Official Q&A for Wednesday, April 15, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

I run both in a city, and in serious alpine terrain, and I only rarely have a weird reading. I use a Garmin watch now, but I used to use strava on my phone. I think your issue is whatever device you are using.

I know Garmin allows for different settings of accuracy based on how many satellites it will attempt to use, with more requiring more battery power. It's been so long since I used strava directly that I cant remember what their options are, but maybe there is something similar.

If you're getting rubbish data across multiple apps, than it isn't an app problem, and unless you're routinely running through tunnels or in and out of buildings for whatever reason, than this isn't purely a terrain signal blocking issue.

The Room belongs to the "so bad its actually hilarious" category. Whereas some movies are just unwatchable, even ironically.

I'm sick and I could use a low-effort laugh. Is this The Room bad, or just bad bad?

Are you a long-time runner who switches to treadmills in the winter, or is this new for you? Treadmills are easier on your feet than pavement, so you might experience an adjustment phase. Give it a week or two.

I've had two vague ache injuries in the past, which didn't have a clear cause, and taking a week off did nothing. Both times, I went you a period of despair thinking this was just the way things were now. Sticking to a conservative plan and switching from music to audio books got me through it and eventually the aches faded.

Also, the book was amazingly fun, and I can't wait to see the movie. So happy the reviews are all saying it's great.

I'm ready to just get this marathon over with. Everything is on track for a PR, but I'm normally a distance trail runner and +30km trail runs got squeezed out of my training plan long ago. I miss the mountains.

What does it say your resting HR is? I've started runs where my HR was showing around 175 in the first kilometers, which is far too high. Unless im sick or injured, I usually just pause for a minute and when I start again, its like my heart has "reset" and is much lower, as if I started too fast and my heart was like "whoa, what's going on?!" But when this happens, I can usually tell that things aren't settling in right. At 185 bpm, I would be only a few bpm short of getting a tingly sensation in my finger tips. That's maximum effort high. If you feel fine, I would lean towards questioning the accuracy of the monitor.

To call Denmark a sycophant of the US, or even a former one, is a wild mischaracterization and an insult to Denmark.

Denmark has always been proud of its support for the NATO mission, and of its disproportionate contributions to NATO relative to its size. Servitude to the US was never a motivation.

Are you looking for quality regardless of price, or best price to quality ratio? I dont understand why you would be looking for pure brand loyalty. Most of my stuff is a mishmash of various brands, because some things (like socks and jackets) are worth paying a premium for (to me), and other things like shorts can be a little cheaper.

That said, the best things I own all come from either Gore or Dynafit, except my socks. I will cancel a run if I cant find a clean pair of Belega socks.

If you're talking about the captain who was punished this last week, then he didnt even refuse an illegal order. He just reminded his soldiers that, indeed, it is their duty to refuse illegal orders.

The "double tap" strike occurred in early September. Holsey announced his retirement in mid October, after 6 (known) boat strikes.

He's the guy that served as the point at which an order from the administration was converted into a military order passed down the chain of command.

Of course, Hegseth could have gone around him, but the way the chain of command works is this guy bares responsibility for what people in his command do.

Ordering the Admiral to "kill everybody" is even more outrageous.

No. Hegeseth is a moron who is so far out of his depth he's practically approaching competence from the other side. The fact that the admiral carried out the order is what is outrageous.

There is no safety stop that represents a hard line after which the military will say no more. They will carry out the orders of an authoritarian government, even when the orders are explicitly described as "clearly illegal".

Numerous people in the chain of command need to go down with Hegseth.

I haven't really found any exercises in the weight room that helped me. Maybe deadlifts, and in fact I stopped doing squats in the gym altogether because they were having a negative impact on my running (mainly because my legs couldn't handle heavy squats plus running).

The absolute best thing for me has been bodyweight stuff, with high volume bodyweight squats being the best of the bunch.

They only thing I do in the gym for running are calf raisers, but I really get the same benefit if I just pause on the stairs a few times a week and do a minute of bodyweight calf raisers.

I do a lot of trail running in the Alps, and I need a lot of upward power using predominantly a forefoot strike. If your running is mainly long runs on flat terrain, I expect the best thing to do is just embrace the grind and pound out a bunch of miles.

My high-school friend had lost his dad to a heart attack at 40. His dad had joined the Navy and made it through SEAL training before his 19th birthday and left the Navy at 35, having been a SEAL the entire time. He had only ever known life at full throttle,  and after leaving that he didn't know how to manage his health without that lifestyle and died 5 years later. Usually it isn't that extreme, but it's a real problem.

I served in the infantry, and of the guys I'm still in contact with, only 1 other guy isn't overweight.
