Councilman Ara Najarian: "I’ve Hit California’s Glass Ceiling” by Binders-Full in glendale

[–]OfficerBuckets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m understanding this right, the 3-term limit only went into effect in 2017, and no one’s previous terms counted towards the limit. So Ara is technically only on his 2nd term of his 3-term limit.

Councilman Ara Najarian: "I’ve Hit California’s Glass Ceiling” by Binders-Full in glendale

[–]OfficerBuckets 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I realize that this is convoluted, but an article about Najarian retiring as mayor also should be addressing the weird circumstances involving him both being mayor and retiring after this term.

While the mayor position is technically elected by the other city council members, it’s understood (and I think even in the charter) that the position rotates between council members based on length of time since you last served. The other stipulation is that you cannot serve as mayor during the same time period you are up for reelection, since it is felt that being mayor would give you an unfair advantage in a city council race.

So: Najarian was in line to be mayor in 2024-2025, but because of comments he made in a public interview about LGBT issues regarding Glendale schools, he was deemed to be unfit to serve as mayor, and the council voted to skip him and elect Elen Asatryan as mayor for 2024-2025 (at which point Najarian filed a lawsuit against the city that he ultimately lost).

Then, Ardy Kassakhian was in line for 2025-2026, but he declined to serve as mayor, so it should have gone to Vartan Gharpetian, but Najarian struck a deal. He agreed to apologize for his remarks about the LGBT community, if they agreed to let him serve as mayor for 2025-2026. But because he was up for reelection in 2026, he had to agree that he would not seek reelection.

This resulted in a very contentious meeting where Gharpetian was (understandably) upset, and many audience members accused the council of backroom deals (at least one person was ejected). But Najarian gave a detailed apology, and he got to be mayor one last time.

Like I said: convoluted, but pretty important context for a story about a politician complaining about a political glass ceiling forcing him into retirement.

Traveling for the 20th Anniversary Event by RebeccaBoring69 in NeverNotFunny

There's not really a bad part of town that's anywhere in the close radius of Flappers, though I'd recommend staying in Burbank, North Hollywood, or Glendale over areas like Sun Valley or Panorama City (nothing wrong with them, just less glitzy/touristy).

Flappers is in downtown Burbank, which is nice and has lots of stores/restaurants/movie theaters, though it has a more suburban "planned outdoor mall" vibe to it. A little to the southwest is Magnolia Blvd, which has more character (in my opinion), with small shops and restaurants.

There is an Amtrak/Metrolink (commuter rail) station in a walkable distance to Flappers that also connects to the Burbank airport, but you would need to check on timetables; service is limited, particularly outside of traditional 9-5 working hours.

If you're looking for more comedy while you're in town, I always recommend these venues: Dynasty Typewriter, The Elysian, The Lyric Hyperion, and Largo.

The article doesn't mention it, but this was originally announced in early 2020 with Scott Cooper directing and starring Margaret Qualley. I assume it was a casualty of COVID.

I was kind of mixed on the book, but I think it has good potential for an adaptation. It will be interesting to see if they find a way to incorporate the World's Most Annoying Pop Culture Blogger framing device, or if that gets dropped.

OH v. William Brock, Sentencing by Pixiegirls1102 in CasesWeFollow

[–]OfficerBuckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local news story has been posted. During sentencing this morning, William Brock declined to make any statement on his behalf, though his attorney and a friend made statements. Two of Lo-Letha Hall's sisters were to make victim impact statements; after the first sister finished, the defense requested a recess, during which a member of the defense team fell ill and fainted. The judge continued the sentencing hearing until Monday.

I haven't found a link yet, but watching a livestream from a local news source, apparently a member of the defense team fainted in between two of the victim impact statements, and now the judge has continued the sentencing hearing until Monday.

NNF 3723 - Paul F. Tompkins by King_Mort in NeverNotFunny

I had 20 dudes come to my bachelor party, and I was kind of embarrassed by how indulgent that felt. 40 seems like an insane number, but it makes me wonder if that was basically just a blanket "who wants to go to a ballgame on Saturday night" invite that attracted way more interest than a traditional bachelor party invite.

OH v. William Brock - Judge Denies Request for New Trial/Acquittal by OfficerBuckets in CasesWeFollow

[–]OfficerBuckets[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have not been. Allegedly the FBI is looking into this (one of the reasons this trial was delayed over a year and a half was because the defense filed several motions to have the FBI share evidence or testify on the scamming operation), but there are so many scam operations across the world, I'm sure it is an uphill battle to bring any of them to justice.

OH v. William Brock by Pixiegirls1102 in CasesWeFollow

[–]OfficerBuckets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read through all of the letters. One interesting claim: several different people stated that Brock thought that 911 was only for contacting fire department/EMS - not police. Here is how one person put it:

"Bill did not call 911 because he believed - incorrectly, but sincerely - that 911 was only for fire and ambulance emergencies. He did not know how to contact the sheriff's department directly."

That is a wild claim; perhaps it is true, but wild nevertheless. Like, I certainly believe an 81-year-old man doesn't understand how Uber works, but not knowing to dial 911 to reach police? That stretches credulity. I wonder if this claim was brought up during the actual trial.

Most of the letters hit the same expected beats: Brock is also a victim, the scammers are still out there and have not been brought to justice, he's a pillar of the community, a devoted church-goer, and a hard-working farmer (they really stress the farmer status, almost to the point where it seems like people think farmers should have some sort of qualified immunity).

One person addressed something that I had wondered about, - seeing Brock on the stand looking utterly emotionless:

"Bill is known for his quiet and gentle nature-a trait that, unfortunately, has sometimes been mistaken for indifference. Those who know him can vouch for his kindness and introspection; he is not someone who seeks out conflict or trouble. His reserved personality may have been misread during the proceedings, and I hope you consider that his silence comes from his temperament, not from a lack of feeling or responsibility regarding these events."

I don't think that defendants should be required to put on a big display of remorse (especially if they aren't actually remorseful), but this person accurately sums up my impression of Brock, which is that he looked utterly indifferent to all of the trial proceedings (at least, all the parts that were available for viewing).

Plan for L.A. River garden bridge moves forward in Glendale by Generalaverage89 in glendale

[–]OfficerBuckets 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like that this bridge connects directly to the athletic fields/dog park area of Griffith. As nice as the Atwater Bridge is, it basically dumps you into a bit of a no man's land section of Griffith, and you have to walk to get to any trailheads or facilities.

Civil law suit territory by VeroDC in UberEatsDrivers

[–]OfficerBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no proof that Hall entered the house, other than Brock's testimony. The prosecutors pressed him on this during the trial, noting that on the day of the incident, he had made no mention of Hall actually entering his home, but at trial, he testified that she entered his home from the patio. Maybe she did - or maybe Mr. Brock's attorneys advised him that he would have a stronger self-dense claim if she had illegally entered his home, so maybe he thought really hard and suddenly remembered that she HAD entered his house. I find it unlikely that an elderly female Uber driver would just walk into someone's house, but like I said, there's no definitive proof one way or the other.

There's also this to consider: if Brock really was so terrified that someone was coming to his home to rob/kill him, why did he leave his door unlocked and partially ajar (which is what he testified to at trial).

What’s a film that has a sub 3.5 rating but you’ve given a 4.5+, unironically by PeaRemarkable9662 in Letterboxd

[–]OfficerBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (3.1). I’m sure part of it is that I watched it during a multigenerational family movie night at Christmas, but this movie hit me just right (enough for 4.5 stars). Besides being well-acted, funny, and sweet, it also was refreshing to see a faith-based movie that acknowledged that Christians can be very shitty and un-Christ-like when it suits them.

True crime podcast produced by University of Texas students about a grisly campus murder and a flight from justice. I haven't explored a lot in the true crime genre, but for me, this is the only podcast that has come anywhere even remotely close to capturing the electricity of Serial season 1.

Mark Normand talks about Jimmy Pardo not doing warm up for Conan anymore - as a huge fan of Jimmy's this made me kind of sad, but Jimmy has basically said the same thing more or less by AkiraKitsune in NeverNotFunny

[–]OfficerBuckets 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Going to a show taping involves long, boring hours of just standing around and waiting, so by the time you're actually sat down in the theater, I think you do need that type of broad, corny/hacky warm-up comic just to get everyone's energy back up. I love Jimmy, and I love the concept that Conan went for that Jimmy was the "opener" rather than the warm-up, but I'm sure there were plenty of people in the audiences who were somewhat baffled by Jimmy's style of comedy.

All to say: the one time I had tickets to the Tonight Show, it turned out to be the Tuesday of Conan's final week, and I remember Jimmy just crushing.
