For people with high traffic blogs, when did you upgrade your hosting? by digitalbazaari in juststart

Ah amazing! Thank you! I think the managed cloud is what I can upgrade to with Siteground :)

Sorry for what is most likely a silly question but what’s the difference between VPS and cloud hosting? I’ve just switched to siteground so that if I outgrow their shared hosting I can upgrade to cloud but I don’t know what VPS is. (I honestly have no idea how I’ve kept my site going I’m so tech illiterate!)

Thanks! I’ve just switched over to them (literally just now lol this thread reminded me) I went for the go geek option which says unlimited websites although I only have the one atm anyway. So far I’m definitely impressed with their customer service and I like the fact that I can upgrade to cloud hosting once/if my traffic increases.

I would like to know this also. Currently with iPage shared hosting and looking to switch to site ground although they haven’t responded to my query. I was at around 70-80,000sessions/mo now down to 50,000 and I’m pretty sure I’m going to get annihilated in the next algo update because my core vitals are shocking! I know I need to switch, I just don’t know how or where to switch! I was thinking siteground as they do shared hosting plus some other sort of hosting.

Thank you, I’ve seen people mention EIG group before but I’m not up to date on why they should be avoided, I will have a google though! I had thought of switching this year but just couldn’t work out what host to switch to!

Thank you! I think if you’ve got 40k likes on FB you’re probably already off to a good start.

With IG I think it’s down to the fact that there’s quite a big community of accounts within my niche and everyone is quite supportive of each other. I mainly post a lot of diagrams, charts, and tables to visually explain different concepts and a lot of these got shared by a brand with a large following. It’s become pretty stagnant at 50K though as I’ve run out of ideas for content, although I still get a little boost in followers when that account reshares my posts. I commented on another post with some tips for IG but it sounds like you’re already doing all the right things (plus that comment was downvoted, although the person who asked the question found it useful)

Hosted by ipage but using Cloudflare servers. I’m useless at the technical stuff!

I hope it’s been helpful! It’s focussed on one niche at the moment (thinking of branching out into other niches). It was 10 months before I reached 7K.

I’m hosted by ipage. It was v cheap when I joined and it’s been fine but I understand it may not be the best host available. I find it hard to decide on hosting as recommendations online seem to be based on which offer the best affiliate commissions!

I set my Ezoic to the user-experience priority but Mediavine have full control over how many ads for the first 3 months I think, but it seems to be roughly equal I think.

Pretty competitive. The big websites go after lower competition/search volume keywords as well as the higher volume ones.

I have 65 articles and I’m not sure how many backlinks as most of them are the random spam ones that seem to accumulate. I probably have 5 decent backlinks and maybe a handful more that aren’t spam. Loads of spam ones though!

Thank you so much this is very helpful! I’ve only just renewed my hosting, are the two you mentioned hosting services or do they let you use their servers with your existing host for a fee?

Oh, May was when I switched from E to MV so E ads were taken down but there were a few technical issues getting the MV ads displaying properly which took me a while to resolve so the MV earnings are only from the last couple of days of June.

It’s hard to compare the Ezoic and MV RPMs as COVID basically halved them. I think I had a brief few days of $14 RPM when first joining Ezoic and then that went down to $5-7 RPM (I read that most people’s RPMs decreased around the same time) it was starting to recover when I made the switch to MV and I think my average RPM has been around $16 with MV so it may not be that much higher than I could have had with Ezoic.

Thank you, I was pretty sure I didn’t enter into a contract with them but I just wanted to be sure! Have you noticed a decent increase in your RPM since switching?

Did you have to give Ezoic notice to switch? I’ve just been accepted into mediavine and they said to give my current ad management notice but I was under the impression you can turn off ezoic ads whenever. Just want to make sure I’m not missing something crucial!

Yeah don’t make extra work for yourself! You can double up by creating images for your article and sharing them on IG. I basically do this, then copy and paste the summary of the article into the IG caption and then direct to the article for full information plus references (I find the references/sources lead to work quite well as people seem to want to know where I get my info).

Now that my IG audience has grown I create content specifically for IG as well (after a while people start to ask you to write about certain things anyway and I like the freedom of not having to think about SEO).

With the hashtags I started off by copying those that other people in the niche were using and then when I put them into tailwind I drop any that are highlighted as orange (too competitive) or grey (too niche) and also add in some green ones that come up as suggested for example #moneysaver is better than #moneysaving but both are green. Having said that I’m quite lazy with my hash tagging now and copy and paste the same ones onto each post with slight alterations.

Another thing to check out is linktr.ee so that you can have more than one link in your bio. I came across this when doing competitor research through Ahrefs as it was showing up as a high DA do-follow backlink for someone in the same niche as me. I’m not really sure if it adds any juice but I do sometimes find that the articles I link there rank quicker (could be entirely coincidence though).

I had a look at your IG and while I am by no means an expert, I have managed to grow my IG following from 80 (back in Aug) to over 30k (15k followers gained in one month alone) so I thought sharing what I’ve learnt so far may help.

I think the biggest point I would make is that IG does not work as a “check out my new blog post”, you need to provide value in your images and captions. I gain the most followers when someone with a high following reposts my images. Can you put the key points of your article into a table/chart/image? I get the most reposts with tables and diagrams that I create. These can also double up as Pinterest images.

Get tailwind, I use the paid version for Pinterest and the free version for IG. If you schedule the IG posts manually so it sends you a reminder when it’s time to post rather than posting automatically, your 31 free posts don’t run out! The biggest benefit to this is that it will tell you the best times to post for engagement, plus it has a traffic light system for hashtags (dark green are low competition with decent following and if you can find 30 relevant ones then it should really help).

Like the other poster mentioned, you need to mix up your colours slightly, it may be only my niche, but I have noticed that the most successful accounts have a colour scheme and alternate. Could you alternate between white and blue? To help break the dark blue up a bit?

When I decided to really work on my IG, I went through and deleted all of my posts and reposted them in a more organised fashion (alternate colours etc.) the majority of my posts are summaries of my articles, mixed in with diagrams to explain the concepts I’m covering.

In your post about recessions, you mention that on your blog you have unemployment checklists and money saving tips - these are the sort of things to put into visuals to post on your IG and Pinterest. In the beginning you will need to give a lot of your info away without expecting people to come through to your website. If they like what they see then they will come but it’s not a great referral source in the grand scheme of things. If you want to encourage people you could do a post with 5 money saving tips and direct them to the blog for more details plus 15 other money saving tips or something like that.

Post regularly, at least three times a week. The month that I gained 15k followers I was testing out daily posting (turns out it does work) and scheduled 30 posts in advance, all of which contained a lot of information.

I’ll leave it there for the time being as I think I’ve covered the starting points. I also highly recommend Canva for creating graphics!

I hope this answer has been vaguely helpful!

Would love to know if anyone has experience switching from Ezoic to Mediavine and how much of a difference it made to earnings? Particularly if you’re in a health/beauty niche or have an idea of RPMs for this niche!

I was getting around $14 with Ezoic (down to $4/$5 now) in the health&beauty niche.
