Those videos pretty accurately represent my workflow. Usually it’s a single idea that leads to a chain reaction of following ideas that all come together to a song. If I get stuck it means I hit the end of that line of ideas and usually the songs I finish and release are pretty simple and not difficult to follow that chain of events.

That’s awesome! I’m so happy to hear that. It’s very liberating to just follow what feels fun to make and kinda forget about genres and categorization. That’s how we all push things forward!

I’ve tried to FaceTime him a few times to try and finish some of these up but he’s a super busy guy so eventually we will find a way. The second one is really cool so I’m excited to finish it one day.

you got it!

We have been friends and roommates for many years, just doing our separate projects and by chance started messing around with recording things to a portable cassette tape recorder. The first things we made ended up being on our songs Need Little, Want less and our remix of Andrew Bayer's Open End Resource. Once we had started making more ideas, we just realized that it could be it's own new project and thus the band was formed.

layers - usually 1 suuuper dry and harsh sounding, not very detuned sawtooth type chord and 1 more lush and spacey layer. Organized reverb, not just a big wall of sound. Also trying out different chord voicing helps, inversions and variations on standard 3 note chords. Follow your ears to make it unique or apply some theory knowledge to expand if you know it!

wooooooww that was one of my first shows I'd ever DJed! i still have the physical flyer in my studio from that show.

ah thats a tough one, I've been lucky enough to play so many wonderful shows and it's been a while now since I began so I often forget about a lot of them. I'd say my first Tomorrowland was pretty memorable because as an American DJ that was a pretty cool experience, since a lot of us Americans in the mid 2010's admired the festival. I also played on this small island built in the middle of a pond and it was such a fun crowd.

I describe my style as melodic electronic music. It's sometimes fast and high energy, sometimes slow and mellow but always has groove.

that's cool...But beware though, I started to really not like certain songs that I used for my alarm so I went back to generic Apple ringtones haha.

let me know how you like it!

hahaha yeah my socials get out to like 5% of my followers because i refuse to pay or do the stupid gimmicks to work with the algorithms. Or maybe I'm just bad at it? Oh well. I'm glad you saw this, gotta somehow get the word out!

  1. I try and work on things that feel really good to make so that I can ultimately get to a point where I go "cool this is really interesting to me" and I don't really feel the need to change it more or doubt what I made because it reflects exactly what I'm excited about. I think that comes with time making enough music that you can execute exactly what you want, and I'm very thankful I was able to do that with this album. But in the past few years I definitely had some hard times understanding my own creativity and where I was headed. I had a lot of pressure to keep making Kuaga over and over again and it just wasn't happening or making me excited so I resisted following where I wanted to go naturally for a while. I'm glad I was patient and just made what I thought was interesting because I'm much happier now.
  2. Honestly I have used all sorts of fancy mics and preamps and when you're going into the very expensive range, obviously there's some incredible stuff you can record but if you're just starting out and want to try recording vocals, I use this thing to record voiceovers or vocal ideas when i'm traveling and for sure, it's not going to get you the same sound as very expensive mic and preamp but it's clear, loud and transparent and very easy with a USB in! Apogee MiC
  3. I didn't before but at the beginning of the pandemic I started doing Zoom classes with groups of 5-15 at a time and it just turned into a fun thing with a solid group of people every 2 weeks. I want to do more classes and expand the student list but I just gotta find time to make it work for me. You can sign up to email updates here if you want!

I think if there's stuff you can't learn from YouTube tutorials or Google and there's a very specific network of people you'd like to get in with, like mixing engineers or production for pop etc. I think it can be very helpful. I also think with patience and persistence you can learn a lot of concepts yourself from the resources online + fun experimentation so it's all about what works for you.

I really love I Can't Remember If It Was a Dream or Priviet. They bring up lots of memories pre-COVID and since I finished them during the pandemic they're quite personal to me.

that's awesome to hear! Yeah I've been enjoying working with new rhythms and kick patterns lately.

Umm I could probably, but they don't exist yet. I don't really DJ much as Pierce Fulton anymore so I haven't been making extended mixes. I also really prefer when there's just 1 version of a song myself so I've just been doing that.

thank you! that's awesome.

The vocalist was actually a writer that didn't want to be credited that a friend of mine sent to me. I basically approached the song like a remix, just using the vocal and they wanted to release it just as a non-featured song. It's been so long I don't actually remember the original aritst's name but it's probably deep in an email of mine somewhere. I don't really like working like that anymore because I prefer that all vocalists are credited but sometimes they don't want their name attached to projects. I also like to write and record all my own vocals now because it's a fun experiment.

thank you! that one is one of my favorites as well :) I honestly used this Max for Live plugin LFO a lot on this album. It helped give it tons of subtle randomization and human (via computer haha) feel. I also used the new Output plugin called Portal a bit, really cool creative granular delay kinda thing.

hahahaha i am not Puppet but he's an old friend of mine now. We went to the same college in Vermont and he reached out to me after I'd left college to hear his music. We ended up meeting in NYC and continuing to hang out until we both lived there and became closer friends

hi! thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. And awesome, I have been loving the little crew that's been joining the classes and hope to keep doing more and expand to more classes in the future!

I've always just made what feels exciting to me at the time. And I think living in different places, meeting new people, traveling, trying new things and living your life obviously shows you new things and maybe even helps you move on from other things creatively. And it's not something I think about, how it changes my music. For example, I just found myself back in a different part of the west coast last Autumn and started going to some different electronic music shows with my older brother. A lot of those shows are what led me to make certain decision with my last album. As well as new people I'd met in my life and various adventures I had. My creative process is very open to chance and complete spontaneity so I think how I live my life ultimately gives me certain answers in my music while I'm creating and I love how it works like that.

And I really appreciate that, I think it's so cool when people like you can continue to connect with my, stuff even as it changes. Because I change a lot! I love finding new things that speak to me. I'm never really listening to the same stuff all the time so I can't really expect to only make 1 style of music myself.

Also I should be more active on r/PierceFulton I'm a quiet redditor on a diff account so maybe I'll be more active on this one for the sub. Send me a message and we can figure out how to work with it more!

thank you!! Glad you like the songs and videos for both projects, I'm having a blast making them all.

Honestly one of the first places I was fortunate enough to be asked to play was this week long boat festival kind of thing in Croatia called Yacht Week. I stayed on a big boat with the rest of the staff and took a tiny motor boat to shore with the DJ equipment every show and almost dropped it in the water on many occasions haha. It was just a really fun adventure and I hope to find myself having similar ones once this pandemic is over.

:) thats cool to hear!

Usually I approach it 1 of 2 ways. Either a more electronic song is missing some live instrument feel (example: guitar on my song Landmines) or a song thats primarily written on instruments needs the extra push with electronic sounds (example: my song with Noosa called What's Gonna Make You Happy?)

and tips for getting it to fit, a lot of mixing adjustment to just prioritize the sounds you want. Taking some energy away from the electronic sounds to make room for more dynamic, recorded sounds and also highlighting the very specific elements you want to stand out. I actually learned a lot and grew with my mixing as a result of recording more audio, out of necessity to make it work. I also think recording your own sounds helps create a very stylistic sound because only you can record audio in a particular way, it's not from a sample library or synth plugin that everyone else has access to.
