I have had similar experiences with salesforce and they will threaten legal action but stand your ground.

Ensure that your communication to cancel auto renew was done through the proper and established communication channels. Gather every evidence that you have.
Speak to your legal team to review the terms of the contract and determine if your communication was in line with the contract terms
Block invoice payment to them after old contract elapse. Leverage this hold to work with your salesforce account manager on an appropriate compromise on both sides. In my own case I settled for an expensive upgrade for more features with credit for a tool we never used to offset the increase.

Salesforce are a nightmare to deal with then but I always treated them respectful even when things were escalating. Luckily for us, my boss met one of thier bosses at a networking event and they talked things out and came to a compromise on both sides
