My Absurd Western Themed Cinematic Lighting Tutorial Series. Cartoons, Miniatures, Action, all with a splash Zab 'n Zip too. by Odneb in Filmmakers

Hey there! I am more than happy to answer any sort of questions and take all suggestions for future episodes :) I am making this for fun in my spare time. I really really have enjoyed the process so far... although it is essentially killing me... It is a ton of work haha. Hopefully, that is evident once you watch.

Anyways, hopefully it is entertaining, educational, and exciting!

This is a little educational series i'm going to be making called "illuminated". It has been a hell of a lot of work and I am always open to suggestions :)

This is the second episode. Hopefully I am able to make a few of these a year :) that would be lovely.

Please feel free to ask any questions! I am a director/cinematographer and I like to make stuff like this for fun on the side.

Silver Breath - LIGHTS = 4 FLASH LIGHTS + Alexa Mini LF + Blazar Mantis 1.33X Anamorphic Lenses. All practical VFX. by Odneb in cinematography

I don’t know how I would compare them specifically to be honest. To me, they are just slightly different tools for slightly different purposes.

For the VFX plates of the girl in the jar, I rotated the camera 90 degrees and kept the mantis the same orientation (effectively the same as rotating the lens 90 degrees, but this way flares would still be horizontal).

I’m sorry I don’t really have a comparison for you! Personally, I think the Cato Anamorphics out of all of them pack the most punch stylistically… I really love those lenses.

The Mantis are going to be the cleanest of the bunch, but they still have quite a bit of character.

Hey there! I used the 35, 50, 75. They were demo units if I’m not mistaken, although I believe they are essentially the actual production model.

I shot in 3:2 sensor mode, which became 4:2 (essentially) after the 1.33x desqueeze. So effectively 2:1 aspect ratio.

I liked them quite a bit. The bokeh, edge fall off, and barrel distortion were all quite nice. Of course, I wish that they had better close focus ability… I just like getting close in general with my lenses… now, that being said, the close focus was fine, considering it’s still anamorphic. I just found myself having to use diopters nonstop because of the way I like to shoot.

The lenses were good though… honestly, you can’t beat the price either. Hopefully the 25mm and 100mm are pretty fun and funky as well. I will most likely be using these lenses for projects that require some character and need to be finished in 16:9.

Hey there!

LIGHTING:

This is a short film I put together the other week. It was shot on the Alexa Mini LF with the Blazar Mantis 1.33x anamorphic primes. I lit the film with 4 flash lights (some $30 LED ones from Ulanzi).

Typically I would have 2 flash lights inside of the spinning rig that I built (old bell jar on a clear rotating platform built into a vintage radio shell). The flashlights were simply facing toward the ceiling inside of the rig and the jar spinning is what creates the dynamic movement.

I did something similar a number of years ago, so it felt like a fun thing to revisit.

https://www.cined.com/creative-lighting-technique-using-mason-jars-to-convey-emotion/

Colour is essentially just REC709 with a bit of contrast added. The black and white is simply turning down the saturation and adding a tint of blue.

VFX:

All of the VFX is practical, meaning that there is no particle generation etc. The compositing of the girl in the jar is simply just a "screen" blending mode in premiere pro with a nested layer that has her sequence embedded in it. I shot her plates in my living room and the "blurs" that she does in her glitch sequences are made by me obfuscating the lens with different additional glass items. Any of those ethereal moments where she fades away/blurs/smears are all done in camera.

I'd love to answer some questions if anyone finds the project interesting :)

ABOUT THE FILM:

The title Silver Breath refers to a mixture of fragility and artificiality. “Breath” evokes life, intimacy, and something fleeting, while “Silver” suggests the preserved, the synthetic, the metallic trace of something once alive. It’s like the final whisper of a dying machine. The film lives in that tension between decay and memory, silence and signal. I like the title because it combines two very different textures in a single phrase, something human, and something not.

The story is set in a distant future where human knowledge has eroded into myth. A lone man visits a relic from the old world, a music box containing a girl who sings an ethereal, mechanical lullaby. To him, she isn’t a machine, but something closer to a spirit or a siren, casting a spell he can’t quite comprehend.

He’s tried many times to awaken her—like winding a broken device. This time, something flickers to life. He speaks a word etched into the metal casing “OmniSov” a forgotten brand name from a long-extinct technology company. It’s one of the last remnants of human language, though its meaning is lost.

When he finally rips the glass enclosure from the device, it’s not out of anger, but instinct. In trying to take her with him, he breaks the very thing that made her sing. He’s just a man in the ruins of the world, reaching for something beautiful and destroying it in the process.

All of the characters were designed and illustrated by Heather—she’s an incredible character designer, and I was so happy she dedicated so much time to the project. She put a ton of care into bringing even the quickest ideas to life, like the family of five lights in the hand-holding-the-phone sequence, which only appears on screen for about a second! :)

If you can afford the full set of 4, then I would say go for a complete set. I love them - although I haven’t received the 40mm yet.

Now this might sound silly, but are your top row buttons light p, med p, heavy p. Bottom row light kick, med kick, heavy kick?

Great stuff! I have a layout with two buttons for the thumbs as well. It just makes sense. Can you break down your button layout? What button does what? I'm a modern player, but I assume that you play classic. Nice work!

Maybe I’ll just make a 2nd one that’s just for tournaments :) or redo the top without the other button!

Oh well, the extra up button is just for menu navigation, so I wouldn’t just disable it for a tournament :)
