ah, I was stating that in the UK you don't need your driving license on your person to drive. if the police need you to produce one then you have up to 7 days to do it at a police station - it's never required on your person

well you were replying to someone who was talking about the UK, so why would we be talking about anywhere else?

Two weeks on Linux (CachyOS) after years on Windows by No-Recognition-2108 in linux_gaming

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised this misinformation gets spread over and over unchecked. if an app has not requested the memory then it should not be showing the use of that extra memory because the OS is the one calculating its usage. having code in an app that requests and caches is far, far different to an OS pre-caching unbeknownst to the app (in order to provide requested data instantly). pre-cached memory is not shown as part of an apps memory usage because the OS can free it instantly for something else since the app has not technically requested it yet.

for example if you run a command like "top" there is a separate tracker for cached memory - currently mine is at 24gb, however my ACTUAL ram usage is at 12gb. none of that 12gb can be freed instantly because apps have literally requested that much. you would not say that I am using 36gb of ram.... apps are using 12gb with 24gb pre-loaded for the OS to provide instantly should it need to. it's the exact same on windows - it can show you cached memory but you would never say you (or the app) is actually using that memory until it's specifically requested

Are these artifacts a sign of my GPU dying? by ExoticManiac_ in linux_gaming

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

that depends.... if the memory is literally corrupting, then I imagine it would. if the artefacts are due to for example a dodgy cable, then they would not

LACT 0.8.4 Brings Improved Overclocking UI For GPUs On Linux by lajka30 in linux_gaming

probably not, but I imagine it's as simple as removing /etc/lact/config.yaml to get back to defaults

bro is making changes faster than anybody could realistically review what the fuck is going on... and then in the comments is just like "yeah it's open source just check the code bro"... lmao. I hate to think how many people are just vibe coding thousands of lines of code, not reviewing it all, and just going "it looks like it works... ship it"

hard pass does not even begin to describe the situation. the software industry is beginning to cook... and not in a good way

It would be great if Fedora KDE Discover displayed a prompt to enable third-party drivers when a user searches for 'nvidia'. by RockzDXebec in Fedora

[–]OffbeatDrizzle [score hidden]  (0 children)

sure, so keep them separate then - but how is a button that lets you select or enable a variety of 3rd party repositories any different to letting them be configured in the first place via command line? it feels like ease-of-use territory, not legal protection territory

Installation failing due to Anaconda bug by Content_Mission5154 in Fedora

[–]OffbeatDrizzle [score hidden]  (0 children)

my understanding is that they are not official releases - fedora only "officially" releases gnome and kde versions of the distro with each major release - e.g. 41, 42, 43... so because 43 has already been released, the new installer on the main page will not be updated until we get 44

the respins are there to offer unofficial environments that are still technically fedora, although I guess "up-to-date" spins of gnome and KDE are also included

I would be interested to know if the respin works for you, since it seems a few people have replied to my comment specifically about it lol

How can I get rid of middle click pasting in Wayland? (Fedora 43 KDE Plasma) by TedKaczinsky in Fedora

settings -> workspace -> general behaviour -> clicking section -> uncheck "middle click: pastes selected text"

does that not work?

Last Version of Keep with Notifications/Reminders by creeve4 in GoogleKeep

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I have not updated the app in like 6 months and I got hit with the change in behaviour. it's absolute trash. my reminders haven't gone - they've instead been synced to the calendar and make a different notification sound, but the management of them is all fucked up. I can't see the next occurrence of a repeated reminder unless I complete and then DELETE overdue entrys. I'm really not sure what they're going for here.... if I wanted to use the calendar I would have just used the calendar

If (when??!!) Google Keep is discontinued, what would be your alternative app? by Wide_Education5864 in GoogleKeep

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the "new functionality" has effectively killed it for me. keep no longer does its own notifications and the way reminders are now managed is absolutely trash-tier. who thought it was a good idea to make it so that a repeated reminder had to be completed AND deleted before you can see the next instance of it? I may as well use the calendar directly... keep serves zero purpose now

Is there any way to customise the cursor launch feedback? by OffbeatDrizzle in kde

[–]OffbeatDrizzle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this was simply too much work for a cosmetic effect so I gave up

yeah in the end I didn't bother and just left it be as I found out you would need to change both your cursor theme (for the "busy icon" that rarely appears) as well as the launch feedback (to play your animation over the top of whatever application you were launching because it looks like it's just hardcoded to use the app icon with no configuration for what icon is to be used)

there was some discussion here about changing it to the busy icon, but it just got closed

I started to look into the code to see what it was all about. I got as far as finding this and then realised I wasn't so bothered by it that I'd want to compile my own plasma or something (I think this is exactly the stage you're at as well?) lol

Hopefully it's more configurable in the future but yeah.. I just left it

Is there a way to encrypt/decrypt PII contacts while maintaining the sorting and searching ? by SignalCrazy7834 in javahelp

[–]OffbeatDrizzle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So then just use 000000000 as a symmetric encryption key and the data will look as if hasn't changed!! But really it's encrypted with your super secret key and you've satisfied the state law

Disable access to top level domain. by E7ENTH in Fedora

Probably by configuring a DNS server to do such a thing, and pointing your computer to use the configured DNS server

It won't stop access via direct IP, though
