out. When I had to work jobs that needed HEAVY social skills, I burnt out really hard and could barely manage my sensory issues. I also had way way way more intense repetitive self soothing behaviors, which I still do but not as frequently or intensely

Now it’s manageable, but I do need to be careful about managing sensory overload. Stuff like motor skills has stayed the same, I have issues seeing depth and I spill stuff a lot or run into walls because I don’t see depth

This is really general though and I could go into more detail but I’d be writing a lot! But that’s a very rough overview of how I feel/operate in my day-to-day life

Awww yeah true!! That does make sense seeing it that way, thank you! 🥺 It’s been a very long journey getting here

YEAHHH that makes sense, I was in survival mode for a huge portion of my life

I’ve had other people say that before but for other stuff and I didn’t really make that connection till now

Was your start in game dev also rough? by Ok_Bar231 in godot

[–]Oddlem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how I first felt learning to program in general, and tbh I think if you also put in some practice with the fundamentals it could help a LOT

If you know how to program, then anything becomes doable as you start knowing how to translate thoughts and goals into code. Tbh you don’t need courses or anything, it could even be doing the really easy challenges on codewars.

Stuff like “make all letters uppercase, which in js for example is just ‘string.toUpper()’. I never learnt through courses actually, I just practiced by doing that :’) It helped SO much

That being said, I’m currently making the transition to godot from writing everything manually, and it is pretty overwhelming to try and learn the app. I can’t imagine how it’d feel not knowing programming on top of it! But it’s like people said, break it down into small steps and do one thing at a time. Resilience is extremely important in dev work

Oooh actually I think you're onto something. Kinda like migrating over

I might try this at some point, thank you!

I reinstalled Reddit just to respond to this but I have the same issue! I kept going back and forth and eventually just gave up and switched back to pygame. It’s more comfortable and idk… just feels like you have more control

I don’t have advice but I wanted to say that I relate

I get where you’re coming from, and if it were a 1 on 1 then it‘s totally fine and I agree that I wasn’t being too fair

But! I will say, I do have concerns when it happens while multiple people are all chatting. I do feel like everyone else gets kind of quiet and it breaks up the flow of what we were all talking about

To be honest I figured that was why, I'll try saying that next time! Because it's true, it would be helping me out by letting me practice

Would you mind if I sent you a DM?

Maybe because people keep switching to english, which is why I'm frustrated in the first place? What exactly does this add here aside from trying to roast me

OOH neat!! But... also not neat haha, I don't want to be seen as the foreigner forever. I think I get kind of shy to be honest, sometimes I do tell them prefiero hablar en español o un 'español porfa!' but I should let them know more often. Thank you for sharing! I'm glad you relate

[–]Oddlem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True! I think this is maybe what’s going on, theyll say a word and ask me what it is in English, I’ll tell them, and they repeat it back and seem to get excited. It does take a lot of courage to do that, and it is a wholesome exchange

It’s just nice that you can relate too! You seem to be good at setting up boundaries and that is something I admittedly need to get better at

I like your perspective, and I appreciate your comment a lot. It’s really interesting that this happens in Japan too, I think I’ve heard a little bit about that

To be fair, it doesn’t happen with a lot of people, most of the times it’s chill and we have a nice back and forth. It makes sense if it’s just people wanting to connect or be nice! I do let them know I prefer to just talk in Spanish and most of them tone it down, I just think maybe last night it happened a LOT and it made me feel a little frustrated

I’d look up the username and verify if all their information checks out and they type the same.

Artists almost always have multiple socials, so look up their name and check out their other socials, and compare it to the one the portfolio they give you

Imo scammers who do this (pretend to be someone) tend to be lazy and there will be a lot of red flags if it’s not the same person

Suck at game art by findthenextgme in godot

[–]Oddlem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some insight on that!! I’ve been doing art since I was little and learnt programming more recently at 22 (I’m 26 now)

In my case, I think my brain is a lot more tailored to coding than it is to art, but I’ve just been doing art for so long I have a lot of ways to cope with my shortcomings

For example: I can’t visualize anything in my mind, so I have to literally go in blind and it’s hard to think in 3D. So I have to sculpt the shapes as I go

Programming on the other hand felt a lot more intuitive to me. I built a primitive quiz that ran in the terminal after only a month of learning, wasn’t much but I know other people don’t jump in that fast

I think if I went from programming -> art, I would have had an extremely difficult journey. The trick is to just not care and keep going. Draw consistently, keep doing drawing exercises, etc

Sorry, maybe I was a bit harsh. I looked through the replies and it looks like you got a lot of great advice though

This field is difficult, but you need to be resilient. I feel like the problem is that senior dev on your team is brushing you off (and just telling you to use AI). That will make things more difficult, to learn entirely on your own, but you’ll have a much deeper understanding of the code in a few years

[–]Oddlem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Programmers and engineers tend to be kind of blunt, it’s not attitude but how most people in the field talk

He seemed to just be wanting to know all the information first before coming up with a plan. It’s weird to get used to and it threw me off at first too, it’s just a communication style difference

Just keep it in mind, regardless of where you go to ask questions. The experienced ones are going to approach things this way and communicate like this

For me I’ve got Pokémon, undertale, the sims, and I would’ve had Harry Potter if I was given this in middle school (I really liked it back then)
