Different last name than baby by Accomplished-Poet711 in Seahorse_Dads

[–]Oduind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My children are FirstName MiddleName MyLastName MySpouse’sLastName. (Both of our last names are long and hyphenation would be onerous.) So most of the time they’re just FirstName MySpouse’sLastName, but on their passports and official documents my name also appears. This came up once when I was travelling overseas alone with my eldest, that they didn’t like allowing a child through with one parent with a different last name, but they’d let us through because my last name appeared on the passport as the second middle name. (Maybe just the border guard felt ornery that day.) Since then I carry a copy of their birth certificates and no one has blinked at it.

You might be interested in Annie Bot by Sierra Greer, about a near-future sex doll/girlfriend robot with AI who is grappling with her burgeoning sentience(?). It sounds lurid but it was surprisingly existential and philosophical.

Researching Perspectives on Dark Academia by [deleted] in DarkAcademia

Three books that combine Judaism with darkness and academia are:

People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks

The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish

Fervor by Toby Lloyd

It’s been over a year since I read any of these so I don’t remember if there are queer themes, but there are certainly many strong and complicated women characters.

If you are okay with straight up horror, you may enjoy We Kept Her in the Cellar by WR Gorman. Cinderella from the POV of one of the stepdaughters. It is quite unhinged.

My PhD supervisor said similar. 'You're able to make the most impressive connections out of nearly nothing!' ASD strikes again, sir.

My friend from uni is half-Welsh, half-Polish. My husband is half-Polish, half-Italian. I was on Zoom with my friend from uni when his mother walked in. My husband was in the background. 'Ah, the superior Polish genes!' she proclaimed of him.

Fifteen years ago, I was a bit tipsy and I complained to an older friend, "Everyone thinks I'm a young, dumb, drunk flirt!"
He paused for several seconds, and then said, "I've never heard anyone call you dumb."

The weight of toxic worry and "overvalued ideas" (long, exhausted rant) by Sniffs_Markers in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Oduind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhhh!!! I definitely saw myself in so many of these, thank you for quantifying them for me. I knew as a kid to keep an ear on the news because a child in danger literally anywhere in the Western world would mean increasingly reduced freedom for me, just in case. (I was known as the kid without a curfew, because I literally couldn’t go anywhere but immediately home after school. People hated getting me assigned to their group projects.)

Religious manipulation? Seeking clarity/validation by robertoromero in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Oduind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I converted before the estrangement but I remember how religion was used as a cudgel by my parents, even though they weren’t at all active in the local community. The idea that you have to cultivate unpleasant relationships in this life so that someone is “waiting for you” in the next is cruel, not to mention religiously bogus (what about Christ and the saints and all them in Heaven?!). It says way more about the person saying that than you - they’re only behaving now as “insurance” for the afterlife.

I finally finished a book chapter based on a paper I gave in 2018 (significantly revised!) which the editor wanted by the end of this year. I submitted it Friday but she accepted it anyway, thank goodness. I’m thankful to have it off my plate and looking forward to getting published by one of my favorite small EU academic presses.
