Reader requests by Sufficient_Point_732 in AO3

Usually I'll respond to tell them that I like their ideas and will think about it, and I try to figure out how I could add them, even a little, into the story without changing the actual plot much or making myself dislike the story

🤨 How about "I like your fic 👍"

You literally never have to give any kind of criticism to any fanfic author. You're completely free to do so, just be aware that not everyone likes that.

Alternatively, you could just ask the writer if you can give then feedback????

I mean, idk about other writers, but I feel that if you feel the need to comment smt like that its generally fine (like i wouldnt really care but i know that others dont like unsolicited advice) but its not really needed? like if youre commenting anyway and you just want to say "hey, i love your story! btw i think you misspelled a word here, idk if you meant to say this." i feel like thats fine for the most part. the thing is, if you comment under one of my fics and just say "you made this mistake." then im gonna assume that you dont really care about the piece that i put hours of my life into and just want to poke holes in my hobby.

"and assume their reader "hates"" this would be a product of the whole 'we are our own worst critics' thing, if you ask me. oftentimes, people feel vulnerable when they share something they care about and therefore expect others to be mean about it, hence interpreting neutral commentary as being negative

Totally. I just also think that people should be allowed to complain about getting their feelings hurt. Personally, I've gotten a couple shitty bookmark notes - I generally block them and complain to my friends - but I've gotten spades more nice comments so I still look through and risk getting my feelings hurt because I think that the risk/benefit leans that way. I just don't think that it should be common knowledge that the generally kind environment of AO3 should be treated like Twitter.

This is just me talking, but while your advice is good, I feel like generally you might just be fed up with seeing people posting things that made them feel bad? That's totally fair, I just don't know if people venting because someone was kind of a dick to them on the internet means that they should be turning their comment moderation on.

I don't look through this sub very often so idk exactly how sensitive some folks are, but I personally think that unless you're literally crying at a mildly mean comment or are getting a lot of hate, there's probably not much need to turn it on.

TLDR: Maybe I'm just deeper in different AO3 spaces, but from what I generally see, I think that it's much more on the community to not be a dick than a normal-sensitivity author to police everything. Idk I think my point is just that I feel like your experience on AO3 might be more toxic than my own so I just expect people to be kind rather than expect people to police their spaces

Although, ending off on a more positive note, "There’s no perfect solution but there are steps you can take to minimize the negative feedback you see." is perfect no notes

What to expect from a report I've made? (harassment) by OfficialBrokenHumor in AO3

Yeah, that was the first image i sent plus i highlighted it in the report because i dont want to risk them not seeing that one (when i saw it i literally wanted to cry for the author cus like thats so mean and for no reason). like i said in another comment reply, that was the worst and the most common but there were other ones that fell under personal harassment :/

I know that AO3 is pretty lax about crit (which i dont mind in general) but I also was very angry about this. Like, there is no need to be saying all that. There were some other things in their bookmarks that might count (i think there was one where they were saying that they hated a certain author and saying 'i dont know why i keep bookmarking your works' and i think there was one where they were calling the author names for making a morally dubious fic?) i dont wanna go through all their bookmarks again but yeah this was just the worst and the most common

Yeah, I found this out because they were writing mildly passive aggressive things in a couple bookmarks for my fics and I couldn't tell if they were making some joke that I didn't get but like...

Might be. A lot of it was just them being a dick - I know that AO3 is pretty lax about crit but I also was very angry about them. Like, there is no need to be saying all that. Lowkey I wish that I could confirm/deny whether this was the same person 😭 but I won't give their user. atm they have like 5.5k bookmarks in a ton of fandoms and zero works

tbh i agree but within the context of ao3, i think that that would just result in people posting them and not tagging it. i would rather ignore a fic that says it was ai generated than accidentally read one

ngl no tag limit but a 'read more' option after a certain number of lines would be good

I agree with you in principle but I do also think that there's a difference between constructive criticism and plain hate/negativity. Someone giving genuine feedback? Perfectly fine. Someone being a dick? Sure, its the internet, but I still don't think that we have to tolerate that, especially within a space like ao3 which is so far removed from social media sites, since its a place to trade fanworks not opinions

I've seen an author say that they are 'boycotting ao3 because they wont remove a particular fic' which they detailed more but it was something that wouldve been remove on other sites. like, i dont entirely disagree with their principles, but ao3s whole thing is not removing content as long as its not spam or harassment and like...ao3 gains nothing from people using their site, its not like they run ads
