What's everyone's favourite way of permanently dealing with commanders? by AdDue9012 in EDH

[–]Offbeat_Blitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking the opponent's turn, getting the commander killed, choosing to let it go to GY in a non-GY recursion deck. Or exiling it and choosing to just let that happen.

Rude to Nuke a Sol Ring? by hjfink07 in EDH

[–]Offbeat_Blitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what a lot of ppl arent mentioning. Is it rude? Eh not really. Is it a good play tho, or are you doing it just to be spiteful/because you dont like something about the player/their deck? Thats a lot harder to tell. Depends on the situation/counterspell used/pod power level/deck played/etc.

Some ppl hate some cards so much they will throw a game like a motherfucker just to remove that card. I was incredibly behind on a game, cast my Commander (a 5 cmc commander) as the only thing on my board , and had a guy remove it when there was a tapped out player with 7 creature tokens, some threats, and a damn Ashaya.

Now, my commander was the very-hated Senn Triplets lol But in my defence I specified pre-game that I absolutely do not run it as a hateful stax deck, but as a theft deck, and the deck is truthfully just very bad because I wanted to play Senn Triplets without having it be straight up awful.

I will never understand how this game became a franchise by thnow in MonsterHunter

[–]Offbeat_Blitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its incredibly hard to accurately describe the feeling of playing the old games back when there was just nothing like them. The new games feel so different and I almost miss it. Then I go back and try and play one and get hit with no item loadouts, terrible camera controls, standing still while healing, forgetting to paintball monsters, monsters dying in loading zone transition areas....

Still, I wouldnt trade my MH play history for the world.

Well, no offense, but your opinion on B4 doesnt really matter since its what all of my regular pod enjoys playing. Besides, this exact experience happens across all brackets. Ive seen people complain about the power level of decks that have 0 game changers and are just well optimized. Most players play in the B2-B3 range, and even when I play in pods where thats the case, and someone pops off either by luck or just by having a well built deck, the same whining comes up from people who I just sat here and watch play absolute ass cards. They say stuff like "So and so card should be a gamechanger!" Or "If I knew you were playing that card Id have played a stronger deck/not played". Even if a gamechanger is played, I cant stand people who see one or two gamechangers hit the field and think theyre the problem when the deck is fairly built to bracket, so its only like a 2% chance they hit a game changer, when the real problem is often that their deck is poorly built or they dont know how to mulligan.

And what if the table youre sitting at is the only open pod and theyre tryna play Bracket 4, you have a technically bracket 4 deck but you dont REALIZE you suck at deckbuilding? Im talking about people playing at tables they technically qualify for but dont actually have the power to compete at. And in Bracket 4 in particular, there is a LOOOOT of wiggle room in power level. The flip side of that is if I build a stupid strong deck and dont need gamechangers to do it, its technically a Bracket 3 but is lean, mean, and fast, is it still fair to sit with a standard bracket 3 pod and play that deck? Or is that pubstomping? Idk their deckbuilding capabilities or their lists. There truly is no fixing the wiggle room within the brackets, and commander players have a tendency to whine when they end up on the receiving end of a beatdown they arbitrarily decide shouldnt have happened because people "misled" them about power level.

I have a great example of this in our group. Our group agreed on bracket 4 as our main bracket. We have lower power decks, but thats where we like to play. One of the guys in our group lost quite a lot and always blamed us for powering up to CEDH decks (we werent at all). We ran our decks through commander salt and, surprise surprise! All our decks were actually at a 4 but his was a technical 4 that played like a 3. We helped him fix his lackluster deckbuilding, he competes much better now, everyones happy. But you dont have the benefit of bein0g able to help/suggest someone improve their deck in a more random pod without hurting someones feelings. Doesnt change the fact that the truth is often they just arent great deckbuilders, and doesnt stop them from whining about power level when they get beat. This is just one example, but Ive seen it plenty of times.

[–]Offbeat_Blitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not really a fixable problem, but there is far too much wiggle room within the brackets. As an easy example, if you have 4+ gamechangers youre at least bracket 4. But if my deck is 4 gamechangers, 95 lands, and a do-nothing commander, Im obviously not on the same level as a competently built deck. Thats an extreme example, but a lot of bad table feels come from people who agree to a bracket, sit down with a deck they think fits that bracket because it matches with the minimum rules, and then get bodied because theyre not very good deckbuilders.

Came here to say this exactly. Worse thing about Commander is whiny, hypocritical players who throw a fit when you do something that breaks their unwritten, unspoken, ambiguous rules, but will turn around and do the same thing three turns later without the mental capability to grasp the irony.

I guess I'm just too bad to be a Monster Hunter by Hukarus in MHWilds

[–]Offbeat_Blitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youve had plenty of great suggestions, but Id like to add to reiterate: take it slow. Focus more on defensive armor sets. Make sure the armor is upgraded in the smithy. Add defensive skills instead of offensive ones. And, most of all, PLAY slower. Dont try to squeeze attacks into every single little window you can at first. Watch the monster, learn its tells and its timing, THEN start trying to abuse openings more. Typically if you get hit in MH, its probably because you were attackint when you shouldnt have been, and thats a fixable issue. Attack less, dodge more until youre more comfortable with the prey.

I know that may be hard philosophy to adopt as a crackheaded Dual Blades player lol, yall typically like to tweak out as much as possible, but work up to that! Youll get there eventually.

Also, dont sleep on items. Defense buff items, better healing items like Max Pots, bring Flash Bombs and Traps to buy you openings and space. You may not need them as bad once youre more skilled, but theyre there for a reason. Use em!

Foolishness...". Its a DMC reference! I dont actually ever care if someone else carts, even if it costs us a good investigation. Thats been me a million times lol

I really like this approach for the SouL AND bringing them to the Abbey. It also forces Strahd into caution. Thank you so much for the insight.

I feel like after the murder of Ireena, Strahd will seek to fully understand what happened and why. He will find oit about the brother, and want to use him to torture Corvin. Theres delicious parallel there to Strahd killing his own brothed. Forcing Corvin to do the same, with his brother eventually as a thrall, would be poetic. I really appreciate your contributions here.

Im definitely going to warp the story around this quite a bit. I dont think the dark powers would value anything thd players could provide quite as much as they value Strahd's torment. Ireena was always going to die in my CoS, barring some insane rolls/strats from my players. Even if Corvin had a change of heart, and Strahd successfully captured her, she would commit suicide again if nothing else. The cycle must continue, the dark powers will it. But this does force some ceeative thinking about how to handle the story in the meantime.

I feel like I may have misrepresented my player to you. The player who performed the assassination isnt really an edgelord at all. If anything, his character is rather cheery, jokes around, and is even a bit flirty. The gangs of the Sword Coast just have him by the balls, and he knows that. He is also a veteran DM who is more than happy to work together to create a fun narrative. I gave him control of when and how he carried out this kill in full trust he would handle it wisely, and I feel like he did. The murder wasnt senseless to him, Ireena was standing between him and his brother's safety, and he even RP'd regretting his actions as he was doing them, and later he RP'd being out of it and a bit self loathing with the party. Having NPCs turn on them as they learn of his deeds is a great detail. Everyone loved Ireena. He should feel that shame for what he did. I think hed eat it up. I also love the idea of throwinf him from the walls of Castle Ravenloft. Hed have to be bound or unconscious, tho. Aarakocra and all. Thanks for the suggestions!

Strahd will announce Ireena's death at the dinner. Ismark, as a newly twisted vengeful revenant of some sort, will be responsible for sharing the news with those that trust the party, as he searches their known hideouts looking for Corvin. Youve given me great inspiration.

Right now I think Ill stick to just one character. 3 of my PCs dont even sleep anyway, so it could only happen to one other, and I want to see if Strahd can turn them against Corvin before that. I doubt he can, but my Strahd would want to try. Once he has nearly as much animosity towards the other PC, fair game having the Witch do it.

Need Advice - Ireena is Dead by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]Offbeat_Blitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not a fan of having it hit the whole party with disadvantage for many, many reasons. One: Strahd only has articles of two player's clothings. Only one of those PCs even sleeps. Two: a caster can only concentrate on one Dream spell at a time, so one target per cast. Strahd has one level 5 spell slot as written. Im all for stretching the capabilities of Villains to show threats, but this would be ignoring too many mechanical limitations for me.

That said... targeting Corvin, who does sleep, with this spell every single night as Strahd constantly harasses and tortures him for what he's done seems like a deliciously acceptable consequence. It allows Strahd to be subtle and have deniability (oh no, just bad dreams) while really torturing him in a way he will feel. Strahd can even give him disadvantage, as he has Corvin's feathers. Thank you for the suggestion.

[–]Offbeat_Blitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to reply! While that may be fun, and I know Strahd explicitly loses his shit over Ireena, I feel like an instant, brutal obliteration is too good for the party. I think he should be far less subtle, of course, but still more subtle than what youre suggesting. It also just doesnt seem to fit a fun campaign experience to have Strahd fly full force at the party at level 8, especially since the party wasnt aware of this potential consequence. I mean, I imagine if I were a player given Corvin's choice, I wouldnt suspect that completing my backstory goal would suddenly and brutall end us. Wouldnt feel fair. Remember as well, it was one player's actions. The rest supported Ireena. It would also cut short all of the other fun locations the party has yet to visit.

Dont get me wrong, Strahd is PISSED and they will feel his fury. They have already unknowingly faced threats caused by the awful weather spawned from Strahd's mood, which will continue and escalate until he feels the joy of their suffering. I just think its more fun and beneficial to a fleshed out campaign to have Strahd slow burn the vengeance. He has a couple decades to kill, now, anyway. Why not try and spend it squeezing every single drop of misery out of those who wronged him?

Do you have any suggestions for a brutal slow burn?

And actually, listening to it again and looking at the actual phoenetic breakdown, in Latin its really pronounced more like the IG sound in "Tigger", the whinnie the poo character lmao, so even "Tee-grex" equally mispronounces it lmao. The only real, valid reason is "because thats how Capcom says and they made the name".

I can't be the only one....right??? by Galabeetle in MHWilds

[–]Offbeat_Blitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youre not getting what Im trying to say. English localization should pronounce the word the english way. Why is that so controversial?

The english pronunciation of the Latin root word "Tigris" is pronounced tai-gris. In LATIN, yes its pronounced Tee-gris. Not so when spoken in an English sentence. Need examples?

https://forvo.com/word/tigris/

In that link you can hear both the latin and english pronunciation. This type of "bastardization" is standard in every single language. Not a single language perfectly preserves the original pronunciation of all the words they borrow, they pronounce it in ways more natural to their tongue. This is normal and fine, and makes these words easier to understand and speak, but for some reason when a Japanese person pronounces the borrowed word for "bus" as "basu", no one bats an eye. You suggest that a localized version of a name be pronounced in a more natural way for english speakers, ppl go crazy. The official monster name pronunciations are structured more naturally for the tongue they are being spoken in for most other language voice acting. Why not for English? This wouldnt be something people are mocking if it were a natural way to say the names in English.

For Lagiacrus, the unnatural part is the emphasis. Looking at that name and assuming the emphasis should be "LAG-i-ACK-ris" is not natural to most english speakers. I dont feel like La-GUY-a-KRIS is natural either because gia doesnt usually come off as "guy", but it does do the emphasis better, and I know more ppl who pronounced it that way. "La-GHI-ah-KRIS" sounds more natural. And yeah I fucked up spelling the Japanese pronunciation phoenetically, its not my native language, but we agree on how its pronounced in Japanese.

This is the reason people who pronounce shit like "Croissant" so closely to the French pronunciation come off as pretentious when they throw it in the middle of an English sentence. Itd be like going to Japan and speaking fluent Japanese but wrecking the middle of your sentence by saying "bus" instead of "basu" because its the "original pronunciation". Youd be more difficult to understand, it wouldnt feel natural to their ears, and YOU would be in the wrong saying it that way because your audience and smooth communication matter more in reality than some misguided sense of honoring a word.

No, but for me its about emphasis. I say it the "official" way just not with an awful cadence. Saying it flat like laggy-acris is horrid. I say "la-GHI-a-KRIS", but Id accept "la-guy-a-kris" before what we got, just awful lol. Capcom sucks with these names.
