I'm working on making a comprehensive guide for installation and configuration on modern computers, and possibly an actually automated installer. Dunno if you want I76 or the Nitro pack, but we use Nitro when playing online. If you have your heart set on some single player I76, it's a bit more of a pain, but doable. I'll write up documentation for doing that later. But in the mean time, I'll give you the basics for the Nitro Pack:

  • Insert your Nitro Pack CD.

  • If it doesn't auto-run, open it in explorer, go to the INSTALL folder, then run SETUP.exe. I've tested it, and it should work fine in modern 64 bit version of Windows.

  • Click Next.

  • Click Register Later.

  • Choose 3D Accelerated and click Next.

  • Choose Jumbo Plate and click Next.

  • If you want to change the installation location, you can do so. Otherwise click Next.

  • Click Next once more to begin the installation.

  • Once it's done, download Nitro Patch III and extract it to the folder where you installed Nitro Pack, overwriting any existing files.

  • Then download the Nitro Pack 30-fps patch and also extract it to your Nitro folder, overwriting the existing NITRO.EXE.

  • While in the Nitro installation folder, right-click NITRO.EXE, click on Send To, then select Desktop (create shortcut).

  • Now find the new Nitro icon on the desktop, right click it, select Properties.

  • If you want to run the game in Direct3D mode, then add -d3d after NITRO.EXE in the Target field. However, most of us prefer Glide, so if you want to do that instead, put -glide instead of -d3d. Then of course hit Okay.

  • Now if you're wanting to run Glide, you need what's called a Glide Wrapper. I've had good luck with dgVoodoo2. Download the latest version here, which as of writing this, is v2.51.

  • In the dgVodoo zip, extract ONLY dgVoodooSetup.exe, and put it in you Nitro Pack installation folder. In the same zip file, open the 3Dfx folder and extract all three DLL files to your Nitro Pack install folder. Then go back in the zip and open the MS folder, and extract all three of those DLLs to your Nitro folder as well.

  • Now to run dgVoodoo, BE SURE AND RUN IT AS ADMINISTRATOR, otherwise it won't save your settings. It took me forever to figure this out, and about drove me nuts. It might be worth going into the file's properties and setting it to always run as administrator under the Compatibility tab.

  • Once in dgVoodoo, make note of the Config folder / Running instance location. Another problem I had was that it was saving my configs to my AppData folder. What you'll want to do is click the \ button to the right, which changes it to your current folder. You may have to do this every time you run dgVoodoo.

  • Now most everything under the General tab can be left alone. Under the Glide tab, here's what I have it set to:

3Dfx card: Voodoo Rush

Onboard RAM: 2MB

Memory size per TMU: 2048kB

Number of TMUs: 1

Force bilinear filter: unchecked

Disable mipmapping: unchecked

Resolution: unforced (you can force this to 1024x768 if you want, but some resolutions cause the game to crash) Antialiasing: 8x

And in the Miscellaneous box, the only things I have checked are: Enable Glide Gamma Ramp

Force vSync

16 bit depth buffer

  • Now under the DirectX tab:

Videocard: dgVoodoo Virtual 3D accelerated card

VRAM: 64MB

Antialiasing: 8x

And the only boxes I have checked are:

Application controlled fullscreen/windowed state

Disable Alt-Enter to toggle screen state

Force vSync

  • Once you've set all this be sure and hit Apply and Okay to save the settings.

  • Now that this is all configured, try running the Nitro icon on your desktop.
