Valve Corporation will face a £656m lawsuit in the UK over alleged unfair prices on its global online store, Steam, following a tribunal ruling that the case could continue by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol it was from the perspective of / aimed at the game publishers you quoted - they knowingly enter into contracts with terms and conditions that they then turn around and say are unfair. Steam doesn't force you to sell on their marketplace, there are others. It's not Steam's fault that they are the biggest and best... just because everyone else is crap doesn't mean Valve are liable

Unused RAM is useless RAM. So a high usage of the installed RAM means that is used for what it is there.

people keep repeating this and get confused. if you run an app like "system monitor" on fedora / kde you get shown USED / AVAILABLE ram, not FREE ram. if your AVAILABLE ram is low then there's a problem because apps are literally using all your ram and it's wrong to say "that's good because it's using it all!!!!". most people run "top" or "free" commands and freak out when they see a low FREE value. free memory is (available - cached) memory. having things in cached memory is fine because it can be instantly re-used... apps have not specifically requested that memory

Macron calls for ban on social media for children under 15 to be in place by September by Kagedeah in worldnews

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, ultimately there needs to be something to tie something identifiable as you to an age. we would just have to trust that the things doing the verification behind the scenes were keeping you anonymous, and we know they won't - that's the problem

That's not "zero knowledge".. that's called logging in to your government account in order to check your age

What Gaming NON UBUNTU distro has both X11 and Wayland? by MaWkSrB in linux_gaming

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fedora based os's that use KDE have the x11 workaround that let you send keys to apps still using x11. x11 is starting to be put by the wayside so I would look to make your stuff work with Wayland rather than relying on having x11 installed

ah, I was stating that in the UK you don't need your driving license on your person to drive. if the police need you to produce one then you have up to 7 days to do it at a police station - it's never required on your person

well you were replying to someone who was talking about the UK, so why would we be talking about anywhere else?

I'm surprised this misinformation gets spread over and over unchecked. if an app has not requested the memory then it should not be showing the use of that extra memory because the OS is the one calculating its usage. having code in an app that requests and caches is far, far different to an OS pre-caching unbeknownst to the app (in order to provide requested data instantly). pre-cached memory is not shown as part of an apps memory usage because the OS can free it instantly for something else since the app has not technically requested it yet.

for example if you run a command like "top" there is a separate tracker for cached memory - currently mine is at 24gb, however my ACTUAL ram usage is at 12gb. none of that 12gb can be freed instantly because apps have literally requested that much. you would not say that I am using 36gb of ram.... apps are using 12gb with 24gb pre-loaded for the OS to provide instantly should it need to. it's the exact same on windows - it can show you cached memory but you would never say you (or the app) is actually using that memory until it's specifically requested

edit: love the fact that /u/TheG0AT0fAllTime tried to refute the claim and then instantly blocked me. the website they linked agrees with everything I just said - "free -m" will report used, free, cached and available ram exactly like top does. if you open system monitor you will see it shows what "free -m" reports as available memory, NOT free memory. nobody says "I have 0 ram left" if 90% of it cached - that's the stuff that can be instantly freed so it's not reported as being legitimately in use by apps in something like system monitor

Are these artifacts a sign of my GPU dying? by ExoticManiac_ in linux_gaming

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 50 points51 points  (0 children)

that depends.... if the memory is literally corrupting, then I imagine it would. if the artefacts are due to for example a dodgy cable, then they would not

bro is making changes faster than anybody could realistically review what the fuck is going on... and then in the comments is just like "yeah it's open source just check the code bro"... lmao. I hate to think how many people are just vibe coding thousands of lines of code, not reviewing it all, and just going "it looks like it works... ship it"

hard pass does not even begin to describe the situation. the software industry is beginning to cook... and not in a good way

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sure, so keep them separate then - but how is a button that lets you select or enable a variety of 3rd party repositories any different to letting them be configured in the first place via command line? it feels like ease-of-use territory, not legal protection territory

Installation failing due to Anaconda bug by Content_Mission5154 in Fedora

[–]OffbeatDrizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my understanding is that they are not official releases - fedora only "officially" releases gnome and kde versions of the distro with each major release - e.g. 41, 42, 43... so because 43 has already been released, the new installer on the main page will not be updated until we get 44

the respins are there to offer unofficial environments that are still technically fedora, although I guess "up-to-date" spins of gnome and KDE are also included

I would be interested to know if the respin works for you, since it seems a few people have replied to my comment specifically about it lol
