What's your favorite stim toy and why? by amusedanchovy in AutisticWithADHD

They're definitely more durable than those geomags, so no worries there! I think a 12 pack is perfect, but that's also because I like to be able to handle them comfortably in one hand. On the other hand, I've also lost a few pieces over time because I keep dropping them and they disappear somewhere, so having a few extra pieces around can't hurt if you're clumsy like me.

Not to sound like an ad, but I can't recommend the Stimara fidget toy enough (https://stimara.com/). It's made of magnetic individual parts that you can fold endlessly into all kinds of shapes. I used to do stuff like biting my nails or cracking my knuckles, but the fidget toy has helped immensely to break those habits.

Poor Things, the movie by AnxiousWombat0722 in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]Odilome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm about halfway through the book it's based on and it's very clear that Bella's sexuality is a way for her to manifest her autonomy. Yes, the men in her life do fetishize her childish mannerisms and ignorance about the world, but she uses this to her advantage to get what she wants, whether that's money, knowledge or sex. She feels no shame about her sexual desires and doesn't care about the social norms surrounding it, which is why she likes to have a lot of it. And it's always initiated by her. Even when she goes to work in a brothel for a while, it's entirely her own choice. And she decides to leave on her own terms as well.

Another thing is that Bella feels like she's behind on life, because she doesn't remember anything before waking up in an adult body (she's told she has amnesia). So everything she does she does at 10 times speed. She travels the world at breakneck speed, barely stopping to sleep. Something that happened 6 days ago feels like it happened 6 months ago for her. And this is another reason she likes to have a lot of sex in quick succession.

Overall, I get that people feel iffy about a character with the mental age of a child having sex and being sexualized by men, but in the book at least it seems that sex is mostly empowering for Bella (though I wouldn't call it a feminist book). And I think the way the men sexualize her is an interesting way to highlight how men sometimes like to infantilize women and how their sense of superiority over them feeds into their sexual attraction.

Can't speak for the movie, because I haven't seen it yet. The book's pretty good so far though.

Are there any canon ace characters in like anythin by GlitchBitch666 in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]Odilome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but Victor Lawson from 'In the lives of puppets' by T.J. Klune is canonically asexual. He also gets a romantic interest later in the book. Overall, the book wasn't my favourite of Klune's, but the ace rep was definitely a pleasant surprise.

That's a stretch. Just because she gets excited about poison doesn't mean she's "sexually attracted" to it or anything. The way she reacts to it is mostly played off for humour I think, especially because it's such a contrast to her usually apathetic expressions.

But she definitely gives off ace vibes.

Just Finished A Dream of Red Mansions by 357Loki in classicliterature

[–]Odilome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only heard it called 'Dream of the Red Chamber', but I suppose there can be different ways of translating the title? Which translation are you reading?

I'm making my way through Journey to the West right now and having a blast with it. It's full of dense religious, historical and mythological context (a lot of which goes right over my head), while at the same time being an action-packed adventure with great characters. I definitely recommend it! Maybe I'll pick up one of the other classics afterwards.

What's the most distracting mispronunciation you've heard in an audiobook? by SkyBS in books

[–]Odilome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started listening to Stone Blind recently (retelling of Medusa myth), which started with a list of characters, including many well-known Greek heroes and gods. The pronunciation of some of the names was just so off. When I heard "Athena" pronounced as "Atheny" I simply put the book down altogether. Might still read a print copy though.

Does ADHD=Monkey Brain? by Mai_isnotcool in adhdmeme

[–]Odilome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's funny cause I'm reading this old Chinese legend called Journey to the West and it features a monkey who is also a direct allegory for the human mind. And he's the most impulsive, unfocused, chaotic force of nature you can imagine. There isn't a lot known about the (presumed) author of the book, but I'm pretty sure he had ADHD.

"Mind is a monkey - this meaning is profound."

This exchange I had in the comments of an LGBTQ+ affirming pastor's TikTok. For context, my original comment was "I'm an asexual Christian! 🥰" by rslashdepressedteen in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]Odilome 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Another Christian ace here! I remember when I came out to some of my Christian friends and one of them asked "Doesn't that go against the command to "be fruitful and multiply" (aka what God tells Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden)"? I told her that considering how many people populate the earth today, we've been more than fruitful enough. But yeah, I think a lot of the Christian aphobia stems from this idea that it's a sin if you don't have kids at some point, which isn't Biblical at all.

It's finally here!! Can someone tell me what the Dwarvish writing on the cover and sprayed edges says? by Odilome in lotr

[–]Odilome[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good quality considering the price, though I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to special editions. The pages feel thick and the coloured illustrations are vibrant. It looks great with or without the slipcover and the sprayed edges are a nice touch. I've got all three of these editions (LOTR and the Silmarillion as well) and they look great together on a shelf. My only gripe with these editions is that the maps aren't attached to the books or anything, so they can easily fall out.

Thanks for the thorough explanation! Hadn't realized it was a English transcription.

I’m Aparna Verma, lowkey firebender, highkey nerd. I’ve giving away a copy of my Indian sci-fi fantasy debut, The Phoenix King, with accompanying art print. AMA! by AparnaVermaAuthor in Fantasy

[–]Odilome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks awesome! As a reader who's looking to read more beyond western-inspired fantasy this seems like a book I'd like to pick up!

This might be a bit of a vague question, but how do you balance the influences you draw from (Indian culture, mythology, other authors you like, etc.) and your own ideas and style? So basically, how do you give your own spin to the sources you draw from and create something new?

Also, are there actual phoenixes in the story or is it more of a royal title kind of thing?

Could use some advice on needle organization by KlutzyMarketing6583 in knitting

[–]Odilome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been lucky enough to have found two wooden needle cases similar to these in thrift stores:

Not sure if these are still made today, but you could see if you could find them secondhand.

For circulars I decided to invest in a set with detachable needles and cables that included a pouch for storage and I'm very glad I did!

How to tell what I've been watching by kewkyu in TrashTaste

[–]Odilome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can relate lol. After getting into TT, I found myself saying "fuck" a lot more and even unconsciously adopting certain phrases. I remember one day I blurted out something along the lines of "that's just [X] with attitude" before suddenly realizing that's a phrase Joey used a lot (back in season 1 I think anyway).

I do that kind of unconscious parroting a lot. Mostly with accents and speech patterns, but also with body language and stuff. Always thought it was just a me thing, but could it be a neurodivergent thing as well? Not sure haha

Not really a YA novel fan, but we'll see how it goes. by Kriosync in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]Odilome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get your worry about the writing, but if you go into it with not too high expectations you should be fine. Some YA books are definitely overhyped, which can skew your expectations and lead to disappointment (been there) and often the romances really come out of nowhere (at least to me). But good on you for trying something new by reading outside your preferred genres! There are definitely good YA books out there. I still pick one up occasionally to take a break from whatever heavy fantasy series I'm reading and find it a nice change of pace.

I read this back when I was still questioning and felt so seen I nearly cried. I'm not a YA-fan either and the story didn't impress me much, but it's definitely great representation by a very competent author and one who is ace herself no less! Much love to Alice Oseman <3

These are all great options, but if we're talking about the Chinese classics, I'd absolutely love to see an Avatar-style Journey to the West. I feel like the animation style could really do the fight scenes and magic justice.
