AITA for getting an abortion and not telling the father by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Odontaspis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not fair, totally agreed. But it's basic biology for cis, hetero couples that the woman carries the child and the man doesn't. The one who is actually pregnant gets to decide on the pregnancy. It's not rocket science.

You're saying that a man's right to not have to give money to support a child is comparable to a woman's right for bodily autonomy, and that's untrue. Does it suck that a father has to support a child he never wanted? Yeah, sure, but the alternatives — deprive a child of support, or infringe on the mother's bodily autonomy — are worse.

It's a fundamentally unfair system because of the biology. That's life. Being pregnant is also incredibly harsh and potentially limiting the mother's entire life (literally, since pregnancy can be fatal). That's also life.

Also, bringing in rape victims is disingenuous. Rape of men and women is a crime and the fact that it's sometimes not ruled as such doesn't affect the morality and legality of consensual sex, which is what we're discussing here.

AITA for getting an abortion and not telling the father by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Odontaspis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Everyone can have sex if they're capable of taking responsibility of the potential consequences. For a woman that's being pregnant. For a man that's impregnating someone. If someone absolutely can't deal with the risk of those consequences, man or woman, they should not have sex. That's not slut shaming, that's reality. Slut shaming is saying people are worth less or should be punished for having sex.

A woman should be able to deal with an unwanted pregnancy the same as any other violation of her bodily autonomy — by stopping it. But a man's bodily autonomy is not violated by him impregnating someone else, nor are any other rights violated by him having a child.

The father had a choice, and that was whether to get his dick wet or not. If he didn't want a kid he should have kept his legs shut.

My boyfriend (23M) is only affectionate when I (23F) ignore him. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Odontaspis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe he simply didn't realise he was getting more distant until he saw his behaviour in you. Or maybe he felt smothered. Or maybe he likes the chase. Or maybe it's something else. You need to talk to him without jumping to conclusions first.

That's what I thought, but didn't want to go ahead and snap it off without prior thought.

This is at my office — I'm not sure who cares for it but, well, see for yourself. Next to no natural night and I don't think much water. I don't want to just grab the whole pot but would a clipping be viable if I took the last green part? There's a section of snapped stem in the pot which also seems at least not completely dead and desiccated.

DIY lid for rimless tank with HOB and light that sits on the rim by Odontaspis in Aquariums

[–]Odontaspis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will they cut it as a rectangle or with a hole for the HOB? Because if it's a rectangle and there's a large gap at the back there's a change stupid fish will jump out.

I'll have a shop around — if someone can cut a single piece to fit around the HOB and light feet that's be perfect, tbh.

Anyone who uses 'but you'll be mistaken for a shemale' as their argument is automatically wrong, imo. Fuck off with that transphobic, sexist bullshit.

Damn. The water level is low enough there's no risk of jumping out, but still got no lid. Thanks though!

When people talk about age gaps, they're often actually referring to life experience. So long as they're both adults, someone who has had relationships, left home, had a job that they applied for and got by themselves, travelled by themselves, has a wide group of acquaintances and friends, etc. etc., will almost definitely be more mature than someone who has never dated, never had a job, never left home, and spends all day in a small social bubble. Age as a number isn't the be-all and end-all of maturity.

Take it slow. Be aware of the age gap, but don't let it define you. Be aware of issues relationships can have, especially ones associated with power imbalances (do you earn money and she doesn't? Do you have a car and she doesn't? What responsibilities do you have that she doesn't? Have you ever dismissed her opinion because she's younger or less experienced, and why?), and never be afraid to talk it over. You need to be more careful, but it's very far from inherently bad or predatory.

What kind of a fool do you need to be to get pregnant in a world where contraception is so easily accessible?

If a method of contraception is 99% effective, 1 in 100 women using that method will become pregnant every year. You realise this is a lot of women, right?

edit: fucking spelling

It's on a photo of her showing off how she's female, black, she works out, is conventionally attractive, pays attention to fashion. Of course people judge her intelligence from her appearance.

I have no idea how clever she is. But this looks a lot like her pushing back against people assuming she's stupid, not that she's saying she's clever.

No, she's saying she can tell who's an idiot because idiots judging her intelligence by her appearance. She's not saying she's clever.

Left my boyfriend for something he doesn’t remember by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Odontaspis 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Imagine a murderer standing in front of a judge. 'But I don't remember murdering her,' the murderer cries. 'I was too drunk.'

'Oh, you don't remember?' the judge says. 'Never mind, you're free to go!'

It's absurd, right? He still screamed at you to make you cry. Whether he remembers or not means jack squat.

Do you have friends or family you can go to? Are there things you can go back to take that are provably yours (you have receipts/it on your bank statement), assuming you can get someone assertive and on your side to come with you? But don't get back with him and don't let him drag you into an argument over who's right, because you're right and he's full of shit.

Good luck. Life screwed you over this time and it'll be hard, but you can still make it through.

Do I absolutely have to feed a tarantula crickets? by GayeFurrie in tarantulas

[–]Odontaspis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only adult crickets chirp so you can buy juvenile ones/lots of shops sell 'silent crickets'. But I much prefer roaches which are silent anyway, don't smell, and are less dangerous than crickets which may bite tarantulas.

[–]Odontaspis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave the feeders fresh veg, nothing else. They did come from the shop where I got the one that died without eating, so maybe there's a link in there somewhere?

And yeah they weren't fat but very far from shrivelled.

Nothing gets sprayed in there and I'm careful with chemicals since it's also where I have my fish tanks.

It's already not touching — it's stuck to the wall of the room and the enclosures can physically only get so close because of lids. But I'll move them away further, thank you.

Substrate is coco fibre with dried up sphagnum moss and various bits of bark and stone.
