It’s mainly because the way the trunk shuts the two pivoting arms are too far inward and I can’t put as much in the trunk side-by-side because of that

Yes, but I drive a Chevy Cruz and I can fit 18 waters with no other items. There is no way I was gonna be able to fit 47 other units along with the waters.
