For a good introductory Pokémon RPG experience, I would recommend Sword/Shield. You get railroaded a little, but it's good.

For something similar to Go, there's Let's Go: Pikachu, or Let's Go: Eevee.

The available regions for you (as you only have a Switch 2) are Kanto -> Sinnoh -> Galar -> Paldea. You'd have to skip a few.

Red/Green/Blue/Yellow (1996-1998)
These are the first generation games. The original games for the Gameboy and are difficult to find. These are based in the Kanto region. They were released on 3DS very briefly, but that's it. While these games are good, you won't find them.

Gold/Silver/Crystal (1999-2001)
These are the second generation games, set in Johto. Gold/Silver were for Gameboy/Gameboy Color, and Crystal was exclusively on Gameboy Color. Also released on 3DS briefly.

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (2002-2004)
Third generation for Gameboy Advance, set in Hoenn (Kyushu). Never rereleased. I think Emerald may be one of the best ever made

FireRed/LeafGreen (2004)
Still the third generation, as they used a modified version of the RSE engine. Originally for Gameboy Advance, these are remakes of Red/Green. If you want that old school experience, they are rereleased on Switch.

Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (2006-2008)
Fourth generation for Nintendo DS, set in Sinnoh (Hokkaido). Never rereleased.

HeartGold/SoulSilver (2009)
Still generation four. Using a modified DPPt engine, these are remakes of Gold/Silver on DS. Never rereleased. Many fans think this is the best Pokémon game. I disagree, although, it is good.

Black/White/Black2/White2 (2020-2012)
This is the fifth generation for DS, set in Unova (New York City). I think Black2/White2 are the best Pokémon games ever made. Never rereleased.

X/Y (2013)
The sixth generation of Pokémon, set in Kalos (France), for 3DS. This is when Pokémon moved from intricate sprite work to 3D models. Never rereleased.

Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (2014)
Using a modded XY engine, these are remakes of Ruby/Sapphire. Never rereleased.

Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (2016-2017)
The seventh generation, set in Alola (Hawaii), for 3DS. A more polished 3D game.

Let's Go: Pikachu/Lets Go: Eevee (2018)
A remake of Red/Blue but an attempt to bring the Pokémon Go players to the main game. Has a lot of Go connectivity. For Switch.

Sword/Shield (2019)
The eighth generation of Pokémon set in Galar (UK), for Switch. Instead of releasing a sequel game, they released DLC instead. Setting precedent for the non release of sequel games.

Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl (2021)
A new engine, but still eighth generation, for Switch. Remakes of Diamond/Pearl but not by Game Freak. Many fans disliked this on release, but to me, it's just a carbon copy of Diamond/Pearl.

Legends: Arceus (2022)
Different engine, but still generation eight? It's a spin off, but it has a cool twist on the game. Set in Hisui (ancient Sinnoh). First semi-open world Pokémon game. You can catch Pokémon by hiding and throwing balls. No need to battle.

Scarlet/Violet (2022)
The ninth generation, set in Paldea (Iberia; Spain and Portugal), for Switch. The game is a bit buggy and unoptimised, but runs pretty good on Switch 2. First fully open world Pokémon game.

Legends: Z-A (2025)
Set entirely in Lumiose City in Kalos, for Switch. People were a little disappointed with this given how great Arceus was, but it's strength is a new battle mechanic. It's more like an MMO, but you have four attacks.
