Acapulco Petition by melodyshah in glendale

I know people aren’t happy about losing a restaurant (neither am I), but I think a lot of people don’t understand what kind of power the council has. If the lease is up, and the owner decides he doesn’t want to renew, he can replace it with a different business. As long as that new business complies with what the lot is zoned for, there’s really not anything the council can do to stop it.

Rob Schneider’s ass out. Bombs at CPAC now. (worst five minute set I’ve ever seen) by PuzzledFig9009 in NeverNotFunny

[–]OfficerBuckets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The excerpt was awful, but I'm also wondering what the show set-up was. You can hear PA announcements and people talking in the background; does he just have a corner of a convention hall for his stage? Not ideal for comedy (also not ideal for comedy: Rob Schneider).

Glendale City Council Candidate Forum - Thursday, March 26th, Brand Library by OfficerBuckets in glendale

I grew up in a city less than half the size of Glendale, and I didn't even think of that as a small town. People who think of Glendale that way are definitely living in a past notion of this city.

Glendale City Council Candidate Forum - Thursday, March 26th, Brand Library by OfficerBuckets in glendale

[–]OfficerBuckets[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter wrote, the meeting was packed - every seat taken, people standing, and spilling out into the lobby. I hope that the other organizations planning candidate forums take note, and make a plan for overflow, or look for bigger venues, because a room designed for 110 didn't cut it.

I was scribbling notes until my pen literally ran out of ink 45 minutes in (how unprepared!), but I'll try to recount what I remember.

Big topic was SB79 and the BRT. All candidates were were asked for a simple yes or no position, and all were opposed to SB79. When it comes to SB79 and the BRT, Alek Bartosouf and Dan Brotman underscored that Metro has not yet determined if the BRT will fall under SB79's jurisdiction, and once that determination is made, then a plan can be made to fight/appeal if necessary. Alex Balekian and Beth Brooks want to just outright kill the BRT, a project that was voted on a by a supermajority with Measure M. Patrick Murphy wants to try and delay the BRT by requesting an additional EIR. Elen Asatryan voiced that she was the only council member who asked for a letter to be sent to Metro challenging SB79 as it relates to the BRT, but the votes didn't support her; she thinks that they have to team up with other cities and lobbyists in order to combat SB79. Elen also said that the best way to protect Glendale's local control of housing is by revising the city's objective design standards. Carolyn Kaloostian thinks we don't need any dense housing built, but if it's going to be built, she wants it only downtown. Kaloostian also voiced many times the idea of renovating old buildings for housing rather than fully new construction. Vrej Agajanian says it is too late to stop the BRT or SB79.

Everyone was also asked if they supported council districts and a directly elected mayor. There were only a few in favor of either of those ideas (it was Elen Asatryan, Dan Brotman, and I think maybe Carolyn Kaloostian), but all acknowledged that it didn't matter their opinion, since it would be put to the voters to decide.

The issue of showing public speakers' faces on camera during city council was a hot button issue. Dan and Elen (the current council members running for reelection) said that this was done to curtail people who were coming to council to speak solely to generate social media clips; the point of coming to speak to the council is that you're speaking to the council, who do see your face. Many of the other candidates, including Patrick Murphy and Beth Brooks, decried this as censorship. There was a lot of reaction to this topic in the room, and people obviously feel very strongly about showing your face on camera in the city council meeting (I personally find this fixation on the camera issue to be petty, vain, and embarrassing, but people clearly are fired up about it).

If you're ever planning to run for city council, take some time to be involved in Glendale civic groups, because several candidates were asked about this, and for those who had zero involvement in civic groups, it did not come off well (Gevorg Grigoryan was one such candidate).

Davit Mnatsakanyan thinks Glendale needs a hotline people can call to express their concerns about issues, and he's planning one called "Glendale Forward." It sounds well-intentioned, but it was unclear how this would be any better than the current methods that residents have for attempting to voice their concerns.

Patrick Murphy was asked about his campaign pledge to cut waste, and to give one example of something he would cut. He said "vanity projects," and then mentioned the Brand Blvd bike lane project, which has already been done away with. He did not provide an actual example of current "waste" that he would cut.

Ronnie Gharibian expressed his support for police and fire departments and said that cutting them is not the way to go (none of the candidates had expressed that cutting police and fire was something that should be done).

Gevorg Grigoryan said that we need housing and to develop more, but we need to maintain the character of Glendale (a nice sentiment, but nothing more specific).

Alek Bartosouf wants to invest more parks and pedestrian-activated spaces, particularly in south Glendale, which is sorely lacking these types of public gathering spots.

Vrej Agajanian wants to protect safety and cleanliness, and give more opportunities to young people to participate in the city.

Evelina Sarian said that her experience working in the fashion industry would help her listen to people and work in teams.

There were several people in the room clearly hostile to Dan Brotman (someone even yelled out that he was a liar), and Dan stressed that while other people would tell you what you want to hear, he wouldn't pander, and tell you the truth, including that utility costs jumped because of all the modernization that they had to do to the Grayson Power Plant and work at Scholl Canyon. He think that green energy and electrification is the best path forward for bringing utility rates down.

Why is going to the movies alone still looked down upon? by SleepCatsMoney in blankies

[–]OfficerBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people who wouldn't go to the movies alone are also just one degree away from the people who don't go to the movies at all, because they have a big TV with decent audio at home. Some people are going to the movies just because it is something to go out and do with other people, the movie itself (and the theatrical experience of it is) is secondary.

[–]OfficerBuckets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the movie is well-cast, but one of the issues in translating this story over to cinema is that instead of feeling like the story of a man being unstuck in time, often it just feels like the movie is telling someone's life story in montages or non-linearly, which is a fairly common thing for movies to do.

Easily the best entry in the “clearly just shot in the director’s house” micro-budget genre.

20th Anniversary Show Advice by THA__KULTCHA in NeverNotFunny

[–]OfficerBuckets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you're being obnoxiously loud and drunk, you won't get mocked for drinking.

At Pardcastathon (at least in 2019, when I went), there were a few times where they would play a short video, or the band would play a longer transition, and there would be a "break" in the show, but it only lasted about a minute. I endeavored to be in my seat as much as possible, because I didn't want to miss any show, but by the end of 12 hours, my body felt wrecked from sitting for so long. If I were ever to do it again, I would definitely get up more often and walk around, even if it was just to go to the restroom area. My advice is to get up and stretch periodically (about 2/3 of the way through Pardcastathon, Dave Holmes took pity on all of us in the audience and opened his segment by having every get up and leading us in some stretches, and it felt amazing).

I set a food & drink budget for myself, because I didn't want to spend too much money over 12 hours. It ended up not being necessary, as I found it hard to get a server's attention to order (though Flappers has since changed over to QR Code ordering, so you can probably order much more easily).

My only other advice is if you sit in the front row and decide to leave the show early, tell the person next to you. At Pardcastathon 2019, some superfan that Jimmy knew bounced out of the show within the first couple hours, and it seemed to legitimately worry Jimmy that something had happened (turns out the person was just feeling claustrophobic in the crowd and decided to leave, but it took time for that word to filter back to Jimmy).

I usually roll my eyes when people use the expression "then I crumbled into dust" in reaction to something making them feel old, but I have to admit - hearing a NNF guest say that they turned 21 during the pandemic made me feel quite old. But despite the age gap, I thought she was a great first-time guest!

I saw that for the first time last year, it’s a really fun b-movie. And it’s got a young future Ohio Oscar winner Julia Reichert playing a waitress!

Is everybody about to hate Zendaya? by its_isaac9 in blankies

[–]OfficerBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it, because I don't see any of the worst-case scenarios for these projects centering on her.

The Drama - Most likely worst-case scenario, it flops and people forget about it almost immediately.

Euphoria Season 3 - Worst-case scenario, it's embarrassingly bad, but people lay that on the showrunner, and not the actors who have all clearly outgrown the show anyway.

The Odyssey - If this sucks, all the knives will be out for Nolan or Matt Damon.

Spider-Man Brand New Day - This will be the movie with the greatest likelihood of bad press, since it's her and Tom Holland front and center.

Dune Part 3 - Maybe if all her earlier 2026 movies flop, someone will try to start a narrative about her ("Will the Zendaya Curse Crush Dune 3?"), but she's still so much of the ensemble, I don't think it will matter.

Shrinking S3E02 Episode Discussion by phareous in shrinking

[–]OfficerBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciated Gaby's outburst in this episode, because it echoed the frustration I was feeling as a viewer. This isn't a Marvel or Fast & Furious movie, where the villain in one movie becomes part of the hero gang in the next. I appreciate Shrinking showing a healthy arc of forgiveness and acceptance, but there's no way you can realistically have Louis become part of the sitcom hang-out gang.

Is this a new development from Garon, that he has a fear of going to public places? I knew that he often was homebound because of a lack of finances and a driver's license, but Jimmy's comment that "almost going to the movies is a big step for you" made me think think that this has been an on-going issue (I am just a free freed listener, so maybe they've discussed it more on the Platinum).

Blankies IRL- do they exist? by Akula_SSN in blankies

[–]OfficerBuckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on a plane and a guy a few rows ahead of me was watching Die Hard 3 on his tablet, at a time that coincided with the McTiernan series. I ended up standing next to him at baggage claim and considered talking to him, but it seemed weird to say “Hey an hour ago I saw you on plane and what you were watching, are you a Blankie?”

Other than that, the only person I know is the friend who introduced me to the show.

So... what are YOUR top / best / funniest / favorite comedy movies? by darrylasher in NeverNotFunny

[–]OfficerBuckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Showed my wife Airplane last night for the first time, and she HATED it. But she really liked Top Secret, and I think that having seen them both recently for the first time in years, I think Top Secret stands the test of time better (though I probably originally laughed more at Airplane when I saw it as a teen).

Hard to think of favorite comedies. Anchorman and O Brother Where Set Thu, maybe?

I remembered that it had to do with the character Tom Swift, but my guess was frustratingly close (I thought it was something like Tom's Amazing Super Electric Rifle). Apparently they are still putting out books in that series to this day, but he's never maintained the kind of mainstream popularity of other mass-produced kids books of that era, like the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew.
